Practice simple quarter and tied eighth-note rhythms with "Carnivalito" from Shenanigans! Each time you finish practicing a rhythm section, celebrate with a mini dance party :)
Teachers: On day one of this activity, I just have students practice clapping the rhythm, while walking around the room to the beat. For each dance section, they freeze and dance in their spot! On day two, I split students up into three groups and assign them to an instrument station (e.g. triangles, shakers, tambourines) and they play the rhythm with whatever instrument is at their station. Students can then transition between the three stations during each "dance" section. This is a great activity to asses students' rhythm reading, listening, and performance skills!
