Handgun Safe
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 23 ก.ค. 2019
I started Handgun Safe as a resource for gun owners in 2015, after I wrote an investigative piece for American Shooting Journal. The piece, titled “Gun Safe Cracking," looked at the unregulated industry of Chinese-made gun safes. Initially, Vimeo was my chosen platform for sharing video, and the name of my channel was Handgun Safe Research. In 2019 I switched to TH-cam. The name of my website remains Handgun Safe Research. -Dave Goetzinger

I know it's unusual, but if you still have the means to test it out, do you know if it would fit the full sized 6 inch revolver? I collect antique revolvers and am hoping to get travel sized lockbox that doesn't suck, for secure storage as precaution.
I don't have the box anymore. I returned it to the manufacturer.
I’m a dad who just wants to protect my family the best I can. I feel like we’re generally living in a world without standards these days and I don’t have time research every field. It’s exhausting. Seeing 175 views on this is sad. This is really informative and seems like an important starting point for anyone knew to buying a safe.
Any coupons or Black Friday sales?
Steelhead has a deal going where you can get a free cable with your purchase. See the details in the description above.
Amazing video have you ever thought of making your own safe?
I've thought about it, though I am reluctant to pursue the idea. The kinds of features gun owners have become accustomed to, and expect, are often the very features I would avoid incorporating into a design of my own. I might invest a lot of resources in starting a new business only to find that I cannot persuade the target market.
Can’t like this video enough. Should be required viewing for young people.
Hello, What’s your recommendation for the best handgun biometric safe? I’m currently exploring options on the market. My budget is $300, but I’m open to slightly higher prices if needed. Thank you!
The handgun safes I recommend are in my playlist of approved safes.
great vid! i recently found your channel through a vid you made 3 years ago on the vt10 and vt20 do you know if they fixed the way you were able to get into them with a paperclip with the newer models? i was looking to get a vs10i and wondering if thats a issue i should be worried about thanks!
I haven't looked at a Vaultek product in a long time. I was the first to hack their flagship models in 2016, and I tested them for several years after that. I would like to forget about those things.
@ thanks for the info!
If you look at the demographic distribution in China you will see that there is not enough young people in the country to replace their aging workforce. We should start seeing the collapse of Chinese manufacturing in the next 15 years or so. Even with China lying about the numbers is easy to see that the number of workers 55 and older cannot be replaced by those who are under 35. The number of young people will not be enough to man the factories, which will drive up labor costs and force out companies from China.
I think you're way off base. As I discussed in a previous video, universities in China are generating more graduates in STEM subjects than any other nation in the world, by the millions. China is far, far outpacing all other nations. These are not the best university programs, but China's growing work force has been adequate to maintain China's status as the world's manufacturing resource. I do not for one moment believe westerners can trust data on births and deaths coming from China. The CCP controls all information released to the west. If you wish to believe there are "experts" in the U.S. who have accurate data, you are free to believe that. I suggest you gauge China's strengths and capabilities by their actions, the number of STEM subject graduates, the steady expansion of the Belt and Road Initiative, the size of China's military, etc. China is in no danger of collapse.
@@HandgunSafe Just go to wikipedia, type in China demographics and look how top heavy their population is. That isn't an opinion. Their population is old and not getting younger. Their "One Child" policy is now catching up. Just do a cursory search. They are also over counting their female population.
I've gotten thirty seconds into the video and you're already referring to people as, "gun fanatics." If you are trying to dehumanize people because of reason X or reason Y, by all means send yourself down the path of creature self-destruction. The last thing our society needs is more "experts" using debasing language, even if you are correct about a safe's flaws or reasons given for people's justification for purchasing a lower grade product. Peace out, this is the last time I click on one of your videos. I'm done with creators like you who insert subverting language into their videos.
There are FUDDs, but there are also Yosemite SAMs (Second Amendment More Ons). Hard to find someone like HgS who shows common sense these days.
Honestly the first thing I noticed is that cable. It is a fair bit heftier than other lockboxes I’ve seen.
What a coincidence: I was at the Steelhead website today looking at their simplex models. I am considering them along with the Vline Brute and possibly the Titan Pistol Vault.
