Drake Maye First NFL Start - NFL All-22 Breakdown

Drake Maye made his first start against the vaunted Houston Texans defense, and his terrible offensive line did him no favors. Nor did his terrible wide receivers. Or his extremely conservative, outdated offensive coordinator. Despite a shaky, skittish start, Maye ended up playing a very good game after getting an early interception out of his system. I like most of these bets. Although I think the Jets are gonna win tonight. The Jets smoked the Texans last year with Zach Wilson and I think Cj stroud is kinda overrated. Also the Texans are missing key players.

If we are talking honest the chargers don’t have and no one has claimed the offensive line was “elite”. Their tackle play this season has been elite, the interior line has been where the pressure has come. I feel like you have already based your whole picture of what the offense is with a false narrative. This is the first year of a new system with these coaching and team getting to know the process.
Any time we can continue to cause you more stressful hair loss (we Commanders fans) feel free to continue to hate on us, buddy. [Two hard slaps on your back]
I've never seen someone try so hard to act like a man Not working
He never went anywhere. The run is falling off a bit now we gotta lean on Just 10...
Like the new intro with the lovely lady introducing us to the video
I think the video did an overall good job of illustrating the opening statements, but I think maybe it could've elaborated more some points to be more friendly to casual fans. Why is this bad play design, what is good play design, you mentioned bad spacing, but I'm not sure you pointed it out in the tape and illustrated why it matters. And I know doing so would be a lot more work too.
Good dissection of a subpar passing offense. Likely correct in that the offensive play calling and talent pool definitely isn't the best. However, it's nice to see Chargers going back to a default run-first mode. Defense and good running game is a good base for a championship/deep playoff run. It was initially refreshing, but I got sick of watching Norv Turner and Staley managing mentally and physically weak teams trying to out smart or out strategize the other team, playing flag football - which on it's own can only get you so far. The beginning of the Chargers success around 2005 started with great defense and ground game. Jim is slowly building the base/fundamentals of the team - I suspect next year - Roman will get ousted or will get help from a second big name offensive coordinator - McConkey will mature and they'll grabs some WRs in the draft and FA - DJ Chark needs to get on the field - I think in some ways it's good we got rid of Allen and Williams last year - look at how they're doing now - even with Williams having another elite QB who roasted him publicly. Hypothesis about those "bad" play calls - maybe they're holding back the good stuff until the playoffs, or using those plays to set up the run or something else. I think I saw the Saints play a lot of zone - maybe a strategy for attacking the zone is overloading one side of the zone - also if someone catches the ball - could be a lot of blockers around to get some YAC or for someone to break free and score. Their priorities seems to be establishing a solid run game and then spreading them out - going left side to right side - eventually some vertical routes will open up. The funkiest thing I notice about greg roman's offense is the way he pulls tackles on the run game - it's really odd and unconventional.
Some people just need to get off the internet.
Dude stop. U suck at this. Please retire. Pick another hobby 😂
I dont think it's fair to say Justin Herbert is carrying the Chargers. That was true in all previous seasons but we have a pretty d×mn good defense now amd they've held up their end in every game this year for the most part. Most you can say is he's carrying the offense.
Man its ok to say that you were wrong
I will when I am
Fehoko actually got his second foot down on that end zone throw. There was an angle where you could see pellets pop up from the turf. Crazy throw.
That would be TD in the corner of the end zone by simi Fehoko was indeed a TD that the refs got wrong
yeah i was never sold on harbaugh and definitely not roman. i totally agree i don't think harbaugh is gonna be terrible but like what's the point. it's totally behind the curve. and i sometimes wonder if herbert is too coachable and that lombardi really hurt his progression. (in terms of playmaking instinct down to down)
Well said, man
What an idiot
got yourself a sub! great work!
Thanks for watching!
As much as i dislike Roman, i prefer him to joe lets throw for 3 yards lombardi.

