Celeste de la Cabra looks at Aaron's Top Horror Films of the 21st Century
มุมมอง 19414 วันที่ผ่านมา
Celeste de la Cabra is a horror expert, at least in Aaron's opinion. They spent some time going through Aaron's Top 100 Horror Films of the 21st century. Celeste had not looked at the list beforehand, and it turned out she had seen 63 of the films. She had some great takes, as expected.
CineJourneys Spooky Season - Slant Best 100 Horror of the 21st Century
มุมมอง 77หลายเดือนก่อน
Derek Smith joins Aaron to talk about the Slant list for best horror films of the 21st century. Derek writes for Slant and is going to be a guide for CineJourneys, so he had some great insights. Of course we quibbled about some of the results, but that's kind of the point with lists.
CineJourneys - Episode 15 - 100 Best Horror Films from Variety
มุมมอง 113หลายเดือนก่อน
Jill and Aaron review the Variety 100 Best Horror films, film by film. Somehow Jill was possessed and we aren't sure why, but good news, she's fine now. Overall we thought this list was okay. We have some quibbles and there were a couple of films we thought were too high, some too low. There were a couple that we thought were egregiously low, but that's bound to be the case with most subjective...

Classic Suspense - Chapter 2 "Buckle Up"
มุมมอง 472 หลายเดือนก่อน
The second chapter of our Classic Suspense Journey is called "Buckle Up." We watched Henri-Georges Clouzot's The Wages of Fear (1953), which is widely considered to be among the best suspense films of all time. We followed it with William Friedkin's Sorcerer (1977), which had some distribution challenges (mostly due to being released close to the time frame of Star Wars), but it is still consid...

Coming of Age Chapter 3 Video
มุมมอง 622 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the third chapter of our Coming of Age Journey, and we really dived deep into Dazed and Confused. We also discussed Rohmer's The Green Ray, and the pairing worked well because there's a clear connection between the work of Rohmer and Linklater. The Green Ray is cited as a direct influence. As for Dazed and Confused, we shared a couple stories from Melissa Maerz's book "Alright Alright A...
Criterion Now - Episode 152 Video

Ryan Verrill joins the podcast to announce that we are joining Someone's Favorite Productions network. We also get into the November 2024 announcements on the heels of having already reacted (somewhat critically) to the CC40 boxset. We are pleased with this month, and we show a different side of Mifune to show our gratitude. Someone’s Favorite Productions Links: linktr.ee/someonesfavoriteproduc...
Criterion Now - Episode 151 - CC40
มุมมอง 4123 หลายเดือนก่อน
Jill and Aaron take a look at the recently announced Criterion Collection 40 box set, which was based on the selections of guests who have visited their closet and recorded a video. We think this was a bad idea and strays from their vision, and we are not exactly sure who this is for. Criterion Now - Episode 150 - Video with Imogen Sara Smith

Imogen Sara Smith joins for our special episode 150, which we recorded without interruptions. We talk about a number of subjects including the thrill and rarity of seeing a repertory nitrate screening. She talks about her craft process, and how she approaches writing about film. The strangers not scary? Let 3 people break in your home and see how it is 😂. Good video.
What a great listen! Really enjoyed the conversation between you and Celeste. Aaron knows of my love of folk horror, and to that end, especially learning that that Celeste is a fan of The VVitch, I would highly recommend both Hagazussa (2017) and Jessica Hausner's Hotel (2004) (both Austrian/German offerings), but the one that I would really love to hear both of your opinions on (especially Celeste) is the 2004 Belgium film, Calvaire, by Fabrice du Welz. It's very much in line with some of the French extreme films of the time, but oddly, no where nearly as graphic (although the horror mashup aesthetic of Texas Chainsaw Massacre/Deliverance/Psycho is immensely disturbing). Hope you can check it out!
Thanks again for having me!
Andiamo!
22:32 I watched this with my S Korean ex and it was an eye opening experience of how we interpret a movie living in our culture vs someone else's. Even down to what clothing certain characters were dressed in.
Man. This was so so good. Maybe it’s just my sensibilities but I love when smart people talk about cinema that is made to challenge. 😀 Two better people you couldn’t find. It’s a great list Aaron and while my list may be in a different order the conversation about what it says about us as individuals is amazing. Bravo on doing this with Celeste as well. Brilliant
I'm so happy to hear Jill's southern accent again. I thought Criterion Now was over.
We recorded 3 episodes in 2 weeks. We're back, y'all! Thanks for finding us again.
Move on, this is an amazing beginning for new film lovers who haven't gotten into the collection before, why complain about sharing the love of film?, don't buy if you don't want
I mention Imogen al the time on my channel #letstalkcriterion
That's awesome. I know your channel and appreciate your work. Not sure if I've subscribed but will remedy that. (This is Aaron)
@@cinejourneys2830 Thanks Aaron.
I own about a third of these movies and while I like the idea of the set but many of the movies I would rather just buy the solo release and some films I'm not interested in that I would buy other films by those directors. Like you mentioned I think an upgrade of the janus set, maybe adding some new modern classics would have been more interesting to me or just a regular directors set. and just cause it still annoys me they have a woman under the influence as the only film in the Cassavetes box set so I would still need to buy the rest of that set to watch his movie and this.
Completely agree with both of you here. This seems like something that has no real constituency (the casual physical media buyer -- if such a person exists anymore -- will not be interested in something so bulky and so expensive) and if this is the only thing Criterion is doing to mark their 40th anniversary this is a serious missed opportunity. Everyone can quibble with their selection here and your comments are spot-on -- I noticed zero Hitchcocks. That's...interesting.
Criterion Collection Starter Kit. Great for those just starting out.
Appreciated Jill's comment that the resources that went into this could have produced something more desirable to regular Criterion buyers and appreciators. There have been some controversial Criterion releases in the past but I don't remember one that so many fans thought was a bit of a turkey.
Great conversation all around. I do agree that this boxset is bit wayward with its existence and wish that Criterion had ventured down a different path. Yes, it's a celebration of films but this is clearly appeasing a collector's market majority in mentality.
Aaron and Jill, great discussion with Imogen Sara Smith! I love her writing and analysis on film, and her work on Criterion Collection supplements is a must watch for me on any release she appears on. Good stuff!
Thank you, James! She's the best and we really enjoyed the discussion!
What joy to listen to Imogen talk with both of you on so many topics. Another big vote of support for The Cassandra Cat. A wonderful movie and if anyone wants. I’m physical release I can recommend Second Run’s Blu Ray which is multi region. Congrats on the 150!
Thanks, Chris. That Blu Ray is on the list. Second Run does great work!
Loved this conversation guys :) Definitely a lot of films that will end up being discussed over the nextt few years. Like Rodney, I am a massive Raw fan. So much to discuss there but not sure an extreme horror journey is one that will have widespread appeal :)
Great to see you!
Congrats!!!!
!!!! ❤
Great job, Jill, Bob, and Aaaron! 🎆