I like the V-Line Brute, too. My top choice is probably the Steelhead Fast-Access boxes (large and small), followed by the Brute, then the Viking pistol box with Simplex lock (it has an LED inside). But don't let me complicate your decision. 🤔
@@HandgunSafe If I may ask, what leads you to prefer the Steelhead to the Vline? They appear to me to be equivalent in any respect I can think of. I was probably going to buy whichever was marginally cheaper.
@@pauljenkins6877 Price is a perfectly good consideration. My preference has to do with the dimensions and the slightly more compact design of the Steelhead. Also, I don't really like the gas struts that come on top-opening pistol boxes. Sometimes you get a good strut that won't impede your attempt to open the box and that will catch the lid before it drops. But sometimes you get a strut that fights you opening the box and lets the lid drop, so that you smash your finger.
Aren't these the ones that are super easy to open, courtesy of them having very few possible combinations?
I'm just cutting and pasting responses at this point: The 5-button Simplex lock allows for a total of 2,162 possible combinations. For an understanding of the mathematics, see my video, “How Many Combinations Are Possible With a Simplex Lock?" The math in that video is simple enough for a middle school student to replicate.
@@HandgunSafe Sure, but if the button bypass method works, you don't need to go nowhere near that number to get it open. Correct me if I'm wrong, though. th-cam.com/video/-o_l69ZoKgs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bZT9Opwc9yKtIXsd&t=44
@@thearousedeunuch The lock in that video is a different kind of lock. That is not a 5-button Simplex lock. The bypass attack shown in that video will not work on a 5-button Simplex lock.
Can you test the cable with your lineman pliers?
I only have one cable that goes with another Steelhead box. The cable in the video came with that box, and I've returned it. So I don't have a Steelhead cable to sacrifice at the moment. I might do that in the future, if I feel like getting another cable.
I wish I could send you a handgun safe from South Africa. The standards for gun safes are very stricted and set by the national police service. As a result they only vary in size. Same gauge of steel. Same theft resistant lock. All gun safes must be inspected by a police officer after installation as well. That's where safe storage laws are going. Every handgun safe will eventually need to be certified by Underwriters Laboratory before sale. Honestly, I wish there were just an oligopoly of brands that offered good safes and the riffraff were driven out of the market.
Are you in South Africa? If you are, or if you know somebody living there, maybe we can arrange something. Contact me by email. You can find my email on the "About" page of my channel.
@@HandgunSafe I will send you pictures so you understand what I mean by "they only vary in size." Basically, I assume the quality of the safes only varies at the level of welds and paint. The government industrial designers specified everything. I have only ever seen pictures of the rifle safes, so they might use thicker steel. Bottom line, I'll try to send you a small safe, but whatever you can glean from it will apply to at least anything you would call a "handgun safe." The same lock boxes are required for storing guns in a vehicle as well. I'm very curious what you think of their quality. I will explain more in email, but there are many important reasons why SA has the gun regulations they do. Safe storage rules serve many functions in SA society and tie in with other gun regulations.
By any chances you would have coupon codes for this safe?
I'll talk with Steelhead Outdoors about that.

The scariest part of this video is the doll moving :(
(Erroneous assumptions removed. 1081*2 combinations it is. Still, too few for my liking.) Now, if there were more buttons... or if the resetting failed combination would take more than a moment... such lock would be more practical.
The 5-button Simplex lock allows for a total of 2,162 possible combinations. For an understanding of the mathematics, see my video, “How Many Combinations Are Possible With a Simplex Lock?" The math in that video is simple enough for a middle school student to replicate.

@@LynxSnowCat I don't know who you're responding to, but the lock allows for 2,162 combinations. That's it. If you're responding to the other guy, I think I understand what you're trying to get at but he might be confused. He would probably be better off just looking at my video. But thank you for trying to broaden his thinking. 😊
@@LynxSnowCat Yeas, I see my mistake now. And I never knew about half-press. Still, 2186 combinations seriously limit the usability.
The 2162 combinations is probably enough if one's use case is to lock the gun up in the car while running into the post office or other prohibited zone for a brief errand. For in the home where kids have access for long periods of time, for that use case I would want more than just 2162 possibilities.
