That's great buddy all the best for it!! Check out the website (mission focused) for my book talking you through the whole process. Best of luck!!!

If you visit Mission Focused website you'll be able to get it there 🙂
Realashionship first, then training becomes natural.very little training needed.
Thanks I’m going to try the wait before I give my pup the treat. I’m working on recall my pup is a 4 month old AmStaff
Can you use a calculator during the exam?
how beautiful dog,i like so much dog
Tell me what you make of this technique I use with my dog who pulls on the lead - Using a lead that goes around my waist so that I am hands-free, I have been getting my dog to walk with me on my left side. I then hold out my left hand (in a fist, not as threatening as it sounds, promise!) roughly where I want his head to be (so that his body is in a heel position). Every time he looks up at my fist I give him a treat from my treat pouch from my right hand. He is doing SO WELL. He looks up at my fist regularly without a verbal prompt (of course to get a treat). Now he's bypassing my wrist and giving me eye contact. I'm also reducing the treats a little and he is staying so focused. I can also relax my hand and he looks up at me :) My point is this - my dog cannot seem to walk to heel without a VISUAL reminder of where I want him to be (we've been working on 'heel' for a while). I also do turns with my left wrist out. It's like a ruler/guide/gauge. He loses focus so quickly and this is giving him the structure he needs. Wondered what you think!? I suppose it's a bit like the noise that you make to get a dog's attention but it's visual. My dog does respond to noise but he's much more visual and sometimes I think noise gets him a bit heightened. My fist is silent (obvs!) and adds to the serenity of our walk!
Thanks! Totally agree about corrective measures. I don't tug, mainly because I don't think the dog understands what a tug means. They get a fright and sadly become used to it, without computing it means 'walk slower'. Out of interest, did you use treats with this dog when you first started training her? I absolutely had to with my young (rehomed) spaniel as I wasn't on his radar at all. He was off! I'm slowly reducing them now.
Nice video. Thanks :) Weirdly, I have been doing some light, intermittent running with my young, energetic spaniel who pulls on the lead and changing up my speed (slow, moderate, fast, vey fast) in order to teach heel. I do "reps" of this. He is doing really well to match my pace and stay in line with me. I am managing to hold his attention because he is always anticipating a speed change. Running before I can walk 😂 I've found it really hard to teach "heel" without making it fun/dynamic. Frankly, my dog is bored with teaching heel in a conventional sense (no matter how delicious the treats!). He needs stimulation/variety to learn and the rush of going fast meets his need to go fast without him pulling on the lead. What do you think of this as a training technique?
Morning, I think that's a great technique!!! Training the heal is such a hard thing to do, some dogs really just want to be out in front. How is your dog's toy drive? We are going to try and get Poppy's toy drive up because she will love chasing a toy but often drops it and prefers to sniff the ground haha! If you are in Instagram tag us in a pic of your dog so I can see you both training :) I'm really getting back into TH-cam as a creative / fun outlet so really appreciate your comment btw!

