Old to New Restorations
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 21 ก.พ. 2019
I love to take beaten, worn out, rusty antique and vintage tools and equipment and make them like new again. Where possible, I try to be sympathetic and use tools and techniques that fit the era of what I'm restoring. Rather than creating perfect museum pieces, I try and make things functional again so they can once again be used as they were meant to be.
Generally, I'm interested in restoring things that are really on the brink of being junk - things that are seized up, broken, unusable and too ugly to be decorative - I actually like old things to have some patina and a visible history, so I look for things that are beyond that!

Vintage Brass Blowtorch Restored and Tested - A Slightly Imperfect Restoration!
I picked up this unwanted and unloved vintage brass blowtorch (Monitor no 26) at an auction some time back and decided it needed some love!
It seemed complete and intact and mainly in need of some good cleaning and replacing of any seals. The pressure pump wasn't working, no doubt because the leather cup washer had dried out (almost inevitable at this age) but I was confident that this little blowlamp could be brought back to life easily enough.
I took the torch apart first of all, then cleaned all the brass parts - firstly with white spirits and then with ketchup! Ketchup is actually a great brass cleaner and really cuts through the worst of the dirt and patina. With the worst of the dirt off, I polished everything using my polishing wheels and finally - good old Brasso.
Then I fixed up the dented chimney and replaced all the washers and seals before reassembling the whole thing. And of course, I had to fire it up and give it a test!

Old Cracked Wood Plane Brought Back To Life - Sympathetic Restoration
มุมมอง 4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
I'm expanding my vintage hand tool collection - and the latest restoration is this old Marples wooden jack plane. Unlike my past restorations, I'm not going to do a 'perfect' restoration on this plane - I want to keep the patina and let it wear its age with pride! Instead, I'll be cleaning it up and getting the worst of the grime off the body, removing the rust from the metal parts and resharpe...
Rusty Knife Restoration - Vintage 'Fame' Butcher Knife Brought Back to Life
มุมมอง 7392 ปีที่แล้ว
I got this random knife as part of an auction lot last year. Looking at it more closely, I found a makers stamp on it; 'Fame' by S & J Kitchen. It's hard to tell the age exactly - the company traded for around a hundred years - but I'd guess it was made somewhere in the middle of last century. While in reasonable shape, it definitely needed some work; the blade was rusty and the edge chipped, a...
Restoration of Battered Antique Railway Oil Lamp
มุมมอง 3.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This oil (paraffin) lamp was once used as a locomotive cabin lantern - according to the stamp, belonging to North Eastern Railway. That railway existed until 1922, making this lamp around a hundred years old, or possibly even older. It looks like it's had a hard life in the intervening years! The tank had come apart at some point and the resulting leak had gummed everything together. So my firs...
Antique Brass Postage Scales Restoration & Repair
มุมมอง 25K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A lovely old set of antique (Edwardian, as far as I can make out) brass and wood postage scales, sadly neglected. It was time to give them the care they need! After stripping everything down, I stripped off the old finish from the base before sanding, staining and applying shellac to recreate the original coating. I had to learn how to do french polishing as I went, but I'm fairly happy with th...
Whitmore Carpenter's Vice Restoration - Rusty, Seized & Neglected!
มุมมอง 29K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I'd been looking for a small vice for some of my projects for a while now, when I came across this at an auction. I think I paid £2 for it! It was severely neglected and seized up from rust. So after soaking it with some oil for a while, I managed to get it apart, then cleaned everything up. Aside from the rust, there wasn't much functionally wrong with it, so I got it repainted and all the bar...
Restoration of Vintage Engineers Desk Lamp - Saved from the Scrap Pile!
มุมมอง 31K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I got this old engineer's desk lamp as part of an auction lot. It was so rusty and in such poor shape I nearly tossed it - but thought it would make a decent restoration project! It was badly seized, so taking the thing apart took a fair amount of time and effort and left a big pile of rust flakes - but I was victorious! Once apart, I removed all the rust and old paint, filled in the rust pits ...
Rusty Vintage 'Bon Clou' Can Opener Restoration
มุมมอง 23K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I found this 'Bon Clou' can opener in the bottom of a box of auction tools I bought a few months back. It was in a pretty sorry state, and I nearly threw it out! But I decided it was worth a second chance, so I went ahead and started the restoration. My original plan was to polish all the rust pits out of the sides, but once I cleaned it all up, I realised that wasn't going to be possible - it ...
