Why did the Amtrak train have two locomotives up front instead of one at each end in a push-pull config? Seems like it would be way easier when you turn the train around at the end.

Here in Australia, train spotting and plane spotting is encouraged. My local airport, which is a major airport, even has a guide on their website as to where to go to get the best pics, tells you to have a radio you can listen to ATC on, and even encourages the use of ladders to shoot over the fence (but you can’t rest the ladder on the fence, I believe).

The Americans love their horns. Here in Australia you get one, maybe two blows before the train crosses the crossing. Also, the crossing bells stop the second the gates start to lift, not after they’ve finished lifting.



I always wondered who the guy was that set up the cameras at both sides of the crossing and caught the accident on camera.

If you are a railfan that likes to watch, photo or video trains please do so from public property. Do not tresspass onto railroad property with out authorization additionally, be safe at all times. Keep in mind photography or video of trains is not illegal. In fact it's Constitutionally protected. Should a Deputy and Police Officer or Railroad Special Agent approach you if they ask if your OK and are say so. Keep in mind they are sworn law enforcement. Should they go further and demand ID with out stating probable cause or if they say suspicion decline ID. Suspicion is not a crime. Ask if you are breaking any law if the response is negative you are breaking no law. Keep in mind you are not obliged to help them investigate. Be respectful toward them at all times. However don't engage in friendly small talk, they are not your friends. A lot of LEO do not respect individual rights. Safe railfanning!

(i know both crossings, one is quad Siemens gate and then the other is a WCH gate with WRRS brackets, LEDS! {have not figured out the bell names yet} and then more down the UP line is a cantilever setup with a mech bell (my favorites) and UP is my favorite frieght company soooo yeah,, also Amtrak Cali is more common than Amtrak itself so keep that in mind) hi

I saw 279 on July 1st recently, 8090 was leading but in a 2x1 consist with a Tier 4. Greetings from Tennessee.

These non railroader people that call cops on the train watchers, or those sitting in scenic quiet areas "too long" generally will not call on gangsters or intimidating people doing really bad stuff or criminal activity, that is what is baffling. I guess they are afraid of retaliation from the latter. Watch out for Neighborhood Watch types too, they are not as good as they want to appear. Nothing but a bunch of people wanting to flex their muscles, making their neighborhoods uninviting to anyone good just walking through or not a resident of said neighborhood, but doesn't do anything to deter the real problems of real crime.
