Welcome! Here we explore, discus, and review the model engines available. 4-stroke gas engines, hit and miss, multi-cylinder, hot-air and steam engines; I'm fascinated by all of them. I love optimising them with simple tweaks and mods, and creating tools as I go. I'm not an engineer, like most of you, but enthusiastic in sharing this hobby.
The number of engines available has risen hugely with CAD-CAM machining, particularly from China. We look at the constant flow of new desktop model engines plus multi-cylinder engines. Any interesting model engines from anywhere! Let me know!
This channel is becoming a place to chat, find out and swap ideas.
I love reading and replying to comments and we can all learn there - I know I do!
You are most welcome here!

Sooooo cool man! I dont feel crazy anymore!
Thanks....I think.
Hi Mr , Congratulations for your works Questions: Wich modelengine do you.prefer..? Steam, Gasoline, Diesel ( new génération...)....and ...horizontal or vertical..or oblic... warms regards. Claude. France
Hi Claude! Of course this is personal. I like the hit and miss gasoline. There are reasons. You can find a carburetor setting that works at one speed and works well. The hit and miss carburetor has no throttle. It's more difficult to build a carburetor work well at all speeds, but hit and miss engines have just one. And everything works slowly. This means, low strain on the parts, low friction etc. This means that even if the model is poorly made out of weak metals, you can get it running beautifully th-cam.com/video/CywmzhaHVeo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=v52Wji6sfGuo-X_9&t=442 and it is authentic. And, they are cheaper than complex engines. A V8 model or V12 is nice but you need a carb and ignition that works from 500rpm to 10000rpm, 8 spark plugs that all work, cams...and every problem is x 8. So, single or two cylinder is usually enough for me. I started loving steam engines as a child. Fire and water...There is excitement when an engine starts up, it is like coming alive. Steam engines do this coming alive thing well, but slow petrol enginess also feel like a coming alive at every start, the sound and smell entrances me. I like Stirling engines for their simplicity, like a small poem, but as they keep all the air inside you lose the possibility of exhaust music! In my computer programming I also like to build code that "comes alive" when it runs, just like a model engine, it is a creation of life. Perhaps that's why so few women play with engines? They don't need them to create life? :)
My dad built one of those and it has since quit running. I'm going to use this video to help troubleshoot it.
Good luck, I hope it helps. It's quite methodical to troubleshoot a small engine, really
Hi , great videos, im hoping to buy one of these soon..in your experience, Which is best engine out of the current models
The MUSA hit and miss. However it's not cheap. The one in this video needed a lot of work like main bearings, valve work. The MUSA Retrol hit and miss is by far the best and most likely to tun well and be an heirloom model and keep its value
That's not the way to drive a recipricating steam engine. The cut off is not a regulator.
? As there's no other way to do it on this engine, I'm curious to know what you mean
brilliant 🤩

That first one, a great little engine, only i dont know what i'd call it, its a V-Twin like a Harley but the cylinders and heads seem to be modelled after an air cooled BMW engine and the timing cover is Triumph Twin design.
You're absolutely right
What a fun collection. I love the old toys.
Thank you 🤗Welcome to the channel! Looking back at my Auld crane and Wilesco Traktor, they're in pretty much original condition. How many modern toys can you say that? Model steam engines might be a bit meditative for the modern screen generation, though...
That was neatly done. Thanks amigo, and greetings from the U.S. I don't know if you know him, but Howard, over at Milford Lathes, has some great stuff for sale on his site. I recently purchased a Stuart D10 that is currently the crown of my collection.