Hi, what do you think about the Viking VS-35SX which is a front opening safe, as opposed to top-opening? Also on Amazon but a bit pricier at $290. The door is only 5mm thick, but it uses the Simplex lock too. Capacity is greater than this 35SX at only $40 more.
I like Viking Safe products. If I've endorsed a product on my recommendations list (see playlists), then I endorse the safe.
RE the stuck mag: just depress the front of the third bullet. Don't load it with even pressure and it will work.
Sold out - only the smallest one is available right now. 😢
There's an aspect to Point #2 that you didn't address. There can in fact be a difference between the intent of the manufacturer of a safe and how the safe is used by the gun owners who buy it. That said, the practices you speak of are so common and widespread that it would be hard for me to accept that the manufacturers are ignorant to the likelihood that their product will be used as permanent storage. So in the end, as I write this comment and think about, I still find myself agreeing with you. Good video, btw, and thanks for posting it.
You may have a point. Unfortunately, as I explained in my previous video, the Chinese manufacturers who design and produce most of these devices don't know what they're doing. They don't own guns or live in compliance with gun laws or have a clear idea of how these devices might be used. Industry is a mess.
Looks like you could just pry down with a flathead screwdriver above the lock where the button is. Someone could do that and get a pleasant surprise when expecting to try harder.
"...staging guns around the home. This is a bad idea." THANK YOU! How do you address those who claim you (and lock picking hobbyists etc) are thieves, and thus promote the idea of, as LPL has described it, "security through obscurity"?
All hackers aren't thieves. I don't know any hacker who would promote the idea of security through obscurity. In one of my latest videos, about the e-stash handgun safe, I address this issue.
@@HandgunSafe omigosh. I left an important word out, whether thru my own error, or one of the bugs in the virtual keyboard I use! Very sorry, as it changes the whole meaning. I meant to say, "How do you address those who claim you...are HELPING thieves...", not "are thieves". Whoo boy what a blunder. I meant how people say that showing how to defeat a lock is making it easier for the criminals.
@@danielgoodman3578 How can I be helping thieves when I am not responsible for the design defects that allow these devices to be opened so easily? I am not the one providing easy access to handgun safes. I am doing nothing more than showing what manufacturers either fail or refuse to share with customers, who have a right to make an informed decision as to whether to buy a handgun safe.
@@HandgunSafe Thank you
Honestly, any security products like locks, safes, and even ones in the digital realm should have people who are very good at breaking into them try it out before it even hits the market. Then we wouldn't even need these kinds of videos.
Pausing in the end of the stolen valor segment before you list the arguments, then I'll continue watching after this comment. The stolen valor claims I'm most used to are those against weirdos who slap together some sort of military uniform that is actually decorated with anything among actual military patches, rank insignia, ribbons/medals, maybe etc. Some will not be wearing the uniform correctly or will maybe just wear part of a uniform. When confronted in public, they'll have a made up story about real US military experience that never happened. It differs from tacticool gun owners/militia types who either would never make such claims nor wear such adornments, but take an interest in the gear itself like plate carriers and so on.
The effort has more to do with learning to talk the talk, with suggesting and hinting that one has military or law-enforcement background one doesn't have. The line between Mr. Tactical and a full-blown military/law-enforcement fake is blurry. It shouldn't be.
There was an Instagram influencer whom I cannot remember her handle, but she got mad and blocked me when I started pointing out how insecure this 4 foot long gun box with a tubular lock, the hinges on the outside, and only one latch in the center keeping the whole thing closed was that she was getting paid promotions for... This thing is about as secure as Staples branded file cabinet with a wafer lock! What concerned me more, is there was people complaining in the comments about how much a "decent" safe costs $900+ and this piece of garbage is much more affordable! at $200 - $300!
I think that one safe which was mounted to the wall was held in place with just drywall anchors!
Hey, I have that Fenix light. They're great value.
I wish I could reach into the ether and have knowledge in hand.
I was in the Army Reserve as a Combat Engineer. I carried what I was issued and learned what I was taught. Since getting out, I have learned far more and invested in far better equipment and arms. It’s not to convince anyone of anything. I don’t wear it to the grocery store. I’m not pretending to be former military… I *am* former military. I learn it and I have it because I believe there is a better-than-zero chance I will need it. *Being in the military convinced me of that.*
The only part of this that doesn't make sense is demeaning gun owners for purchasing tactical equipment and getting trained. Sure, some may be pretending to be something they aren't. The rest are preparing for hard times.
