those who may confuse and doubt its efficiency, i’d say, tarps are main material in schooners, the sails made of it, linen fibers become larger when its wet, and literally become waterproof, to increase its dirability it gets oil impregnation, nowadays rubber used, so sailors used to made clothes out of old tarps, ever since steam engines took place of classic ships, after tarps were only used in tents, but produce proccess was mechanized, ironically this material become cheaper and market was full of it, so people decide to make cloathes out of it due to the low demand in ship building, so this heavy coats and pants were only employee cloathes untill some decide to color pants with “indigo” color and for a century now jeans are most popular dress in the world, so basically the roots of this material is in the sea, so why shouldn’t we use it properly in emergency cases?

When the sailers of the USS Indianapolis were stranded out at sea, their life preservers only had a floatation time of like 20 hours. After that they would become water logged.. when being rescued after 3 days in the water, the sailers were so fatigued and mentally exhausted, they didn't realize they were keeping the life vest afloat instead of the best keeping them afloat.. this technique would have probably served them better.
