    I totally disagree with what you’re putting out there. What are you doing other than stating your opinion. It is absolutely necessary to have a DSMB and finger spool and know how to use it. Why would you tell new divers it’s not necessary to have this device? How do expect these divers to be seen if separated from the dive boat in any current. You make good points on the camera gear for the new diver to concentrate on the basics but a DSMB is the basics. The computer is expensive but who the hell buys multiple computers as you advance. Sit down and learn the operation manual on a really good computer so you can grow into it. Maybe they will jump into tech diving later. My ScubaPro G2 has lasted for over 7 years. Also, do you really want to trust a half ass computer with your safety at multiple dives at varying depths??? Not sure you’re putting out the best content.

      No problem. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. My content is, of course based on my opinion and experience. Other outlooks are always welcome.

    First understand what you are doing when you scuba dive then give advices. A reel and a DSMB is something that a diver should be trained to use during his OWD of cours when you have 2 or 3 days cheap OWD not following the standards you wont. A beacon is something that can make the difference between being found by an helicopter or being dead. My opinion is get expertise and come to talk later. And no, being divemaster or instructor teaching knees on the ground single first stage, S80 40m air diving doesn't make you an expert.

    The NUMBER ONE thing: dive buddies are not a security factor (as they tell you) but a risk factor! never do a dive with a buddy that you would not dare do alone! and if you do not dare going solo, get better training. (NUMBER TWO, if you are a seasonal diver: never start a season with dives requiring a proficiency level you ended the previous season at)

    Actually the worst thing is using the only toilet on a dive boat to reapply your makeup after a dive. I've been in the queue and its agony. If you must pee in your suit do it 10 to 15 minutes before getting out of the water then it will have rinsed through. My sinuses really appreciate the drain after a dive. 😂

    Reels are actually very easy to use even for a beginner if you do it the right way. So in my point of view it is better to start to use a dsmb directly with a reel with a good training. The computer : if you are really into diving, why buy a cheap computer and then buy a new one 1 or 2 years after instead of buying directly a good one ? It will be cheaper at the end and you don't have to stand this crappy computer you can't even read well for a year or two (that works with other pieces of equipment). Buying cheap and buying better later is an advice we hear pretty often on many fields, I never follow this advice.

    Something that has always bothered me(for several reasons), is that when my parents paid for my brother(who suffers from anxiety, as well as claustrophobia and other things) and I to get certified, there was just _one_ thing that he "couldn't" do, and thus never got certified. It was the part of the open water portion of certification, when you have to take your mask off underwater, put it back on, and clear it(something that divers do all the time. At least the clearing aspect, due to people's tendency to get crappy masks.) Not only did he panic and fail to perform the skill, but to make matters worse, out instructor(who was an enormous (former)Navy diver) actually held him down by the shoulders for a few seconds when my brother panicked and tried to make a beeline to the surface(not necessarily saying he was wrong to do that, and i understand he was just trying to communicate to my brother that he was okay and had a source of oxygen, but restricting a claustrophobic person, especially when they're panicking, is not the best way to calm them down.)

The thought of someone throwing up in their regulator & a chunk was lodged in it waiting to be released when I used it was unbearable 😂

    We bought our 1st dive computer 2nd hand before 1st dive for $45 w/transmitter. It only had 8 dives back in early 90’s still does allllll the features that our new computers do. We’re learning stuff about our surface interval info w/options for upcoming time, depth, etc… and checked our 1st dive computer & it has all the same abilities. I love my new big screen dive computer that easily transfers info to my apps & has 4 buttons to help me go through screens, but the 90’s version does everything it does. Just starting out I recommend getting an older model until figuring out what your needs will be as you go. I’m 52 dives in & still adjusting my gear a year later. I think that’s gonna keep happening forever!! 😂

    When it comes to dive computers, I say buy once cry once! Get a nice Shearwater computer with AI and use it forever! Second, a DSMB with a spool are required for dive boats down her in Florida. Third, everyone should have at least a line cutter on them at all times. They're very small and take up almost no space. Get a ceramic one so it wont' rust. And finally, everyone should invest in a personal locater beacon or EPIRB as soon as they possible can. A new diver is just as likely to get lost or left as a seasoned diver. Maybe even more so! Happens multiple times per year down here.

    i'm enjoying your content very much, i've dived for 24 years now, but my girlfriend has for only 3 and she's around 30 dives so i'm showing her some of your videos, however, i've come to realise that some of the old tropes standarized by the average capitalist diving industries runed by marketing people and not divers, 1:50 why the two regulators on the right side? if you have to donate your _octopus,_ even though that it is on a very flashy 90cm/25'' yellow hose, it's gonna come to your buddies wrong side, and it is all gonne be in the way, twisted right there in front of your face, so put that hose on the oposite side of the 1st stage, here comes the other issue: if you need to use it, it is going to be on your wrong side... this is why i started using hogarthian routing, which btw is doable with a single 1st stage and long hose (213cm/83'') donate with the backup 2nd stage neatly hanging from your neck on a collar, this way it solves both issues with regular recreational diving reg setup, it baffles me that put another dollar in & company agencies hasn't adopted some of these methods that tech diving solved many years ago, it looks quite arrogant to think they know everything and not learn from the bests, after all safety is the key here. another example at 2:45, why snorkel? it's a tangle hazard, i've seen a few times bad dsmb deployments that rip the mask of the diver's face due to the snorkel being attached to it and the line tangled on it, it makes no sense, recreational divers don't carry around a backup mask, but a regulator, so, why? let's be honest with outselves, if the sea is calm, you don't need a snorkel, and if the sea is rough, you're gonna get water in it anyway defeating it's purpose, it's use is not even niche...

