This channel is dedicated to revealing lost treasures in gaming, literature, and visual media like movies and comics. It is inspired by the Joubert quote, “The worst thing about new books is that they keep us from reading the old ones.” I want to give you a platform to discuss older works, explore things you may never have heard of, and engage with the greats of these genres.
Richard Tierney's The Treasure of Horemkhu
Hello Happy TH-camrs!!! I hope your day is going amazingly well!
I just finished the last couple of shorts in the Cthulhu Mythos collection called “Antartakos” What’s next? How about the Mythos collection of 12 short stories also set in this Mythos published by Chaosiam called “Scroll of Thoth” published in 1997 and written by Richard Tierney. This is my first time reading his stuff. We’ll move to the 9th short “The Treasure of Horemkhu” which is around 35 pages long. This is a more Sword and Sorcery take of the Mythos inspired by Robert E. Howard, not the cosmic horror inspired by Lovecraft. Enjoy!!!
Here’s a link to purchase it on Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/1909679860/
Have you read The Treasure of Horemkhu? Have you read anything else by Richad Tierney?? What did you think of it??? Did you agree with my video? Anything in the video or the story that you’d like to discuss? Sure; let’s chat about it!
Did you enjoy this video? Glad to hear it! Are you a person who enjoys finding these older books? Then why not hit that lil’ ol’ subscribe button and let's get your fix of reviews of older fantasy, horror, and science fiction forgotten classics? Thanks again for watching and reading!!!

I like the stories that combine sword and sorcery with hints of the Cthulhu mythos! Thank you, Abe!
You are right about serials, it seems like such a missed opportunity! E.g. what if there was a Star Wars serial and an Indiana Jones every Saturday or something (and they were actually good😂) there’s no way that wouldn’t have worked!
Awesome! Definitely have to reread this I don’t remember this one at all! Thank you for making videos Abe!
I remember visiting the US in 1989 and being in Baltimore where my sister was doing her post-doc I was shocked that Maryland PBS running fundraisers to keep their lights on and they were auctioning Dr Who serials. I feel so privileged to have been born and growing up in Britain and being encouraged and enjoying Dr Who.
Oh just wanted to say really appreciate you keep things spoiler-free, even with the older stuff!
Sure thing!!!
Never watched dr Who, is there a good place to start? Could you start watching with this serial?
The classic series is streaming on Britbox. The older 60s black and white are done fast often filmed in a day each, and there are like 48 episodes a season so ton of them. They are pretty slow to modern minds, people are running into sets, and such, like theater, but there is a warmness and charm that's lost to our age of storytelling today. Each doctor has their own interpretation of the character, many fans love the 2nd and 4th. ou could start with the previous one an Unearthly Child or this for historical context, or move to the color era of Spearhead in Space that introduces the 3rd Doctor. Many episodes from this era are missing sadly.
@@theworstthingaboutnewbooks6006thanks for the response! I’ll start with the unearthly child and then this I think, yeah isn’t it awful how many stuff gets lost?
@@konstantinos-6-6-6-8 Absolutely!
Love the new set-up Abe. Looks great. Very professional. How would you feel about splicing in still images occasionally to illustrate your commentary?
Thanks! That's my new room prior to moving things in. I could do that, and once my channel starts monetizing, that's possible.
Excellent coverage, good man!! Those early stories were great experiments and showed how hard they worked to keep Doctor Who running! Rock on!
You got it!
Wow the only serial I’ve seen was the first Flash Gordon, I guess I knew there would be more but never really thought to look up and see what else there was, will check it out and thanks for the link!
Sure thing!!!
Great review! Love that you focused on the actual rules, you’d think more people would do that when reviewing rpgs… I’ve only looked at MERP here and there, the artwork was great, I can see the issue with the rules not reflecting the world! TBH hard to imagine a Middle Earth RPG that would work, it just doesn’t quite feel like that kind of world… unless maybe it took place around Silmarillion, that age…?
Yup yup! Thanks for your thoughts!!!
This collection does sound interesting but I haven’t read much Shakespeare, always feel with that kind of concept if I don’t know the background I’ll miss too much…
I've only read one play each year in high School (Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Julius Caesar and Hamlet ) for classes and The Tempest in college for a Humanities class. I also just reread Tempest, Macbeth and read a Midsummer Night's and reviewed them here for this channel as a fantasy adn horror fan.
Love your videos Abe! I’d say it’s definitely in the Cthulhu mythos, it’s more explicit in some stories than others but definitely mythos! This was a great story indeed!
Yup.
