    Just an amazing example of what improvisation really is! Totally agree on that statement - inventing melodies over tonal centers is the key! Thanks a lot for that great summary and those perfect exercise routine‘s (to be used on any instrument, I‘m on the saxophone and I do the same every day). I‘m going to show this to my students. Thanks for that great contribution, Simon!

    Another great thing to do with improvising melodies is to use motifs. All great jazz masters use motifs in their improvisation. You can repeat the exact motif or you can make it a rhythmic motif. To do a rhythmic motif, repeat the same short or medium length rhythm two or three times, but use higher or lower notes on each repeat.

  • @drbalalajka
    @drbalalajka ปีที่แล้ว

    I've sort been doing this a lot as a kid, which is why I've been able to improvise pretty well without being very good at my instrument. I have in later years made it into an exercise of sorts. I choose a key and... just mess around with it. Playing up and down the scale, arpeggios and patterns, sure but not in a structured manner. The tempo is also rather free, sometimes I feel a tempo, sometimes not. If I accidentally hit a note outside of the key I stop and go back and do it again to hear if I like it. Maybe I should do this more often. Really liked this video. Inspiring!

    • @simon.petermann
      @simon.petermann ปีที่แล้ว

    • @yzimsx
      @yzimsx ปีที่แล้ว

      @@simon.petermann Yes, it is horribly wrong that people are taught to read and not speak. And then they're taught "theory" where simple practical things are presented in complicated ways and made to look difficult, bordering on dangerous. This convinces them that not trying to say anything of their own was for their own good. It's better to stay safe and stick to performing legitimate pieces in a guaranteed respectable manner.

    • @simon.petermann
      @simon.petermann ปีที่แล้ว

      haha, yes, that's very true! When I grew up and sought my way into jazz playing and jazz theory, everyone wanted to teach me the jazz scales. And OMG, there is a different scale on every chord, how devastating is that! Now, 25 years later i can tell you: I NEVER think about scales when I am playing... I think of 1000 other things... In the meantime I don't even thing people starting with Jazz improv should be bothered with scales too much... I now follow a quite different approach in my teaching now...

    • @simon.petermann
      @simon.petermann ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oscaryiu3329 Most probably you should use Aeolian. Thats the most common for this. But you can use the one mode you like the most. If you wsnt to try it out, you could start with a childrens song and then play that in various minor modes. I used to do this with "Happy Birthday" for example.

    100% agree this is a very important and much neglected area of practice for many people. If you can't play melodies then everything will just sound like the scales and arpeggios that they are. It's one of the missing links between practice and performance I think.