And STILL playing mediocre at best football

@@pbfg if his name was Drake Maye you’d be raving lol your bias is nasty. Can’t take you serious
And to think all they had to do was promote Shane Steichen to HC after Herbert's rookie season and all tears rendered during the Staley tenure could have offset dangerous rip currents north of Blackies for a day...easily
89-Jalen Reagor. Making up for his fumble last week after a good catch (typical Reagor.. why he went from 1st round to practice squad back-up). Chargers curse--injuries. Q is out with ankle. Chark went out in pre-season and then re-injured. Davis is out. TE Hayden Hurst is out. Rice is having a hard time, not being able to get open and didn't learn the plays (Herbert has yelled at him a couple of times for lining up wrong...). Palmer is Palmer. Why they need to get Tee Higgins or at least Mike Williams back from Jets. With Higgins, Q, and Ladd as 1,2,3 with Chark, Palmer as 4 and 5, and Davis as their returner/trick play guy (runs 23.47mph-but Roman rarely has him go deep) and Hurst back they would be good, especially with their defense in Top 5. Roman has to design plays that the back-ups are familiar with--this is part of the problem, KISS (as evidenced by Rice...).
Good work.
Football requires toughness. Tough teams win. Tomlin hasn’t had a losing team ever… toughness!!! I’m not sold on the Roman offense but I’m ready to see it develop over the next couple seasons when we get more receivers. Keep up with the herbivore videos!
This is the first video I’ve seen from your channel, and I’m also avid football fan and a chargers fan. I will say I disagree with a lot of your sentiments about this chargers team. I think you let your bias show very clearly with your disdain for how the chargers are rebuilding (not trying to hate). I think it would help your channel if you expanded your knowledge of different systems of offense and ways to build a team (just trying to be constructive) To get started, I disagree with your take that Roman is a horrible OC. Roman is probably top 3 in the league at creating a run game. That alone makes him at least a decent OC. Yes his passing concepts are simple, but they are fundamentally sound and are ment to play off of a loaded box that the defense will do to stop the run. I don’t by any means think he is some steal of a coordinator, but saying he shouldn’t be an NFL coach is just an uneducated take in my opinion. He has done some good things for this offense like forcing teams to respect the run, which makes Herbert’s job easier when it comes to decision making. The other thing I disagree with about this chargers team, is when people either say that the chargers have a terrible receiver group, or that they need to go and get a #1 guy. The receiver group has really good foundational players and is only missing 2 main role guys in the passing game. Ladd is definitely a #1 caliber receiver. He is quickly progressing in the mold of Kupp, and can be a similar caliber player, or maybe even better because he is a bit faster than Kupp. QJ has shown that he is a competent receiver at 2 things this season. He is good and getting yards after catch, and he has shown he is a capable deep threat. The current TE group is full of guys who are good at run blocking, chipping, leaking out, and finding the open space underneath. All the chargers need to fill out a really good receiving core is a jump ball receiver, probably someone like Mike Williams, but younger, not injury prone, and way cheaper than way his contract was; and a TE with a very large catch radius; IE a Kelce or Mark Andrews mold of player. If they fill those 2 needs, this chargers passing game will be elitely dangerous, and that will feed back into Roman’s run game. Anyways, I hope you found some of this either helpful or thought provoking, and good luck with your channel.
you know ... that jayden daniels kid is looking pretty good ...
I don't think any other film analyst has broken down so precisely what I and many other chargers fans see on a weekly basis. Sometimes I feel like I'm going crazy with some of the discourse surrounding how Herbert needs to do more, but, no, really, the offenses he's been put in consistently require elite play from him to generate 5 yards. Like I truly believe this guy has been put in some spectacularly atrocious offensive situations most of his career (basically outside 2021 and even then the playcalling was bad), and fans of other teams think it's cope when things have really been this bad. Maybe I'm the crazy one, but it really feels like a situation where "muh no separation" "muh egregiously bad offensive play design" are cope and excuses when it comes from like 28-29 other fan bases, but the "excuses" are actually accurate and true for Herbert.
Plz do more herbie videos!
Injuries the last 3 years have gotten in his way and I also don’t have faith that Harbaugh and Hortiz will actually give him legit weapons at WR and TE they gotta wake up and realize who they have at QB this is not Michigan with getting to play soft teams with stacked teams + recruiting the best players or that stacked SF roster 12 years ago Harbaugh needs to get with the times
I really don't know why you bash Harbaugh and Hortiz, all Hortiz did was nailing the draft and free agency, were in the middle of a rebuild and so far our 1st 2nd and two 5th round rookies are playing out of their mind good football. Moulden, Tart and Fulton are very good pickups..... this takes time and people are way too impatient .....