This was extremely helpful! I watched the video whilst also working through the mock questions in the How2Become Police Scotland books which I purchased on Amazon, and passed my entrance test yesterday. Mathematics was an area I hadn’t studied in roughly 10 years, so this video and the books mentioned above really helped me be more than prepared for the day.
Hi I usually walk my dog on my right side. Does that mean I should do this drill clockwise to keep him on the inside of the circle? Thanks
Hi my son is going for his assessment in a fortnight do you have a link to any mock tests ? Also found this video very informative 👍🏼
morning, thanks for the compliment! Yeah if you email: missionfocused@outlook.com I can send you some
@@thecairdcompany2811 I’ve sent you an email. Thanks
Seems to work well with your pup. And it's easy to do, even in the garden.
yeah she has really enjoyed it, and I think it worked well over the years to build her focus on us. Do you do any attention work / training?
Nice calm training. Well done!
Thank you so much for the lovely comment!
Yes you’re right about your product looking good …. However remember the most important aspect of selling ….. a saying embodied in all selling circles… no matter the product “ people buy from people “ and you have a style of presenting which is a joy to listen too….. OK I might be biased being a fellow Scot, nonetheless well done to both of you for stepping out into that scary world of entrepreneurship.
Dude, thank you so much for the truly awesome comment! Having spent my entire career in the military & Police it is really challenging to step into entrepreneurship! I sometime think my accent has gone... then I listen to myself and realise it is definitely still there haha !
Enjoyed watching you train pup. Thanks...
awesome, thanks for the great comment! It was really sunny that day, could do with some sun this week haha
Thank you for such a great video. I really enjoyed it. I have a dog that gets bored quickly and most trainers say I should get exciting to him. But that puts him over the top and he can't concentrate. This is a wonderful method for us. I will try it before our obedience class today.❤❤
There are trainers and trainers! Need calm otherwise they don’t listen!
That's such a lovely comment, thank you! What type of dog do you have? We have just moved to a new house with a nice back garden so we are looking forward to doing more videos. Our dog has really settled down and matured now she is 2. What age is your dog?
@@thecairdcompany2811 He is a Lagotto Romagnolo and will be turning 3 yrs on July 13 2024. I am looking forward to seeing more of you and your beautiful pup. ❤
Totally agree that poor focus on the lead is due to lack of attention paid towards the handler. Nice video. Any tips for if a dog will only work for food? i.e. "I'm not doing that unless I can see you have a treat for me"
Hi, thanks for the awesome comment. I would try a mix in your training, maybe load up on treats at the start and then swap it to attention or no treat and see the dogs reaction. But some dogs are really food focused and work best for tasty treats. What type of dog do you have?
@@thecairdcompany2811 English Springer Spaniel. He loves attention during downtime but isn't motivated by it during training, unfortunately. He is always on the lookout for a treat and I just can't get him working without either a treat or a ball (a ball isn't realistic to use if I simply want a 'down'). I'm stuck :(
harness? not on your life. Collar? not happening with mine. A halti combined with a slipchain.

Do you use regular food or treats?
we used kibble which was part of her meals when she was younger. It defiantly worked to keep her attention on us, and actually really mentally stimulated the dog. What type of dog do you have?

Hello, I have analyzed your TH-cam channel and found some problems. Do you want to talk about it for a while? I want to show some problems and issues in your Channel.
Great Video, at 02:43 you mentioned the name of your Dog trainer but it is hard for me to understand the name ;-) you wanted to put a link in the discription but probably didn't find the time yet. Could you please send me the link. Many thanks, Ian from Germany
Hi Ian, thanks for the awesome comment. The "dog trainer" was our eldest son. He did the vast majority of the training for Poppy... who knew getting a kid a dog would teach the kid so many lessons haha. Our son did really well with getting an obedient and calm dog. Do you have a dog over in Germany?
@@thecairdcompany2811 yes, we used to have a dachshund he was 17 when we had to put him down, after about 12 months we realized that we can’t live without a dog, so now we have a 5 month old Labradoodle. He is just a fantastic dog.
so good video ! but it seems you dog knows already very well what you expect from her. I will start as soon as possible but now in Florida we have high heat and a lot of rain. but cannot wait to work with my puppy and teach her this lesson. It will be not so easy as I see you with your dog. Thank you , very good video.
thank you so much for the lovely comment! I can only imagine how hot it is across there in Florida!!! I know what you mean, it is hard because Poppy has picked up the training so fast haha! Awesome to think someone in America is watch my training over here!
This is great

