According to NASCAR, the white line is purely for aesthetics. It is not functional. According to them, the actual finish is not even determined by the transponder that in installed in the exact same location on every car and checked by laser pinpoint just like everything else on the cars by AI computer technology every time they roll through tech along with every time cars are taken back to the R&D center. Even though, I might add, the transponder not only is what led to showing the 17 winning, but is also used to show lap leaders every lap. According to NASCAR, the finish is determined invisible to the naked eye, by a high resolution camera that takes a massive 3k plus, (I don't remember the specific number now) frames per minute. How they determine the .001 winning differential, I have no idea, but it's awfully coincidental that just before NASCAR flipped the finish, the SMT data, using the transponders, showed the 17 car beat the 5 car by .001. How the front of the 5 was quick enough to beat the 17, but the back wasn't, is a mystery to this ol race car mechanic!