I don’t think he was trying to be demeaning so much as noting that a person spends a lot of time and money on preparing for extremely low probability events, while at the same time tries to argue against the testing of a gun safe designed to mitigate a low probability event. I may be wrong though. Cheers!
God damn... The amount of times I've heard those arguments in my gunsmithing classes when I simply mention that someone should store their gun somewhere safe is ridiculous... You'd think they have no idea how dangerous they are and yet they're going to school to professionally work on them... SMH
great show i love learning even at my age
This is dumb. The "arguments". You need to test safety equipment to make sure it works. If it doesn't, then you need to find a solution. The illusion of security is worse than having the knowledge of no security.
Your opening describes the Dunning-Kruger effect very accurately.
FYI the original Dunning-Kruger paper found that people are fairly accurate at assessing their own ability
That delusional disorder is what we like to call "Fudd Syndrome" 🤣
You have opened my eyes to mechanical flaws that I would've remained ignorant of otherwise. You provide a consumer service and a demonstrable warning for those that are securing a tool that requires security. There's no need for further explanation. Let the djcks be djcks.
Just because they were in the military does not mean they know how to properly/safely use weapons...but stolen valor is when someone rides on vet coattails by pretending to be a vet, cashing in on any non official benefits...and generally making vets look bad (we do it to ourselves enough as it is).
I'm hoping former military personnel who catch wind of this video get the tone. I mean no disrespect to them. I'm offended by what has happened to gun culture.
Good, honest response-thank you for saying what needs to be said. It’s genuinely unfortunate that you even have to make a dedicated video to defend the obvious need for testing, but sadly, ignorance and isolation are hard to break through. People are often coddling their own unrebukable opinions, unwilling to engage with perspectives that challenge their beliefs. That’s just human nature, and it’s especially prevalent online where echo chambers reinforce this mindset. But despite the resistance, you’re still doing vital work, and it’s appreciated. It should be straightforward: if a product fails to meet safety standards, it’s a bad product. End of story. People shouldn’t take offense at factual criticism. But of course, this is the internet, and logic often takes a back seat to emotion. I think there may be a connection between this and how the handgun safe industry markets itself, linking the product’s value to the deeply ingrained importance of gun ownership itself. By critiquing these safes, it can feel to some like an indirect “attack” on the Second Amendment, as if questioning the product is questioning their right to own a gun. Obviously, that’s not the case, but it seems that kind of emotional reasoning might be driving some of the backlash.
I hope you will consider evaluating and warning the public about the StopBox if you conclude that it’s deficient. The company claims that it’s a “handgun retention device” intended for temporary storage of firearms in use and in the presence of the owner, but their marketing contradicts that position by depicting it used within the home on nightstands (i.e., for routine storage of a loaded home defense pistol) and including references to its ease of access in the dark (also suggestive of routine, likely unattended use in the home). With so few combinations, I’m concerned that this product is going to result in a tragic outcome for a curious child or teenager, as I believe most any determined person could open it within a few minutes or less. It’s become very popular, and people are doubtlessly using it as a substitute for a proper handgun safe.
I evaluated and dismissed this product years ago. You can find the video if you scroll down my uploads. But I'm glad you posted your concern. The product is till selling, and I should probably revisit the thing and do another video.
Ha! Halloween flavor much appreciated 😂
This was extremely helpful to explain why most of the recommended options for a pistol safe i found were so expensive compared to other ones i saw. My dad kept telling me that theres cheaper ones to get (he offered to buy it for me), but i kept insiting on ones on your list. Thanks for all the useful behind the scenes info and efforts you put in to making the world a safer place. I firmly believe that if people properly store their firearms and unauthorized access is prevented, a lot of gun violence can be eliminated. Having an actual functioning safe is the first step to achieving that. The next step is using it...
The Simplex lock only has only 1081 combinations UNLESS you use the undocumented "half press" mode. Pushing each button actually rotates the wheen pack through two quanta. If you push a putton (or combination of buttons) in half way, you can re-use the other half of the press later in the combination. The downside, besides time, is that the need to moderate the finger pressure can work against you when opening the lock under a life critical stress sitation like a home invasion.
