Why Roger Federer is world #1..........
Ireland is not part of the British isles! FFS!
That British Open in the late 40s where Harry played a shot from a broken beer bottle rather than waiting for a ruling, causing him to lose that Open made him a BIG Winner in my mind! One of the few to out-putt Billy Casper too! I liked his feel for chip and run and pitch and run shots too! The double-Vardon overlap grip fascinates me too!
1:45 - I wonder if Billy's back is hurting a bit. He seems to be pushing a lot of short shots.
Harry Bradshaw should of won The Open Championship in 1949. If not for the misfortune of one of his shots landing against a piece of glass from a broken beer bottle on the course, odds were in his favor to win. He elected to play the ball as it lay over taking a customary drop and it cost him when he barely moved the ball forward on his shot. He would lose in a tight match to the eventual winner Bobby Locke.
I played this course with my brother in, I believe 2015. Quite a challenge, where local knowledge reins supreme.
Its just amazing to me that Harry Bradshaw could play such great golf in those difficult conditions with that swing of his. He just seemed to take half a backswing and hit the ball with his hands and forearms. I guess he had what used to be called"educated hands" and could find the back of the golf ball from any lie with any stance. Magic
He had a slight ott move like Koepka and Anser so not so old fashioned after all !!
Harry Bradshaw was a golfing machine! Thank you for sharing these.
they didn't spend enuff time to play decent golf. That's why people like Tiger came in and Destroyed their records.
A look back in time at normality and nobody addicted to a mobile phone
Interesting to see how wristy that Billy Casper is with his putting stroke.
that scoring lady was breathtaking. hard to believe she would be in her seventies
Listen, Billy Casper was an excellent player, great putter and winner. Many tournaments he outplayed Nicklaus, Palmer, Player and everyone else. He shouldn't be underrated based on his ability to win.
Casper played faster than normal so he could go home. Those greens were bumping along at about 7. One of the few times Billy looked svelt. Well, almost. Give Harry Bradshaw credit, he knew the course and played it well. Would like to have seen more of the course.
Casper looked like his back was in pain, he grimaced on one swing early in the round
Real golfers
Great to see a young Sergio.
I spent about a month practicing and playing with Harry Bradshaw back when i was about 25 years and he was amazing .fantastic but itvwas also his stories dbouttnhid golfing life and Ireland that kept me glued to.listening to him. What a wonderful man znd golfer david flood
I really like how much faster they played in those days. They didn't spend 5 minutes before each shot conferring with their caddy, checking yardage books, rehearsing their swing, etc.- they just grabbed a club out of the bag, stepped up to the ball, and gave it a whack.
Seve said miss it quick
Love that wristy putter style.
On the slower greens that most of us play on, that style would help a lot of people putt better I think.
Bradshaw was quirky in style but Formidable in delivery! Never get tired of watching this match.
Billy Casper, the most underated player in the 1960s,during the time of Palmer, Nicklaus and Player, the he was the most consistent money winner and wins, no excitement in his game but the man I'd want to make putts for me
Gene Sarazen said about George Rodgers that he didn't know much about golf and thought this show would make him a star, Gene I don't think like George much
Really didnt worry much about conditioning back then. Those wristy putting strokes would never work on today's fast greens.
That weather is brutal....
George and Gene were a great team. And the girls were gorgeous.
Little did they know JFK was about to be murdered in Dallas by a cabal of oil tycoon, CIA, mob, and others.
Bradshaw's swing doesnt look like he was hitting it as far and straight as he was. So crazy how good they were with those clubs and balls Also, I love how the flag kids SPRINT to a ball that was only hit like 50 yards ahead....I think the player knows that's his ball lmao. Why were they doing that for shots so obvious who's ball it was
I absolutely LOVE old golf videos
Great stuff thanks and max respect for posting this up.John
Love the way they leave flagstick in when putting😂 suppose its turned FULL CIRCLE.
