128 Love Song
I would gladly have asked permission from the holders of the audio's copyright but I don't know how. We post on YT first then face the music. I say this video is commentary on the importance of embracing the mundane around us- of paying attention to the everyday things.
The first track is The Ocean Blue's A Question of Travel- Americans dream of exotic foreign locales and I contrast this with the most mundane- a suburban beltway.
The second is clips of ads by Les Paul and Mary Ford for defunct retailer Robert Hall- a pioneer big box category killer that boomed at the same time 128 was built.
The third is a Boston radio news clip from 1961- source forgotten. It is about an unsolved missing person case. At the time speculation was that her remains were buried under a widening of this road.
The fourth is Right Back Where We Started From as recorded by Army Navy. It ends as we approach Routes 9 and 90. These road junctions represents me approaching my MetroWest roots. The first house my mother lived in was pulled down to build 90 and she grew up near 9. Father is from Worcester, which is reached by either 9 or 90.
And my apologies for the lousy video. This car doesn't have a flat spot on the dash so I had to hold the camera and I shake.

Red Line Quincy to Dorchester

Most of Quincy Center to Andrew. I help my subpar camera up to the window thinking I would record the housing stock. That didn't really come out. At about 9:30 I tilted down to pick up the unused (?) siding to the Globe. The Red Line is my favorite- big cars, little sway, generally fast.
Last Train?

I suspect the last New England Southern train of 2012 heads north Saturday noontime. I won't be able to check, but I also suspect those hoppers were dropped on the bridge over the Merrimack to keep people from crossing it. Smile.
Boott Mills Cotton Looms

I love the sound of old clacking power looms- it's the flying shuttle, or updated version thereof. You have to understand I like Minimalist music as well. I find repetitive sounds relaxing. Left on your own you may sing or think of words of wisdom, I think of looms. These are the 1920s Draper looms in Lowell's Boott Cotton Mills museum. My only regret is that they have too few staff to run more...

Grass blowing wind. Conversation with local at the end. Note- it's not the Pike, it's 128. And WBZ is still in Brighton. I have no idea why the video is so bad, and as this is the 7th time I've tried uploading this I don't care anymore. The audio is better, and I'm grateful all 3 minutes loaded.

After a blackout power wasn't fully restored- one of the phases was out. I understand what that means in theory and in practice to the customer but I can't really explain the physics. Sunday afternoon about 5, I was waiting in my car on Vassar St when I heard the horn blowing for the Mass Av crossing. Afraid I would miss the train I grabbed my camera but not the tripod, which is by way of an excuse for the jumpy image. A few gons for scrap and a few refrigerated cars for Chelsea(?) The horn blows for Main St. These trains will originate in Worcester now, right?

Tower Crew

A crew of riggers was erecting something on one of the towers on the summit of Mt Ascutney while I was photographing mountains. I have to admit I didn't pay them much attention. The music is the prélude to Ravel's Tombeau de Couperin, one of my favorites and one I find particularly uplifting.

From just past the gatehouse to the near- summit parking. Gets jumpy in places because my camera was sliding off the dash. Will post a sped up version if requested, as this is almost 10 minutes. You can get huffy and say I should have hiked up, but those are 4 hours I better used elsewhere.

With a two cylinder two stroke rear mounted 356cc engine, a kei car in Japan. At less than 1000lbs, it was exempted from US safety legislation. I don't like the two stroke, but for crawling up Harvard St what more do you need? Air conditioning.

Sounds slightly faster than what I remember Lochcarron having in Gala in the '80s. Woollen mill. Sounded more like about about 1 pass per second, as I could make out the shuttle hitting the end, then the heddles dropping. Used to hear it walking home from the Co-op if the doors were open in the summer. They're all rapier looms now. Have to go to Elliot's or Dalgleish's in Selkirk now to hear a flying shuttle loom.

Short answer is yes. I'd like a credit as recording "engineer." It's a museum so I can't take much credit, and the video and audio can only be used for personal or educational purposes (their rules- I didn't sign a release). This video and a 13min track have the output reduced. I can make a go of creating a mp3 from the raw files if you like. But my camera has a terrible mic.