Rusty Carpenter's Try Square Restoration
มุมมอง 17K3 ปีที่แล้ว
For this restoration, I found this old carpenter's try square. It was in a fairly sorry state, but still intact and functional - so a great little restoration project! I took the square apart - destroying the pins in the process - and then cleaned up, derusted and zinc plated the metal blade. Then I sanded down and repaired the wooden handle. Unfortunately sanding it down made it a little thinn...
Battered and Bent Vintage Screwdriver Restoration - Mirror Finish!
มุมมอง 11K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I got this battered and bent old cabinet screwdriver at an auction a while ago. I figured it was worth saving! I have no idea how old it is, but clearly it's had a hard life in recent years. The shaft had a nasty bend in it, it was covered in paint and the tip was rounded off. I pulled it apart, then spent some time heating it up and bending the shaft straight again. Then I annealed it, sanded ...
Restoring a 1950s Vintage Tilley Lamp
มุมมอง 17K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I got this old 1950s Tilley X246A paraffin (kerosene) pressure lamp at an auction a while back, and thought it would make a decent restoration project. I was tempted to go all in on it and strip off the paint etc, but the lamp wasn't in bad shape. I like things to have a bit of wear and history to them, so I decided to just polish it up, replace the seals and get it cleaned up and working again...
Can These Household Goods Polish Brass? Let's Find Out!
มุมมอง 1.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
When I published my first video on here - the brass bell restoration - I got a few comments about different ways to polish brass. Some I'd heard of - lime juice, for example - and others were completely new to me, such as tamarind paste. So, I thought I'd give all these a try and see how well they all worked! So I got together a few things to try: lime juice, tamarind paste, WD-40, tomato ketch...
Restoration of Rusty Vintage Oil/Paraffin Lamp
มุมมอง 1.6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I got this pair of lamps on eBay a little while back. I don't know much about them, beyond that they were in a pretty sorry state! I would guess they're around 100-150 years old, but that's just a guess. The design is curious, too; what were they used for? I'd have thought some sort of bicycle lamp, but those are usually coloured. Railway lamps are usually bigger and have glass on multiple side...
Vintage Rusty Flame Thrower Restoration (okay, it's a weed burner...)
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I picked up this rusty old vintage weed burner at an auction last summer. Nobody else wanted it and I wasn't even totally sure what it was, but the price was right! It was rusty and looked fit only for the scrap pile, but after looking it over I figured it was good enough to at least try to save it. So I stripped it all down, removed all the rust using electrolysis and got to work restoring it....
Antique Brass Bell Restoration
มุมมอง 108K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Restoring an antique brass bell I picked up on eBay. I don't know what it was coated with, but it took some serious polishing to bring it back to life! Not the most complicated restoration ever I know, the idea here was for me to get the hang of doing videos - camera angles etc. This is my first TH-cam video, hopefully of many more to come. I hope you enjoy it regardless! I don't claim to be an...
Dremel makes sanding drums and polishing wheels that are < 1" in diameter.
I did the exact same job on mine and it works a treat.
In our “ throw away” society it’s nice to see someone take the time and care to give this tool another life.
Brilliant Vid
Excellent video
Brilliant job, are they safe to use indoors? IE Carbon monoxide etc ?
Have adequate ventilation.
Lovely job, you've inspired me to do my one!.
That is the single ugliest thing I have ever seen in my life.
Remember my dad had one in the old house he was a plumber years ago all ways wondered what it was like fired up now i know thanks
Pity you didn't really get it going in the end, did you ever find out what was wrong with it? It would be great to see a follow-up video where you get it to work properly. They burn really hot with a powerful blue flame when working properly, that was not even getting going in the video.
That's a beauty! Nice color.
When you open the box you can see a bunch of orbs flying around…
The best way to destroy an antique is with a wirebrush, wirewheel.
Curious, did you graduate from a Canadian engineering school?
Awesome work 👏
I think the main reason why people like these planes so much ie the way they cut is due to the thickness of their blades, in the old days things were made to a standard not a price!