  • @CrazyScubaCouple
    @CrazyScubaCouple 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    kinda agree with everything but i would have started the list with the snorkel. and i say kinda because, is not the same an expensive rec computer like the aladin galileo that allows you to see maps and shit that no one uses and other nonsense than a tech one like the shearwater petrel that has a really simple and intuitive interface and a reliable compass, and when you do the advanced course you wont need to carry two different things on your arms, just one, which is the point of this video =)

    Definitely a condition I beleive should be added to teaching material across the industry. I am a cold water instructor in Canada and I've had a very close call with IPO with a student where they did stop breathing. Fortunately I was able to get them to shore and breathing again and they made a full recovery. But it could have easily been worse and could have possibly been prevented if either me or the other instructor knew of the condition.

    Never Ever peed in suit. My dive buddy did that the first year during a freezing cold winter dive. It was 25° outside. So we stowed our gear and rode home in our wetsuits. The smell of urine was pungent. I have no doubt that that urine worked its way all over his body and possibly up in his ear canal. So gross. I never would do that after that.

    I don't get your point. IPO is part of the training for most organisations BSAC, ScotSAC, SAA, VDST, CMAS etc. It is omitted from the training from the likes of PADI because their modus operandi is to reduce their syllabus as much as possible, many of the medical information is omitted, IPO, PFO, gas density, ICD etc as are some of the gas laws, decompression theory, mandatory decompression diving, gas usage calculations etc. PADI excels at getting divers in the water with the minimum training necessary, by omitting "advanced topics" such as outlined above - hence why it is popular with holiday divers who may only dive 30 times a year or fewer, essentially they can get a diving qualification and start diving whilst away on holiday, and still have time to enjoy the rest of their holiday. Other US style organisations also follow this philosophy. You can't have it both ways, you either reduce the syllabus for commercial purposes, or you include everything like this in the syllabus leading to longer training times. Obviously there are consequences such as this tragic event (by no means unique) with IPO, but there are many other events as a result of many medical, or operational circumstances which similarly, knowledge of which is not included in the training.

  • @alisonanthony1228
    @alisonanthony1228 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Excellent video, especially about not letting yourself be pressured into doing a dive you're not comfortable with or trained for. My buddy absolutely hates penetrative wreck dives, so we don't do them. It's that simple. I'm just happy being underwater so it's not a big deal to me anyway. Also, don't let the depth junkies get into your head. For most dives, all the best stuff is around 10 to 15 metres anyway so why bother going deeper if you don't have to? One last point I'd like to make is to not get stressed if you're blowing through your air quicker than your buddy. If you're a new diver, you're going to do that. We've all been there and most of us will understand that. There'll always be the odd one who pouts about having to ascend a bit early, but ignore them. Your air consumption will fall as you get more relaxed under water, it's a learning curve. And don't forget that anyone can call a dive at any time for any reason. If you're not happy - call it. If you're cold - call it. If you're uncomfortable about something - call it. If you forgot your lucky rabbit foot - call it. There's always another day to dive!

    Useful video - Thanks. YES - agree with you: Reel: The reel gave me a problem on my open water course (May 2024) as I thought I was letting it rotate freely but my instructor thought I was holding it. NO - don't agree with you: Gloves: I was wearing gloves - in the Maldives - as well as a 5mm wetsuit - I was comfortably warm, not cold and not hot - but then at age 70, my tendency to feel cold is greater (I think) than when I was young. Gloves: For many older divers (ME ME ME) as you age your skin gets thinner as it loses collagen, and cuts and abrasions to the hands are more likely. Knife: I had a very old dive knife fairly small and with no tip - Line or nets can (I believe) happen anywhere and the modern cutting tools seem to be to be a BIG no no - I had one demonstrated by a dive instructor in a dive shop and he cut his thumb on it and it really bled a LOT :) (Sorry, shouldn't laugh, but it was kind of funny) The advantage with my knife is that I know where to hold it :) :) :) NOT SURE: Computer: I bought a really cheap computer (£60) to see how they work and on my training dives wore that and one provided by the instructor - it was pretty close to the more expensive one - obviously if I do a lot of diving I will upgrade. Probably to something with bells whistles and a coffee maker :)

    I have an D option, which is to remove your mask, the water column then compress the air space inside your nose which helps to compress the air in the Euthesian Tube, if I spell it correctly, then eventually pop the ear drum. Try it and tell me if it works.

    Amazing, never had to „prep” mask before using it. It is same crap as 1/4 back turn on your cylinder valve

    And how do I prevent my dive buddy's death after I've identified he has IPO? NOTE TO THE VIDEO EDITOR: That part of the video is tragically missing.

    I prefer to: if it's hot, take the wetsuit out at the end and go pee. If it's cold and you still have a second dive, lower the suit and do it on the back of the boat, just announce that you are going to the "toilet" so that nobody looks back and gets shocked.

      Can't say I have ever had someone announce that, that I can remember anyway, lol

    You did forget about vomiting. I never did, but that's something usual on a diving boat.

    An independent backup air supply should be mandatory. Relying on your buddy is a bad idea. Air supplies can fail, and contrary to what beginners learn, they may not free-flow when they fail. I have rescued one person whose tank o-ring blew, resulting in a complete shutdown of her air supply. She was a beginner, and by the time I got to her she had already inhaled some water after completely filling her belly, so yes, an alternate air supply could have made the rescue unnecessary. Her buddy never noticed until he saw me on the surface taking her towards the shore, and then he swam over to assist.
