Randy Newman wrote this over 50 years ago, during the height of the Cold War, with Viet Nam also still raging. It blessedly came to seem somewhat less relevant in the following decades, but now things are crazier than ever, both here and internationally, and it seems suddenly relevant again. Well, if you can't join 'em, may as well laugh at 'em...

A Tom Petty tune I was never that crazy about, but I recently heard Blackberry Smoke do an all acoustic version that I thought was flat out fantastic. So this is my attempt to emulate their version of it., with a little bit of electric lead guitar.

I usually do pretty minimalist stuff, no more than 2 or 3 tracks generally. But I went all Phil Spector on my ass with this one - I think it took 10 tracks for all of the guitars and vocals (including a couple of small repairs). And this one's not obscure - it's from the hit parade back in 79 or so. Around the first time I saw Tom and the HBs.

My slower version of the Dead classic. I don't play it at all like the original, primarily because I simply can't...

A little bit of gospel from a non-observant Jew, inspired by Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, often referred to as a religion without beliefs. I'm down with that. Always heard this as a civil rights song anyway...
Great tone on the strat
Nice song, is it an original?
@@casciottisongs it was to Tom Petty circa 1980 or 81. I don’t write, and if I did, I’d never come up with something that good! But I’m glad you liked it…
Wonderful. Love your guitar its awesome
Thanks a lot Tom. Glad you enjoyed it!
Very cool. Loved the electric interlude and chorus. You are getting sophisticated!
Very cool
Ray, I really like your take on this. It's pretty similar to mine, although I haven't played it in a while (too many songs, lol). I particularly like your bluesy lead playing, man. Anyway, really nice job on this classic. Best wishes--Tim.
Thanks for the listen Tim. I went back and checked yours out again - I think you come closer to the Dead's sort of bouncy rhythm, at least in the intro portion of the song. I've just never been able to play that at all, so I stopped trying and I guess turned it into more of a slow blues or folk song. But this song for me has always been a great vehicle for playing some electro lead over the top, sort of like pretzel are primarily a carrying vehicle for salt. I just love playing lead guitar with this progression. My wife has a cousin who's 19 or 20 I think. Her parents were Deadheads, met at a Dead show, and named her Althea and she can play this song perfectly - acoustic or electric.. The kid blows my mind.
My pleasure, Ray. It was cool. Gosh, I almost never go back and listen to my own videos. I hope it wasn't too embarrassing. I don't really remember what I did. I never try to play a tune like the original, and I really like people who do their own thing with cover tunes. I think Jerry would be the same, if I had to guess. That's a great story about your wife's cousin. She sounds phenomenally talented to be able to do that!
Cool ta mélodie, merci ;-)
Great work guitar sounds stellar nice job
Sounds really good.
Sounds great Ray. Guitar sounds really big if thst makes sense.
Thanks Tom. A touch of reverb and delay in the recording helps with that...
Nice
Ray, I love it, man. Your electric playing was especially sweet, and that is a beautiful strat. My son would be jealous. It's such a killer tune as well. Thank you for sharing this--Tim.
Hey thanks Tim. I had mixed feelings about doing this again because I like my first (non-video) version of it more. I still do, partly because I nail the solo in a way I don't here. And also, I think because I augment the acoustic rhythm with an electric counter-rhythm that I think propels it a bit more. But I'm OK with this one too. The first one is also on youtube, but without any video, here: studio.th-cam.com/users/videoLxacD1X3jnY/edit...

Are you touring? When is the concert? Flora wants vip tickets!
Nicely done
Really cool song..
I love you Brother...the memories, the music and the Thai Stick... See you in Glory.
Une belle voix joliment accompagnée à la guitare ! Bravo 👍
A nice rich tone on that guitar. I would expect nothing less from a Martin of course! Quite a good song!
Very nice, my friend. One of my favorite songs! It sounds good and looks good.
I posted an audio only version of this pretty recently, so I'm not inclined to share this on the forum, but I'm really digging this new mic / video system I got. I saw you say something about thinking about upgrading your recording setup. I can recommend the Audigo mic system. I initially bought two of them, and used two on the "Sibella" video I posted not long ago. But I had some weird interference problems using the two mics together, so I've just been using one and liking it fine - way better than the iPhone mic, so I'll probably return the second one. It's s surprisingly good mic, great audio / video synchronization (automatic, no thought required!), and it's got a rudimentary multi-tracking capability - hence the second guitar and vocal tracks through most of this video. Thpe multi-tracking isn't terribly flexible, but it works. Anyway Tim, thanks for having a listen. I recently put up a version of Black Throated wind that's basically just one acoustic guitar / vocal track plus an electric guitar lead section partway through.
I only post certain tunes on the forum as well, so I understand that. I am leaning toward a decent mic (like a Shure SM57) and an inexpensive digital interface. All I have now is my Android phone and a cheap USB mic, which was kind of a waste of $30 or whatever it was. I really dug your take on BT WInd and commend you for digging deeply into a lot of great old tunes.
@@timtsh You gonna stop doing video, or are you gonna try to find a way to stitch audio and video together somehow?
I am going to try to do video with audio, but it's going to be awhile before I can do much. I think it's better to let people see you performing. My son says that I can record myself on my phone while also recording audio through an interface with a good mic, and these can be synched up with a simple video editing program. It sounds logical anyway, lol.
that sound.....is it, that's the sound.......nice
Well, it's A sound, I don't know if it's THE sound. Kind of a sound I've always gravitated to, except waaaaay back when I was playing with a lot of distortion and fuzz and stuff...
Real nice! Thx. (I just wish you had let that final chord hang out for a few more seconds.)
Are you related to her? Did she have a good experience at WCU? I have a teenage pianist looking at colleges. Thanks
Sorry for the late response - just saw this. Yeah, she's my daughter. She attended the University of Cincinnati conservancy for her first year, and then came home for the next three - we live in West Chester. She really liked West Chester and liked the music program, but she started realizing she was a good pianist, but not a GREAT one, and wasn't gonna be able to do it professionally in any way she'd want to. So she started branching out and moving beyond music while at WCU. Now she's a Mom herself and working in a field that couldn't have less to do with music. Best laid plans and all that!
Thank you!
Nice picking, Ray.
What amp did you use
It's a Roland Blues Cube Hot - the Marshall voiced version that they only sell through Guitar Center and Musician's Friend (and their various corporate associates). Perfect amp for mostly home player. Gets plenty loud but sounds really good at man-cave volumes...
