Simulated Process Color Separation in Adobe Photoshop

This video and user was on youtube about a year or so ago but then they vanished. Luckily I saved this gem of a tutorial beforehand. It seems to me like the screen printing powers that be try to go through great lengths to keep the power of color separations a secret. Well no more! Scott Fresener's reign ends here once and for all!
(will remove video if original author requests -_-)
This is by far the best photoshop simulated process color sep tutorial i've come across. None of that sh*t color range select garbage and over priced actions here. Hopefully this helps others as much as it helped me.

By far the best and most professional video out there. But I have so many questions now.. If anyone knows where the original authors videos reside now... I'd love to study more. Old school litho guy here trying make the leap to screen printing and this has been my bible and foundation. Thanks.
Kato Kung Lee, MS1, El Satánico, Masakre y El Greco.
Los infernales contra kato Kung Lee, esto de vio muchas veces en la México 😁😁😁
Alguien tiene un link para ver la película completa
Great process, I'll apply this knowledge with my screen printing experience, there are many method on pulling color for seps , that I learnt from trail and error and I'm GREAT with simulated process dealing with flesh tones, that most companies stay away from

Hi, I'm still using CS3 and thre is no "divide lens" as an option. Is there another one I can use in place of it? Thanks!
I tried googling for it but I unfortunately couldn't find anything. I believe Photoshop CC would be your best option. For $10 a month you get the latest full copy of photoshop. (Adobe Inc., I'll be waiting for my check in the mail.)
@@Pico_de_Guile Thank you for looking into it!
Hi Marc, I actually have a video on my channel which shows how to do the HSB splitting part without the divide blend mode, I think I show how to do it as far back as Photoshop version 7. I will have to look at it to find which video and at what time in the video it explains how to do that step, I'll get back to you.
Amazing..
Can you email this to me...i have a color sep group in fb
After the color separation and before printing the positives, I need to convert each image into halftones, right?
I'm asking the same question!
Yes. You do that by going to Image>Mode>Bitmap and selecting Halftone screen in the drop down menu. You'll want to set the resolution to at least 800ppi but ideally set it to your printer's highest output. From there you can put in the halftone frequency and shape etc.
Where i can see how to combine all those channels in one document and make it look exactly the same as in RGB on beginning?
There's another video tutorial that does this same exact method all in the same document. I don't recall what the video was titled but the video thumbnail shows a graphic of a zombie.
Hello Manojlo , I've been putting up new videos which show these kind of methods and how you can combine back into an original image with all the color controls so it looks the same but you can make adjustments directly to the colors... fun stuff and just sharing that there I'm finally putting up new videos after all these years. I may have been the original author of this video above, but Pico gets credit for keeping a copy of it and saving and posting it after I had gone off youtube many years ago, so I thank him for keeping this particular use of the techniques available. Check out my channel for more videos. :)
@@MaxChromaColor Which video on your channel shows this process??
@@bfbarker This video shows how to manually separate the 6-hues with black and white using adjustment layers such as selective color. There you can see which settings work to get the results, or you can use the 3d Lut files created in the video or make your own. I have a lot of free actions and plugins which do this stuff automatically. th-cam.com/video/vCoauVmFAfo/w-d-xo.html
You tried though you will definitely be a bad teacher because you assumed alot and don't explain your steps very well
I didn't make the video but I was able to learn from it. It's definitely not a beginner tutorial. You definitely need to be at least somewhat comfortable with the ins and outs of photoshop, which I believe is what he is assuming. This video requires a lot of pausing, rewinding and possibly a second viewing. And yes I know I would make a bad teacher but thank you for reinforcing that thought.
Thank you so much for sharing new techniques. can you send me actions? Thanks
I would love to see this on press being printed.
Skills! I need your help :) can I somehow get in contact with you? (I will of course pay what it costs)
contact me i'll color sep any file i'll do one for free to prove plasma075@yahoo.com
Just get yourself a copy of UltraSeps. Been using it for a while now and its been great.
Once you learn how to manually separate using this tutorial you can simply create an action out of it. Just have it extract red blue green yellow cyan magenta black underbase and highlight white and discard the colors you don't need. If purchasing software is what you prefer then I recommend Separation Studio. It's extremely easy to use and produces great results. It would be worth while to check out also.
How put this seps in to the channels?
Great Tutorial. Someone know how save this layers on channels ?