That’s a great list! The whole time I was wondering if you would include “Hook”, that’s the one that popped in my mind straight away though I haven’t seen it in decades! I would only disagree with blade, I think it feels more like horror/action, not fantasy, but great movie! The only one I would add would be Roald Dahl’s Witches, that was a fun movie with some really creepy scenes! Also Robin Hood: men in tights, love that movie but it’s more of a parody…
Hello and thanks! I haven't seen the Witches film, so no context there. Sorry about Blade, did you agree about The Nightmare Before Christmas, also a gothic horror.
@@theworstthingaboutnewbooks6006I’d say yeah? I think maybe because it’s animation and more fairytale-like it feels more like fantasy! You should definitely check out the witches movie, it’s something!
I don’t remember this story at all! You’ll make me reread this and I have a million books to read😂 Have you read Richard Tierney’s Simon magus novel, “drums of chaos” ? I thought it was quite interesting, somehow pulpier than the short stories! And thank you for the video, hope you have an amazing day as well!
Sure thing! This collection is the only thing I've read by him thus far.
Read Hiero's Journey in the 70s and Unforsaken Hiero in the 80s. They were magnificent. The sequel leaves you hanging. I heard, I don't remember where that he had the next in the series outlined in his mind, but then had a stroke or something and couldn't write the final book. A great tragedy. The stories are right up there with something Tolkien, Jordan, or Sanderson would write.
Yup yup!!!!!!
Great! I’d have to agree with you on this one! Also for anyone else interested this collection has been reprinted as “swords against caesar” the original is out of print and a bit pricey, as far as I can tell they are practically the same though (minus the cool spot illustration unfortunately!)
Thanks for the shout out!
I also only played rogue a few times! Nethack was my introduction to roguelikes and it’s pretty cool, and I definitely want to try TOME, Angband, ADOM, Omega… more, but I tend to gravitate towards simpler/more straightforward stuff like Infra arcana, doom the roguelike, and (my favourite I think) Temple of torment. Great video!
Oh and forgot to mention Brogue! But would that be more of a rogue-lite…? It feels as rich as rogue at least, if not as fiddly as nethack and stuff like that! It’s just fun to play and a bit more forgiving than other roguelikes!
Sure thing and welcome!!!
Just discovered your channel and love your videos! Hope you are well and happy! Haven’t read this but it does sound intriguing….
Welcome, and grab a seat!!!
This one is one of my favourites! 10 out of 10 for me!
Thnx, man! I missed this earlier, and I'm glad I got to watch tonight!
Sure thing!!!
This is a great list! I still recall seeing your Number One choice at a Drive-in! And your choice of 9 was one of my faves, as well!
Awesome possum!!!
You really nail the analysis of how well the producers set up the history and science - thanks to the teachers -- and I always found that first episode, where they enter the junkyard and discover the TARDIS, to be very mysterious! Leading into stories like "The Aztecs" and more, the show carried a lot of promise, and it sure did pay off! Your mention of "Robots of Death" reminds me to mention that I started watching when the PBS stations picked up the Tom Baker stories, and that Hinchcliff era sure was fantastic! I liked Barry Letts and Jon Pertwee's team as well, and I should tell you (you likely already know) that in "Robots of Death" Taren Capel was a name loosely based on the writer who coined the term "Robot" (as in slave). He was a Russian named Karel Capek and he wrote a play about a robot revolution! ALSO, Chris Boucher wrote some sequel novels and the Big Finish folks did some neat follow-up audios called "Caldor City" - very good expansions on the world! tardis.wiki/wiki/Taren_Capel
SCORE!!! Thank you, ABE!!
Yupper puppers!!!
The third book was intended to explore world building by the Earthseeds, but Butler had passed away from a fall before she had a chance to complete a draft
Cool!
I did read the story and I agree with you that Philip could be dick is a brilliant sci-fi writer maybe of all time. That is he is a brilliant sci-fi brighter in the genre of distorted reality. My question is I didn't understand the ending of this story and I was looking for somebody who may have an insight as to what the last few lines actually meant.
Hello! I hear you.
FYI.... If you're looking to improve your videos I might suggest you write out your responses ahead of time, review it, making an outline that includes the notes that you are about to speak of. If you want people to keep coming back to your videos you're going to have to become a smoother with your delivery...
Hello! I do for the bigger stuff, like novels or my Top Ten stuff or Serial review. Not smaller things like short stories.
Still remember my Golem Death-Monk from Z. Only winner I ever had. Broken AC values. Hi, by the way, Abe. Been awhile.
Yuppers puppers!!!
