Weeds As Squatters
Quick update,
Another perspective on weeds and,
The purpose of an organization (or garden) is what it does, not what it says it does, and you know what is important, because it gets measured and tracked.

Last week of August 2024, greens and squash
มุมมอง 73วันที่ผ่านมา
last week of August 2024, approx. 60 days to average first frost. Adding a couple rows of greens a week, experimenting with fall pepo squash. New raised bed progressing, and invitation to the 2025 Riceland Garden planning meeting, Monday, Sept 16 at 2pm. Location is the Craighead County Extension Office.
A request for leaves, during the fall
มุมมอง 2414 วันที่ผ่านมา
Fall is fast approaching, I'm seeing the beginnings if leaves falling. With that here is an appeal for those leaves being removed by individuals or landscaping companies, to dump shredded leaves in the two unused garden plots at the community garden. We will further shred them as a decomposing, organic, in situ mulch/compost, into which we can plant squash starts in the spring of 2025. Please, ...

Thoughts on weeds (1) and a bit more planted
มุมมอง 21หลายเดือนก่อน
First, trying to give some props to those doing the majority of the work, and rarely getting recognized. I'll likely miss some names.. Chip, Chris, Dale, Danny, Judy, Dr S and likely others for weekly adding cardboard and mulch. A brief thought on what all weeds are telling us and indicating, And lastly, two partial rows of collards were planted, radishes and spinach.
First Collards planted & using a broadfork
มุมมอง 19หลายเดือนก่อน
Spent about 4 hours in the garden today, arrived to find the heavy work had already been done, a whole bunch of more cardboard and mulch spread out. Mucho Gracious.. once again. I found a packet of Georgia Collards from 2022, and decided to take a risk and go ahead and plant them. Picked the row where sunflowers had been, broke out the Meadow Creature broadfork, loosened the row a bit, mini-til...
Short update, August 7 2024
มุมมอง 395หลายเดือนก่อน
Haven't been able to make an update in a couple weeks. I'm hoping some scheduling changes will allow getting out to the garden a bit more frequent and regular. Anyway, along with the typical weed and mulch, the main thing is a possible planning meeting in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned.

Weeding was in progress when I arrived. We removed the plastic from one bed, amended and planted sweet corn. Also planted a bit of swiss chard and cilantro Turned and watered the compost pile, added a bit of chicken litter to the pile as well.

Very short video. First off, Thanks to Chip and Chris and whomever came out Thursday and/or Friday, there was a massive amount of wood chip mulching, likely with cardboard done. Amazing! Turned the compost pile, chatted with a couple that dropped by (and picked some zinnias, cucumbers, okra). Did some weeding, a very light application of Murate of Potassium on the rows that don't have plastic o...
Riceland Soil Tests June 2024

Having repeated the soil test via Ward Labs, Here's a bit of the results, what they may mean, and a suggestion to go back and rewatch (or watch for the first time), the Discussion we had with a representative from Ward Labs, some months ago, after the Feb. soil tests. Terry gave us some history of the lab, what tests they do, why and how they do them, and using our results, how to interpret the...

Planted some pinto beans and black eyed peas, got another load of wood chips, covered part of a row with plastic. I'd say about 10 people dropped by between 10am and 4pm on Friday, just checking out the garden, asking questions, and picking what was ready to pick. Oh, and we did some weeding, yeah, weeding... yeah!

Combination drone and gopro. Looking at what is doing well, what I take the blame for messing up, how dense and full of life the cover cropped plot is and more.
Riceland June 14 update

First off, A small harvest. The bush beans (regular and "Dragon's Tongue") are ready and needing picked. If not picked they will cease producing much earlier. Otherwise, more weeding and more mulching.

I hear having weeds is better then having bare land those roots still help the soil.

      @GardenJonesboro 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

Worst situation, bare tilled soil Step up: Bare untilled soil Step up: Covered untilled soil (mulched) Step up: Untilled soil with living roots, none is bare Step up: high diversity of living roots at all soil levels, with high diversity of soil life representing all tropic levels actively cycling nutrients, moisture, minerals, organic material. There are many variations from Permaculture, to Will Bonsall's version of "Veganic" gardening, the work of Helen Athowe and many many others others. Plenty of research available for those willing to set preconceived notions aside and actually open their eyes. Heck, just abandon some land for 3-4 years, come back and see how nature dealt with it, and try to find bare ground and sick plants, not to mention how thick and diverse the plants are.

Have you tried using rice hulls as mulch? I sure recognize where you are! I live about 40 miles south Jonesboro.

We did that this year (look at the early videos). We got like 3 large "bales" of "PBRH" from Riceland (Parboiled Rice Hulls). they are a waste product which has been sold for some years mainly as an alternative to Vermiculite and/or Perlite for use in potting mixes. I wasn't really impressed vs well chipped wood or leaves, and have additional concerns about how much chemical is sprayed on them when growing (though what they gave us was OMRI certified) and even more so, the single use bags the bales come in. More trash for the landfill. Go to about 3:41 in this video. th-cam.com/video/81A6VnO3JV4/w-d-xo.html

David, finally got a chance to listen. A group of us just did some testing elsewhere and now I have results from three labs to compare. With the info Terry has given me more to think about when it comes to testing. Hope to see you soon.

Just so you know with elephant garlic you should remove those scapes as soon as you see them so you don't end up the big seed flower. Your elephant garlic heads will be much larger if you remove them right away. The seeds that are produced in the flower seem to vary quite a bit whether they grow or not. The corms I planted last year ended up as about the size of a golf ball. I ate one of them and it was good, but I am also replanting some these in late fall to see how they do.

I certainly need to keep practicing with this drone to get smoother shots and got a wee bit close to the power lines at one point. it's not big enough to touch two and arc, but still might have crashed. That shadow of a bird that kept going by, thought it might attack the drone.
