I am a rare witness to THREE vertical takeoffs with "After Burners" first one Was F 4 Phantom in 1967 from Vandenberg Air Force Base. My Uncle ( flew WWII, KOREA and Vietnam) In B 26 Bombers, F 86 fighters and Phantom F 4 Recon missions. The next two times was at Elmendorf Air Force base in the Summer of 1978. I had befriended two F 18 Frontline Cold War fighter pilots at Elmendorf while enjoying the last Of my military dependant ID priveleges. I played tennis in those days as did 70 million Americans. Those two ultra arheletic pilots could not beat me in singles or doubles. I impressed them enough that they allowed me to sit in my 68 VW square back on the flight line without another sole insight, While they did touch and goes that featured veritical end of runway After Burner rocket burns straight up ( only) and straight back down either end of the runway. It was an hour of a private air show. My Father told me in 1967 that very few mortal civilians ever get to see After Burners used in any real demonstration of what is essentially a classified combat aireal manouver. Its extremely dangerous and hard on the Pilots. My Uncle used After Burners frequently over North Vietnam for all the obvious reasons. You will NEVER see on You Tube ANY real demonstration of After Burners on ANY real combat Air craft. They area classified manouver. Jet engines were never meant to be used in Full Power ROCKET burns Even if just for a few seconds. Itsa massive dump of fuel that explodes In a really loud and frightening explosion. The acceleration is really is a BLUR of INSANE SPEED UN A SECOND of time. Air Force One has ultra classified abilities to use After Burners to go several orders above normal Mach speeds nearly instantly to escape and evade Hypersonic Missles.

If you watched a stealth aircraft taking off vertically, that would be the Marine version of the F35!