I have one exactly equal that one, but I live in Brazil. Have no idea how it get here and from where. I found in an old workshop.
We have the exact same one on my fireplace, my 12yr old son and I have wanted to restore it for a while now. Thank you so much for this video!
Cheers mate. Now off to do mine. Fingers crossed
Good luck!
Painful
Okay
Very good! I'm from Americana SP Brasil.
What enamel did you use/recommend for the hood? It's a great shade of brown just like the original and must stand some heat. I'm currently fettling a Guardsman and he looks anything but at the moment 😂. Nice lamp tho
Actually it came to me like that, the hood was in great shape already and just needed a clean! Unfortunately I've yet to find any decent DIY-level enamel that will hold up to the heat and still look good.
I already know that this isn't a Coleman kerosene lantern with viynl plastic mantels required to be on the heaters rods. This lantern was manufactured by a different company. It has a different brand name.
The author of this educational video said that this antique brass postage scale must have a 1919 patent date! I know that it's so easy to head down the path of uncertainty these days. 📅 ⚖️ 😳 🤣 👏 😆 🙄 ⚖️
I definitely do remind these things. It's the Whitmore woodworkers vice. Since I've seen one of these tools in a 1980 and 1981 Branciforte Jr. High School. I really shouldn't have taken wood shop at first. I should've taken human biology when I was in the 7th grade. 🏫 😳 🤣 😂 😄 😀 🏫
I still think about the previous desk lamps that I used to have.
Great video thank you. I have just found a lamp in its original box
Good luck with it!
Nice job!
Thanks!
Kia Ora & Good Afternoon from Auckland, New Zealand …great video bro …
Thanks! 👍
Great video thanks for sharing.
Very fun to watch! Nicely done restoration. Thanks for showing us your process!
My pleasure! 👍
Much improved👍👍
Thanks a lot 😊
Very good! I'm from Americana SP - Brasil.
Thanks!
The Brasso messed it up.
How?
Beautiful restoration
Great job on the resto. Been using these a good long while. Over 30 years. As well as Taylors yacht stoves and heaters. The trick is to wait until the last possible moment to turn it on. When my igniter is just about to go out, I twist the valve, instant clean burn. The yellow flames will coat it in filth quicker than anything so just be patient and don't turn it on too soon. The same with the Taylors, a shot of meths, let it all burn, turn it on, instant blue flame. Happy burning!
You need a much bigger soldering iron like 100 to 150 watt and use an acid based flux, it will solder better. Acid based fluxs are liquid not paste and clean the surface better, work much better for this. Also a silver bearing solder flows really good here, Love the lantern great job,
Thanks!
To polish inside things like this, Get a length of hardwood dowel and cut a slot about an inch and a half (or 40mm ) down the centre. Then you can wrap wet and dry paper or soft cloth around the end and spin it with your electric drill! I have done this innumerable times over the years!! Lovely little bell restoration.
I have just bought one, same year as yours, but speculum/chrome finish which is a bit pitted, but a bit of solvol autosalve should tidy that up, hopefully not too much of the chrome is gone. The frame is quite rusty so will need a clean up and a bit of paint. The top/vent is chipped and rusty in places so will probably need renewing. I haven't got it yet so I am only going by the E-bay pictures, but I have every confidence I can return it to some of its former glory. Not sure how I will go about polishing the brass yet but I will think of something. Thanks for your video, I'm sure I will be referring to it quite frequently, but it doesn't look like rocket science so I am sure I will cope🤣🤣
Very nice indeed!😊
Amazing finished job, i have one of these, great inspiration to get it done 👍
Those are really nice scales. A fantastic restoration job 😊
I love to revamp the Tilley lamp I inherited from my father
Nice sympathetic restoration so it still looks it's age but isn't grimy! Thanks for sharing
Another antique ruined. It’s a store door bell. I have a couple.
Good for you.
great video, l have one in same conditon will try to do the same repair.
I have an antique bell for sale
eBay's usually a good place for selling things like that.
@@OldtoNewRestorations thanks
very saitisfying... well done.
Thank you! 👍
Really good job.👍
Thank you! 👍
Definitely the wrong approach. Start with brass cleaning dip then use 0000 steel wool and then polishing compounds on felt wheels.
Why?
