Guitar Tutorial: HOW TO PRACTICE BENDING with “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)”
Hey everyone. I hope you all enjoy this basic lesson on bending and the first lick from the Voodoo Child solo.
In the future, I will likely remake this video with better quality and detail, but I have had quite a few comments requesting this tutorial so I wanted to get something on the channel pronto. Have a great rest of the weekend!

C HYBRID PENTATONIC BLUES PRACTICE
มุมมอง 9833 หลายเดือนก่อน
Jamming out over this cool backing track in the key of C; I’m playin through my usual setup of my 60’s reissue Strat through my solid state Fender Twin. “Hybrid pentatonic scale” is a term that I personally find what players seem to mean when they say the “blues scale”. What they usually are trying to achieve is to mix the major and minor tonalities in the same key center. #blues #guitar

Great lesson
thank you man, I enjoy your videos and you're a great teacher. trying to get better at lead guitar
@@edgytryhard play on my friend
Thank you very much, this lesson was much needed 🎉
I like the way you play the intro lick with a light swing. It's subtle but its noticeable, like the already slow and laid back track is struggling to catch you - very cool
Tone is great! Gotta work on the phrasing and timing. make sure you really listen to the solo and how he is choosing the notes OVER the chord changes, especially over the first motif.
@@Andy-rp5up thanks. My right hand and sense of timing are the chinks in my armor for sure. This solo sounds so easy but in reality is so hard
😩
Beautiful. What’s your effects and amps to get that nice tone?
Fender strat, tube screamer, J rockett ‘Lenny’ booster, EQD plumes into a fender twin.
Lovely Mate 🎉
Clean 🔥🔥🔥
Great work, Matthew. Many thanks.
another quality one from you bro, nice control of the bends and overall playing I wish it was longer tho lol
Thanks my friend. I’m currently on a new video to commemorate passing 300 subs recently, and if this video does well enough I’ll release a full version/cover and possibly a lesson. It is an amazing tune that’s simple but filled with so many great ideas.
@@matthewtaylor808 absolutely 💯, really can’t wait to see it happen I’d love it if you do a tutorial on controlled bends and vibrato
@@StallionMan-pv5clwill do!
The control, the mixing of major and minor pentatonic, just majestic 🎉

I’m glad I found this channel, great video and please what’s the crunchy tone you’re using
@@StallionMan-pv5cl I’ll make a video on tone next. Thank you so much for watching
@@matthewtaylor808you got clean vibrato too, I’m trying to improve mine in the mean time
@@StallionMan-pv5clit’s a very important part of playing that a lot of people don’t talk about, especially in rock and blues!
@@matthewtaylor808absolutely, it’s what makes or mars one’s playing
@@matthewtaylor808I noticed you didn’t add links to your IG or TikTok Please I’d like you to do a rendition of red house by Jimmy Hendrix 🙏🏻
great licks but your tone needs to be adjusted
@@dwightpatterson9477 why
I actually came to comment that the tone is awesome. Has some thickness to it, imo. Wdym by adjusted?
Thanks for the upload. Do you know any Peter Green?
For a BB sound - use the bridge pickup. Turn the guitar down a bit so we can hear your voice better. Think about editing this a bit, remove the fluff and get right to the point. Overall, nice work and Strat tone is very nice.
Thanks for the tips. I’m still really new to making videos, so I’ll keep all that advice in mind
@@matthewtaylor808 You are doing great! Keep it up!
The first 4:45…dullsville
@@harrylevin2582 do you really think so? Why?
@@matthewtaylor808 bit of a windup, want to hear you play!
Just something from the viewers perspective: You know what you are breaking down but I do not? I would demonstrate the lick in todo first so the student has the context.
What is Todo
I'm pretty sure he demonstrated each lick prior to teaching it. Did I miss something?
Please keep it slow for the newbie’s & senior citizens
Cool video keep going
Very nice presentation. You sound great! Keep 'em coming!
Great video!!! please make more, and thank you for going slow for us noobs lol!!
Great video! Keep at it!
Bro is it important to learn the names on the fretboard?
@@KJuniorMuzik yes, very. It’s the easiest way to communicate with other musicians, no matter what level. I say this because there’s only 12 notes. It makes things way easier, trust me. Start small, and just learn the notes on each string first , 1 by 1
@@matthewtaylor808thank you very much for the quick response. I have been playing guitar for a long time about a decade now but I realize I’m not progressing I still struggle to solo, play bar chord and use the pick can you advise me on how to improve I don’t really have a direction and a study plan.
@@KJuniorMuziki can help with that; If you have instagram or Facebook, you should message me! I also teach private virtual lessons at intermediate and beginner levels. Instagram: matty_taylor_ Facebook: Matthew Taylor
@@matthewtaylor808 then what’s next
After learning the notes of each string what is next
Thanks brodie. Love a nice loud amp especially in a place where u can get a natural reverb. I wanna hear my fingers on the strings and every microtone to a tee I’ve always wondered how u do that pull off technique in the beginning kinda sounds like BB ?
I think you’re referring to the bend? It’s a raked 1 & 1/2 step bend (or 1 & 1/2 “tone” if you’re in the UK/Europe) on the high E string. I will make a video on that soon
@@matthewtaylor808 its not really the bend I’m talking about it’s that triplet thing u do in the beginning?
@@trisopie I gotcha. I think my next video will be 3 BB King licks every blues player should know.

been playing for 20+ years. and i have to say- bitchin!
@@antileet-Services glad you enjoyed.
Slightly unrelated, but kind of reminds me of some instrumentals from some of Sam Cooke’s songs
@@DanF5264 Sam Cooke’s guitarist absolutely used this technique as well. It is deeply rooted in that R&B / Gospel / major-blues style of guitar.
Great time, maybe he’s got a click or the track in that right ear but I don’t think so
@@scottklandl488 I don’t, but that’s a great idea. I think I was a little off going from the I to the IV chord after the intro, but thank you my friend
bro got the SRV tone
Thank you, a gem of a lesson! Making sense now.
@@mickymiller6130 no problem! Glad you enjoyed. Again, I play mostly by ear and only had 2 years of formal lessons under a classical guitar teacher , so my theory knowledge and reading etc is pretty limited.
@@matthewtaylor808 Not to worry, I subscribed. Learning modes can be challenging.
🔥
Hey! Nice tutorial, need to rewatch it a couple times to get it, but I think I have got the idea. What song did you briefly play in this video as an example of playing the same shape but emphasizing different notes? For like a couple of seconds it was played.
The Thrill is Gone- BB King!
@@matthewtaylor808thanks! Need to to learn how to play it the way you do

@@EulerAngles922 cheers my friend!
@@matthewtaylor808 This is one of the best guitar lessons i’ve come across. Please do Texas Flood next… or maybe Little Wing?
@@EulerAngles922 I love both of those songs. I will absolutely do those soon.
fuck yes make it wail 🤘🏼🔥
nice is this like playing the 6th mode relative to that chord?
@@lumpehd9728 not mode, just relative minor.
yeah but playing pattern 6 on g major scale give you pattern starting on E whitch is pattern 1 in Em?@@matthewtaylor808
@@matthewtaylor808 Well, minor is a mode and the 6th of a major scale is indeed a minor scale, so he's correct. Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian (6th), Locrian
@@EulerAngles922 touché!
Yes, when you know theory.
thi is really good, thank you!!
Great lesson. 👌