Preach!
I’m so happy that Herbert’s back man he’s been disrespected and under appreciated for so long he’s always been a Tier 1 elite QB for me and if he gets more help he can be the best QB in the league for sure going forward he has the perfect mix of mental and physical traits+ now he’s starting to extend plays and improvise Iike he did his rookie year and 2021 again look out
89 was Jalen Reagor of all people. Might be the one highlight from his career so far.
Also I really wonder by Brenden Rice cant get some reps considering how bad their WR corps is. Thought he was alright.
I’m surprised that he hasn’t been seeing the field, but remember to NEVER base an evaluation on whether a player starts or not. Coaches prove just how terrible they are at evaluating talent all the time.
@@jackm05006 Rice couldn't even get lined up right and has hurt themnin just limited snaps.
@@pbfg and the ravens organization has proven to completely inept in the WR department and joe hortiz is just continuing the trend
Honestly Roman is the one decision I've always side-eyed with this new coaching staff, Teddy Ruxpin has gots to go lol. I think Harbaugh will be fine with a better OC, one who can play chess lol! We need better guards, because those mofos cannot pick up stunts to save their lives, a real center (though much respect to Bozeman for defending Justin), and real weapons on offense. I do like the 2024 rookie class, I think Hortiz has also done a lot with the roster considering how many holes the team had and still has (thanks Telesco). I also love Jesse Minter and Ryan Ficken. Still a lot of work to be done.
If they just got 2 average interior o lineman, 1 good receiver and a good OC, they’d be in business. Their defense is number 1 in the nfl right now.
My issue with Harbaugh is that literally any HC can be good with a good OC. So. Why not just… promote the OC? Because otherwise the good OCs will always leave every year or two.
@@pbfg True, you could say that with the Ben Johnson and The Lions too.
@@abriaangel9986 There’s reason to believe Ben Johnson has little to no interest in becoming a head coach. He’s probably not going anywhere anytime soon
@@sprawlz6466Disagree I think he leaves after this year.
Herbert continues to play like the best qb in the nfl year after year despite horrendous support. The only time he’s ever had an OC that wasn’t the worst play caller in the league was as a rookie, when he had to deal with the worst pass pro unit in football and no run game. Since then, the run game has still never improved, and the pass pro has continued to be bottom 5 in the league every year outside of 2021. I thought it would be impossible for LA to downgrade from Lombardi at OC because he was the worst in the league, but they managed to do it with Roman. I just thought no nfl team would ever be dumb enough to allow Roman to be a play caller ever again. Herbert has the worst OC and pass catchers in the league, no run game, and one of the worst interior o line’s in the league. People continuing to slander him are simply idiots who don’t watch games or who are fanboys of rival qbs like burrow tua lamar or Mahomes. The things Herbert has been able to do in his career despite being in a bottom 5 situation every year is truly remarkable.
Damn dude that’s a dark outlook
He never left… just had a bum ankle … we desperately need a #1 wr tho
Jalen raeger literally couldn’t even be a WR 5 on any other nfl team and he’s WR 1. Fehoko was a practice squad player on other teams and is now their WR 2. Will dissly was a TE 3 on Seattle and is LA’s 2nd leading receiver. It’s unreal how bad this pass catching unit is.
@ yup reagor was on the street I’m pretty sure… I don’t mind Fehoko … but he came in as our wr 6 … Brenden Rice must not be very good if he can’t get in with this lineup
McConkey is pretty nice, I’d build around him and see where it goes
I even have a hard time imagining the impact a #1 wr could have in this team. That's why I'm more worried about Dissly being TE#1. I'm more concerned about getting anyone good enough to remove Eric Tomlinson from the 53 roster. He doesn't even need to be good, it would be great if he was faster than Dissly, but I'll settle for him being TE #2 so Smart can be TE #3.
@ almost like we should’ve kept Gerald … dude was a beast after the catch
As a Saints fan, this game was horrible to watch, the defense was just awful couldn't do anything waiting for the team to fire Allen. Good analysis.
