I thought George strait was the original version of that song and I found out that it was Terry Stafford the original from Lubbock, Texas back in the 60s.

Memories indeed. The last time I was in Rivers was visiting my grandmother in 1986. Some of the buildings were sold and carried by flat beds to new locations. I saw it happening. I remember visiting the base a couple of times. My father was an aircraft mechanic in the CAF and met my mother in Rivers. He always said its closing was political because the runway was long enough to accommodate the aircraft at the time. Maybe you also heard about the parachute training tower where a parachute once failed on an officer who was quite mean. My grandfather helped build the bridge you videoed. I think I also recognized the river of the old pump house which my grandfather also worked, way before my time, and I fished on its old dam when visiting Grandma. My mother taught piano and played organ. In 1969 my father was transferred to Germany where I was born. Did you know the Barkley's in Rivers?

I was born in Brandon in 1958 and lived in the Rivers PMQs as a baby. My father was Army and attached to the Air Supply School as a Parachute Instructor. As a teenager I spent 6.5 weeks (1975) at the former base on my Air Cadet Gliding Scholarship.

This song has its roots in Cuba. The girl from Guantanamo. I heard it played by a local band in Castries with the trades blowing the women’s dresses about while they were dancing. Fond memories.