nataleeee95 what you can do instead of duplicating the document for all the colors, is separate the colors you need in that same document, each in their own layers then create a spot channel for each color and just simply copy and paste from the layers to the channels. But you will have to make each spot channel in its own document if you want to use color mode bitmap to create the halftones. Although you could just simply copy the half tone channels and paste them back into the original document.
yes just coping each sep file in layers and then go to channels duplicate each channel one by one
Thanks for this, I've been using color range for years, excited to try this technique.
I always hated the way color range seps looked. At least when I'd do them lol. Too much trial and error. Let me know if this helped you out. I didn't tell my ego that this isn't my video and it needs to be fed with praise.
Thanks for the reply, I was pretty happy with the result but ended up using both methods for the image, tried pulling all the color with the hue saturation method but when I got the job on press it was missing some value in the flesh tone range. Would love to hear your thoughts and critic. I can email you the seps if you're interested.
Chris Bates flesh tones are still a nightmare for me. We fortunately (or unfortunately because of lack of experience) don't get much jobs that have photo realistic people in the layouts. If we do, we just do cmyk process seps. It kills me because he mentions that he was going to make another video on flesh tones. I don't know if was ever made.
Hey guys, I just wanted you to get an update that I've been putting out new videos, and some of them are showing color-range and a new HCWB Color Range Action and How-To instructions that is another way to try pulling colors out of an image. Color Range is still great and fast and easy in many situations, it has features that work differently, but indeed sometimes it is pulling too much of what you don't want and not enough of what you do want... So I'm sharing new stuff after many years building up my methods and actions, and I'm glad you found this video useful, check out my channel if you want to see more videos digging into it all, and there are links if you want the actions but my videos show how to make them or the behind-the-scenes of how it works as well.
yeah this is pretty much the tone of the film
Do you share your actions, or sell them I am learning the separation process and I read about actions.
Neither. In the video, he mentions that he recorded the separation process into actions but he shows you how to do separations step by step. This video teaches you how to manually do a simulated process color separation. Once you get how to do it then you yourself could make an action out of it if you'd like. Creating an action is simple and I'm sure you can quickly find a video on youtube on how to do them. There's nothing to it.
Hi Joey, also greetings again Pico, and I apologize for commenting on these replies, but I just wanted to share that I've got new videos going up regularly on my channel now, and links to my actions as well... but similar to this video above I am showing how to make the various tools and actions, so you can learn and find many other uses for your own work as well.
thank you very much, for sharing. 👍👍👍👍👍
No problem. I hope it helps you out. It's a bit complicating at first but learning this technique is so worth it.
Who else wants popcorn?
What the actual fuck? LoL
What the actual fuck? LoL
This is edited to make it seem faster. Not really the original trailer
but did he murder the woman that he raped I don't think he did but maybe
there is rape in the world that the movie establishes, but the movie doesn't ever throw it in your face. don't get me wrong i loved this movie and it would be less underrated if them reviewers just pulled their heads out of their asses.
there was no rape
Wasteland *cough cough*
rated R for fucking rape, man
sooooo i guess i wont be watching this on netflix next
The trailer makes no sense. Glad I know what it's about, otherwise....
in the 70s the people know how make a move looks good
....It's nothing like Clockwork Orange.
@ratchetfp Oh yes, and the special effects are nowhere near as good as Transformers 2! :D laffo
@everybodyhatesEJ Never heard anything as a ripoff from Fallout before, the entire Wasteland genre was inspired by this film and its original novels. Fallout was also inspired by this film.
Are you using a Popeye sound track with this trailer? lol
Allright Fallout Like =D
I love the short story this movie is based on, and I like this movie a lot too. But what the hell is this trailer? It looks like somebody saw the "Clockwork Orange" trailer and said "Hey, I can do this faster and even more incoherently!"
completely ripped off A Clockwork Orange
thats the most epileptic trailer i've ever seen.
@everybodyhatesEJ Fallout didn't "rip" it. It referenced it. Fallout was an homage to so many films, and at the time of its publication this was obvious. Now, unfortunately, it isn't held in the same cultural context; it's been, what, 15 years since the first game? Most people today hear "Fallout" and think Fallout 3.
@everybodyhatesEJ Fallout copied many movies and books, but the games are still fudging awesome!
this trailer reminds me of the trailer for a clockwork orange
Yeah, I loved the bit in Mad Max with all the Mutants and Soldiers in Power Armour, and the high speed car chases and battles in Fallout 3....
