New Ceramic Animals, Art Print Unboxing, Fall 2024 Recap - Small Business Ceramics Studio Vlog #19
New Ceramic Animals, Art Print Unboxing, Fall 2024 Recap - Small Business Ceramics Studio Vlog #19
Hello, friends! Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and are looking forward to (hopefully!) a great New Year! It's been waaaaay too long and this vlog is a recap of some of the things I've done in mid- to late Fall 2024. Art wise, I made a new batch of little ceramic animals, tested a new clear glaze and tried a different type of kiln firing. Watch the video all the way through to check out the results and let me know what you think about Cone 5 Reduction firing in the kiln, vs. Cone 10 Oxidation in all of my previous videos. Personally, I think I like Cone 10 Oxidation and all the vibrant colors!
Cheers,
Heather

    If you break or cut your firm clay into small chunks, spray or quickly dunk each piece with clean water, seal tightly in a bag after removing as much air as possible.... And then in a day or so, come back and wedge it - it should be much easier to use. 😘

      @mortiferburzum2451 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm struggling to get animals and proportions right atm so would be great to watch more instructional vids or your process step by step ...I love animals with huge eyes or ears or both😂 and can only suggest a fennec fox?😍 or a long eared jerboa or a sugar glider, maybe an aye-aye? ( there's beauty in anything ugly😂). Plus ears of my animals are either badly placed or keep breaking and seeing someone else tackling big ears would be helpful. Also, thank you for reminding me to use my hoarded art supplies!😅

    • @heatherliu
      @heatherliu 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I'll definitely make more sculpting vids in the future! A fennec fox is an adorable idea! It is tricky making animals with huge ears and long legs and tails though. Since I have to take my animals to a communal studio, the chances of them getting damaged are a bit higher. Not because the staff are careless, but accidents happen. If you have your own kiln, then the chances of breakage is much less because you would be the sole person handling them. I try to make sure my ears aren't too thin (especially where it connects to the animal's head) because that just makes it more likely that they break.

    • @heatherliu
      @heatherliu ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! As a precaution, I wouldn't go thicker than an inch. It also depends on whether or not you let it fully dry before it gets put in the kiln. Most of the time since I let my pieces get bone dry and there's no moisture, there's no need to hollow them out.

    Beautiful video! I have such good memories of this area. I lived here for 30 years and I’ve spent countless hours photographing many seasons of wildflowers around the Santa Barbara front and back country. I have great memories of hiking with my mom around Figueroa Mountain. She recently passed away and seeing these scenes brought back those memories. I loved seeing the lupine and poppies and the gorgeous pink Shooting Stars. It’s great to see the streams running again. I loved seeing you create your lovely pastel painting en Plein air. It looks so peaceful. I don’t live there anymore- lost our home in the 2018 flash flood and debris flow after the Thomas Fire.

It really is the little things in life that we should all appreciate and I'm glad that you and your mom made those memories in such a beautiful setting. I'm sorry to hear about your home. Thank you! I go to a communal studio and pay a small fee for them to fire my pieces. They are not small-scale studio kilns, they are VERY large, industrial-size kilns. So unfortunately, they would be too large and too expensive (and unnecessary) for any independent ceramicist.

      Thanks! Yeah, the day job's necessary for now, but it can be a drag...