Great video with lots of ideas. Thank you. I have a Patterdale dog that I've been working on for 18 months, and he's getting there, but there's a bit to do yet. Dog training teaches us a lot, too, like patience awareness and self-control.
Thanks for the kind words, and I totally agree with the benefits we as humans get from the training process of dogs! Is your dog 18 months or did you get it at an older age? We are at dog fest Bristol if you are going this year, come and see us
I recently adopted a Black Lab and she walks at my side while on the leash, but once she sees another dog or a human she can think of nothing but getting to them. How do I calm her down?
We were in the exact same position with Poppy. She would be soooo calm in the house and on walks... but then see a dog and get hyper focused. We just made sure we continued to exposure her to these situations and not walk the other way or cross the road otherwise they can sense your concern. Maybe try favourite treat or toy to distract and keep attention but still expose the dog to the situation of being near the other dog. Let me know if that makes any sense? Cheers, Rees
walked once or twice? Buddy, atleast 3 times... 1 shorter walk in the morning, a medium/long walk in the middle of the day and a shorter one in the evening.
awesome buddy! what type of dog do you have? Our lab only needs one walk a day with some training stuff done at home by the kids
Mental enrichment is key
You should do this with a dog that has never walked a heel before.
haha I know! I wish I had access to one. My eldest did such a good job teaching Poppy that it is actually quite hard to demonstrate with her. What type of do do you have?
Just FYI your thumbnail had a mistake in it: the apostrophe in "dog's" was not necessary. It should have been just "dogs". An apostrophe means either something is possessed by dogs or is a contraction. For example, you could have had "Best dog's games" in your thumbnail. The games would have belonged to dogs, but you put "Best Games for Dogs" and "Dogs" is simply plural.
Guilty as charged :) I'm normally the one that spots this on other people's thumbnails aswell haha!
Poor grammar erodes your credibility as a so-called authority... Not fixing it makes it even worse.
No one really cares.
I want to watch dog training not grammar lessons!
@@bethhayes8427Yes they do
Who did you say helped you train poppy? Great video 😁
It was our (me and my wifes) eldest son. He has done the majority of the training and keeps me in check with training tips haha! Do you have a dog?
This is really helpful! I have a 9 month old lab who can pull really strong sometimes. Do you have any tips for what to do when you do see another dog to keep them walking nicely?
Thank you so much for the kind comment!! When Poppy was younger, she would disengage with us as we approached other dogs, they were just too exciting! I would say it's important to consider how close your dog can be to other dogs before they disengage with you. Engagement games at home work well for building your bond, and we will demonstrate some fun games in future videos. If treats work for you, make a noise to get your dogs attention, then reward (with a treat), every time your dog looks at you. If they break their attention away from you, and focus on the approaching dog, repeat the noise, and reward again when they are looking, and are focused on you. Most important thing is staying calm with a loose lead... so much easier said than done haha! Follow us on Instagram and tag The CAIRD compant to share pics of your dog and any training tips you have for the community which would be really great!
What training tips do you use to get your dog to walk to heel?
Fed on foxes is she? 😅
just foxes haha
Although this video is 2 years old, not much has changed with the test. This would help a lot of people who are thinking about joining the police.

I just found your channel and am impressed by the simplicity of the "game" to build engagement with your dog. I have a rescue Staffy that is food motivated to this will be perfect for him. I will be keeping an eye on your channel to see more of your techniques for dog training.
Evening, thank you so much for the lovely comment!! How is your Staffy getting on?
@@thecairdcompany2811 Merle is doing great! He's around 7 years old but has the energy of a 6 month old so a game of Frisbee is in order to take the edge off him before playing these games. He had virtually no recall when I got him but now he at least responds to his name when called. He doesn't always come when called but he's getting better. Thanks so much for you taking the time to share your training techniques with we youtubers!
I’ve been doing this with my 2.5 yo rescue WCS, as well as feeding her by hand, outside. She’s great on the long line and in a secure field, she’ll play fetch and retrieve. If she gets the opportunity to break free on open ground, it’s game over for recall. I’m at a loss to know what to try next.
Evening Helen, we were in the exact same position with Poppy. If she spotted another dog, she would bolt for the heavens and play with it all night if she could. Luckily her reaching 2 has matured her and she knows to stay close now. How old is your dog?

Hi can I ask is it your dogs kibble? My dog hates his kibble and wouldn’t take it- still looking for a tasty kibble suggestion
Evening, sorry for the slow reply! Yeah we sometimes use kibble and sometimes just normal training treats. If we are doing it in a very busy place I will use a few pieces of chicken or ham just to get her focused on me haha
'Literacy'....?
The old Skool may call it "English" haha just reading & writing basically. You applying?
This is just what we need for our distracted and independant (!) Mini Schnauzer. May I recommend dried sprats, broken up, they're the best treats because they're natural, and really stinky, which dogs love! Plus they don't contain all the sugar and wheat that dried food or treats are made of. Can't use my dog's food for this, though. He's on raw, and thrives on it! 🙂
That's awesome tips, thanks! My eldest has used them before and also said he liked training with them! Will get some for future videos!