Thanks very much for posting this gem. My parents spent their honeymoon at the Canada Cup in Portmarnock three years earlier, in 1960, and I still have the programme they brought back, with Harry Bradshaw's autograph in it, alongside those of Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Peter Thomson, Kel Nagle, Bobby Locke, Roberto de Vicenzo, Peter Alliss, Dai Rees, and everyone who was anyone in the game at that time. Harry could compete with the best of them, and might have won the British Open in the late 40s but for the famous beer bottle incident. I had the privilege of playing in an Irish Schools final in Portmarnock in 1978 and my two team-mates and I met Harry in the pro shop afterwards. He was sitting in the corner and our teacher said to him; "Well, Harry, have you any advice for these three young lads?". Harry just looked at us and said; "Practice the short game; practice the short game". I always thought to myself afterwards, it's so important he said it twice. And when you look at this match now, you can appreciate why he said it. Harry was revered in Ireland alongside Christy O'Connor Senior and his reputation from 100 yards in was legendary. He was Head Professional at Portmarnock, which sounds like like one of those grandiose Director of Golf titles everyone seems to have nowadays, but really, as far as I can remember, his pro shop was that little building behind the first tee that looks like a shed. But people used to come and pay their respects to him, just to chat and hear his stories, and he was a great represenative for Portmarnock, much like Sam Snead at The Greenbrier. And he wasn't above relieving one or two of the pilgrims of their hard-earned cash either...All in all, one of Nature's gentlemen, and still revered by Irish golfers of a certain age today.
...and thanks for your post. ...like reading John Feinstein or Lorne Rubinstein’s adventures in Dornoch.
Cuts away at the end...We'll never know what club Billy would have recommended around the green : (
Thnx for putting these up. Classic telecast. A real treasure.
Wonderful
I think the real chislers are the ones paying a kid to work for 4 hours for only 20 cents. When Sarazen talks about Bradshaw's swing, it sounded like he said because of his build he has to swing fat.
Thank you so much for the video, Colin. Amazing!!!
I love love love watching these…
Hold up, these guys aren't warming up properly. I don't see their launch monitors.
Golf in Ireland is a must you can possibly do it. Links golf is challenging and a lot of fun. Good courses are all over the island. Just be prepared to walk. Unless things have changed, few courses have "buggies".
Absolutely love watching these matches. Bill was a great player but I just love Harry. He had eight 64s on this course. I love his swing, simple no nonsense and what a short game.
Harry's swing just didnt look good...amazing he was so good
@dufftruffison7168 Terrible dynamics but very effective. He would have learnt by feel and trial and error. No computer analysis in those days.
The course, the clubs, the balls, the technique - purity of golf that we dont have today
We have lost alot, it was a much better game.
.. what have we lost?
What club was Billy Casper going to recommend?
Course management - Harry Bradshaw knew exactly how to play it. No mean feat though, to beat 'Billy Casper,' who was at the top of his game and one of the top players on the US PGA tour.
Billy won 51 tour events. Way underrated.
You could actually hit putts hard back then, these days you have to just try to baby the putts to the hole. Too many courses mow their greens too close now.
No it's cause they didn't have the machine to cut grass at 3mm then putting on quick greens is more skillful than smashing a ball on long greens
@@whataplonker82 it's stupid to have to baby tap every putt, they weren't trying to cut grass at 3mm like that's some perfect green length, so they weren't missing anything.
Not mine lol, there's a perfectly fast astro turf practice green with multiple holes - and then every real green on the course is longer with loads of bumps
I take that final bit of advice all the time.
Excellent Is this the full video or do you know of any other footage of this event?
You look at Bradshaws swing and you think how the hell can this guy play? Then you look at his score 73. Impressive!!! Great short game right there!
He had very big strong wrists and arms
And he shot - what did they say - 8 rounds of 64 round there. I can tell you, having played it several times, to do that 60 years ago with those clubs and balls is remarkable. Also, look at the amount of times he hit a 2- or 4-wood or a 2-iron into the greens and left the ball within single-putt distance. Today's Tour pros with their "drive and a sand wedge to every hole" type games, I daresay, could hardly do better, especially in that wind. It's also encouraging to see again how "it's not how, but how many". All the focus on having the picture-perfect swing and being in the proper positions all the time takes all the fun out of the game for many people who just get over-analysed and over-coached. Harry was good enough where it counted, a foot before to a foot after the ball, as was Trevino, as was Moe Norman, as is Furyk. Good observation of yours. Hope your short game has benefitted!
First I heard of Harry Bradshaw. Swing much like Moe Norman.
Uuh, no
@@generalgrant3189 Lots of similarities. 4:34
@@whetedge name one ?
@@generalgrant3189 _"name one"_ Trail foot flat on the ground until after impact.
So much more character than they could ever conjure up today.. When they introduced the scorekeepers, I could just have well been getting ready for a game of CLUE. ''Keeping score will be Shelby Plum, lovely daughter of Professor Plum.'' I always love watching Casper play and what a treat to see Harry Bradshaw hit that low hook in the wind. Who can do that nowadays?
I am that chiseller at 4 .30
Thanks for uploading. A great match between two great golfers on a magnificent course.