Please see my video, in playlists, on how to use the Simplex lock. Never try playing expert with an expert. If you want to keep doing that, I'll just hide you as a user.
@@HandgunSafe I offer my sincere apologies and will not further post in your threads. Best wishes.
When I run into a dial ring that needs a small amount of vertical adjustment outside the range of play in the hole, I find I can often dremmel the existing hold for the magic module existing screw locations to add enough up ad down play to proerly center the dial without drilling into the safe. Also missed as the traditional wisdon of "do not re-use the spline key" The spline key is generally oriented with the flag oiinting away frm the center of the spindle rather than towards it.
Interesting. I can see that installing and reinstalling a spline key repeatedly can result in the key not seating very firmly, but I think removing it once or twice won't hurt. The spline key is made of slightly harder metal than the spindle, which is brass, so the wear is happening to the spindle. As for the direction of the flag at the end, I followed the manufacturer's instructions. The designer of Big Red locks designed the locks to standards and drafted the instructions. I think he's a better authority on how to install these.
@@HandgunSafe Thanks for the informative reply. I over-generalized (my apologies); the S&G 6730 instructions say (and show) flag out and assumed that was the same on Big Red. The spline key on S&G is brass; I believe that Big Red supplies stainless (?) so it is harder, and I have read that Big Red supplies two. Once again, the "use once only" is an S&G recommendation, perhaps not for Big Red. I always push the spline key in finger tight to I can remove it wihtout tools until the testing is done. I agree 100% with you on the manfuacturer instructions. Big Red seems to go a bit further than S&G on niceties like including a thread cleanup tool. "Read this site in Chinese" on website - interesting clue that this is Chicom merchandise. I assume you made the dial alignment "mistake" for theatrical purposes, and doubt you really would have made that goof in on install. I had the identical issue on an electronic=>6730 conversion, but resolved it dremmeling a vertical notch in the screw hole on the dial instead of tapping new holes in the safe (with my luck, the tap would break off). I wonder about the current viability of Big Red since it appears they have not updated their website in years. MIssing image on home page unaddressed for ages? Amateur hour. " Overall a very nicely done video.
@@robertboudrie2234 Okay, I just followed up with the owner. He's still in business! The IT guy has closed up shop, and this is making it hard for the owner to get passwords for site maintenance, etc. If you want to find Big Red locks, try MBA USA, Inc.
I really like this lock, but I’ve been hearing a lot of negative feedback from technicians who have been in the industry for 30 to 40 years. They’ve mentioned having to replace a lot of these locks due to various mechanical failures.
I seriously doubt they're having much trouble with these locks. Technicians, who are often locksmiths who have expanded their services by getting certification to service specific brands, are partial to the brands they sell. Big Red locks are solid, and you can get them with four number combinations and manipulation-prevention technology built into them.
@@HandgunSafe man I really want to believe you because they look good Have you encountered any issues with your lock? How long have you owned it, and have you experienced any problems?. the negative feedback surrounding these locks It seems like some people might prefer to stick with what they know, while I’ve seen multiple individuals in a Facebook group who have extensive locksmith experience mention that these locks might be less reliable and are a cheaper off-brand Chinese version of Sargent & Greenleaf. They suggested that you often get what you pay for. I’m unsure who to believe. I’m trying to gather more information, but it’s challenging to sift through varying opinions from industry veterans. I don’t want to risk getting locked out of my safe, so I’d appreciate any insights you have. If you have any additional details or resources, that would be really helpful! And also, they said it wouldn’t fit on my safe that used to have a s&g r674 they said this about the big red group 2 lock I wanted to get the four wheel or three wheel one but they said this……. Big Red is made for a direct replacement of Mosler. If you don't have a Mosler, stick with S&G 👍 So I can’t use it even if I wanted too
@@HandgunSafe how long have you had your lock for and have you had any issues and have you heard any issues about them and I was also told I wouldn’t be able to use it because of this Big Red is made for a direct replacement of Mosler. If you don't have a Mosler, stick with S&G 👍 I had a s&g r6714 group 2 lock can I not replace it with the big red four wheel version?
