I saw this show in Tivol way back in 1959. I mostly remember the soccer field with a pith ball tossed back and forth between the goalposts. Then Mr. Torp rolled up his sleeve and held out his arm and said he fed them on his forearm. Shocked this young 9 year old, I can still feel the shock! I'll never know if he was telling the truth or if it was a part of the show.

I loved the childrens' play house. Everything down to scale.

I was under the impression that a flea circus was just something that happened in old Bugs Bunny cartoons...

That's where it starts... next it's fish, then crustaceans. Pretty soon you've got a torture chamber full of slugs, hermit crabs, and large beetles... coming home after the work day and locking yourself in the office for a few hours of plucking legs, poking with red-hot paperclips, and Colosseum-style gladiator battles to the death for your amusement... but that's okay... it's just bugs you tell yourself... just bugs.

They arent trained. They are just walking. The wagons are tied around their necks. They only live a couple days, and arent smart enough to train. They just walk and the wagon behind it gets pulled.

Ok, just wondering this but, WHO THOUGHT OF THE IDEA OF THE FLEA CIRCUS IN THE FIRST PLACE!?!!

They are probably happier being more active and exercising as opposed to spending their days in dense fur. I just wonder where she gets the fleas from, maybe she has a cat? There must be some serious discipline to train these fleas, as their brains are very tiny. I wish my dog could do all this. Also I would be curious to learn how fleas from a chinese flea circus permorm in comparison, the actual human chinese circus performers are usually better, inovative stunts, etc.

I always heard about flea circuses, but never got to see it in action. I guess these days it will be regarded as 'cruelty to animals' as I see from some of the comments here!

Why cant these miraculous creatures be taught to turn modern turbine blades and generate electricity? HmmmMMmm? Ever though of that Mr. Scientist?

@Fasty Hopefully, the poor flea wasn't too severely chastised for dropping the ball.

@mzdoolittle What? He was clearly freaking out because he dropped the ball in front of a live audience and was afraid of what his master would do to punish him after the show!

I don't think the fleas are trained at all. I think they are being used, doing what they do naturally. The one with the" ball" was obviously only struggling, as it kept struggling once the "ball" was dropped. I was not amused.

It's nice to know there is an actual purpose for fleas.