Abe Roguelikes were my first obsession. Way back in college more years than I care to admit :) I have played all of those and still am playing angband today. I think I like zangband a bit more because it had more classes, races, etc. Have you played Hengband? It's a Japanese made Hengband and has my favorite roguelike class-the Magic Eater
Nope, i haven;t! i love Zangband's interpretations of chaos and mutations and won when playing a CHaos Warrior Beastman.
You owe it to yourself to dig up a copy of Carter's "Tara of the Twilight" his erotic novel about a female swordswoman who somehow remains virginal throughout the novel despite being captured by lustful enslavers. It contains such charming elements as child r*pe. and a pro -pedophilia subtext. It told me more about the man than any biography ever would. The entire efeect is ick, ick, ick!
I;m going to say...no thanks right now.
My favorite is Infra Arcana and I lean towards Nethack style of roguelikes with just purely dungeon diving. Sil is probably my second favorite.
Hello!!! Thanks for your fun thoughts!!!
The ending leaves me flat, too :)
Yeah i hear you!!!!
Maybe you could produce TH-cam shorts picking a random book from your shelf, top 5s or mini reviews etc? I see a lot of booktubers do this and it could help you grow your audience and boost your watch time and subs?
Very cool!! Those must be fun escapades in the modules!
Yuppers puppers!!!
Hey Awesome Abe, this piece is in the 'Space and Time' magazine re-prints, which have been published in the last couple of years as paperback compendiums. Space and Time is something like Weird Tales, but with more of a tendancy towards sci-fi -you should check them out 😀
Thanks for the heads up!!!
Thank ye, Abe! The more i hear you discuss this collection, the more curious I am!! Rock on!!
Yup yup!!!!!!
My favorite book in the series, regardless!
Thanks for writing!!!
The serials -- I remember that when I was a tiny kid, some UHF stations still played them early on Saturday mornings, and some of them were fantastic! I can't believe this was all the way back in 1935! WILD!
Yup yup!!!!!!
Holy grail!!! YEAH!
Glad you like it!!!
Those classics : are they mostly from Europe ? Time Machine , Daniel Defoe, around the world in 80 days-tends to cross with school literature
I know that the book Mysterious Island by Verne in France and Mary Poppins is British, but i'm not sure if those films or others are from Europe filming.
Derleth never understood what constitutes cosmic horror. And upon Lovecraft’s death he appointed himself the keeper of the Mythos but unfortunately he behaved more like the proverbial dog in the hayloft.
I get that thoughts, yup!!!
Interesting never head of this author
Yup, check him out!
Great review! Thank you!!
Sure thing!!!
His writing is incredible! The descriptive power is great, and the style is nearly poetic! Great choice Abe. I like Gwen's comment, as well. Your coverage is excellent! Take care, all. :)
Sure thing!!!
I started reading that last week, and now moving on to the other Hyperborea tales by CAS with the night shade collection of books. Love your coverage of the mythos!
Thanks much!!!
This video is about to go viral.
That would be awesome and ironic since it' show my channel got it's name.
Thanks, Abe!!! :)!
Yup yup!!!!!!
I have a son who is into entomology and loves Science Fiction. He’s in his early teens, would you say this would be a good book for him to be introduced to on HG Wells?
Big fan of George MacDonald. Beauty, goodness, and truth are all present in high concentration in his fairy tales. I like The Shadows because I think it's a reminder that negative emotions (sadness, fear, etc.) can be just what we need at times. In that sense, you could see it as serving the same pupose as Pixar's Inside Out. MacDonald's story The Light Princess centers around the same idea, but comes at it from the opposite angle (showing what life is like for a princess who is incapable of serious emotion of any kind).
Hello! Correct, good catch with Inside Out
This looks like an interesting collection, the only thing is, here in UK the price is eyewatering -like £ 65 or more 😬
Sorry about that!!!
It has been reprinted as “swords against caesar” and it’s much cheaper! That’s how I got it a while ago, the chaosium edition has always been really pricey.
@@konstantinos-6-6-6-8 Yup!
This isn’t very relevant to this video but I’ve been wanting to ask, have you ever read any horror novels by the likes of Robert R. McCammon or Dean Koontz? You’ve probably read Brian Lumley. He’s pretty great, Derleth protégé though he is. I’m re-exploring those kinds of books, which I last read a couple decades ago. McCammon’s The Night Boat is my favorite so far, but his book They Thirst is fun too, as is Koontz’s Shadowfires. I guess they’re kinda like long-form pulp fiction, and a lot of them would make kick-ass movies lol.
Yup! I haven;t done much of a deep dive into horror novels since i prefer the faster vibes of horror shorts. Sorry about that!