@@ducttapetech9885 After all these years, and with more knowledge now, I realise the attention to detail he put in. Hardened piston, silver soldered boiler, solidly built safety valve holding double the pressure of a Mamod or Wilesco, and that machining quality. Standout in steam toys, I think
Thomas have you used any lube/graphite on your R01 piston? Cheers Jim

It's a perfect match. Welcome David!
It was light weight, efficienr, easy to build, and quite able to fly free flight models swing a 12 inh or larger prop. Much easier to build and maintain than those clunky sinker weight motors which you display.. Light weight and efficiency is the byword with free flight.
Yes, the early free flight engines were such a joy! The more modern engines are more for looks than performance. I well remember running across fields in rural Canterbury, New Zealand and launching my Vic Smeed Tomboy into the blue. Sometimes it would catch a thermal and nearly disappear. Happy days...
Have you run a "Hoosier Whirlwind" compressed air model aircraft engine? Designed by Bert Pond in 1928 and quite popular.
I will look it up, sounds interesting
Things of the past become passions of the future
That's deep and seems to be a tru-ism. But why?
Starting engine in wrong direction
Holts are supposed to tun in the other direction originally. Jin built this model to run this way, it won't start the other way
Hi Thomas, have you any videos on timing a Eachine hit and miss engine, I know about TDC and the spark, no one on youtube explains the position of the cam at TDC though. many thanks for all your excellent videos over the year.
OK let me try to think it through. Not at TDC, but the exhaust cam should open at the beginning of the exhaust stroke and close et the end of it.
Many thanks Thomas, I will try that. wishing you a great new year, keep up the good work.
@@bertyjustice For my hit and miss, ignition just after TDC gives a great single "hit" firing at low speed. The following stroke forward is the power stroke. That stroke ends with the piston as far away from the cylinder as it gets, then as the flywheel carries it around it is the exhaust stroke., The exhaust valve opens at the beginning of this stroke. The flywheel rotating keeps it pushing smoke out the exhaust, until the piston is almost back at TDC and you close the exhaust valve. In a hit and miss, as the flywheel carries it through the next stroke away from the cylinder, the governor either holds the exhaust open (miss) or if it allows the exhaust to close, the suction formed opens the intake valve and petrol-fuel mix is sucked in preparing for the next firing (hit)
Thanks again Thomas, I have printed the information out to study. Have a great new year
Finally got some spare parts and got my engine to run albeit very smokey. On the 3rd run the main drive gear spun and stripped. Tried to remove the starter drive from the crank after removing set screws but just spins and will not come off. Before I put too much force is there a secret that I am missing somewhere. Tried warming it up but will not budge only spin! Any ideas?????
Unfortunately you will have to force it off. The grubscrews have left a raised ridge on the shaft that scores the bore when rotated. It’s the hassle s I was having with trying to get my starter dog off the shaft that prompted me to install a decompression lever which I use all the time now when starting.
@@Darren_Fawcett That is what I thought might have happened. Time for brute force... How did you do the decompression lever?
Also it would pay to check your discharge check valve on your water pump. Check valve can cause hydrolocking if there is no spring installed or it could be modified to stop the ball from blocking the discharge line. My brass gears eventually chewed out because of the pump issue.
Gorgeous stuff mate so thanks for sharing, I'm a first timer so looking forward to seeing your new year's work
Great to hear from you, you're most welcome. Who knows what 2025 will bring?

Hi there you are one sick puppy I thought I was sick but WOW the attention to detail is out the gate not much rips my shorts but the likes of the wood sleepers on the flatbed loader that look exactly like they would on the real deal.. if your a bloke and you watch your videos and don’t get a twitch going on your not a true bloke !! Love your work!!!
Bwaaaahahaha love it. Thanks for the comment! But really, I just play
Bonjour Thomas, As great collector and skill mechanic, how many of your engines start out of the box without any enhancement ? Which one would be your preference ? And when comes the vertical Retrol Hit & Miss engine ? Bonnes fêtes, Amicalement, Raphaël
Nice to hear from you Raphaël. For me, the pleasure is getting the engine running what I can achieve "perfect" and learn a bit. Early engines like the M90 needed valve lapping, new main bearings, retiming the exhaust valve. Lately, engines like the Microcosm OKMO v twins need nothing done. Having to lap valves seems to be a thing of the past. I still find that a batch of engines built by an engineer's employees rather than the engineer himself will not be assembled so well. OKMO's tiniest Stirling engines are perfect out of the box. But their Rider Ericsson's usually need fiddly pump work and are simply too small. Hit & misses can always use cam and detent latch optimisation. Kontax low temperature engines are perfection, but their high temperature mini engines have machining tolerance issues with the pistons-cylinder fit, which I guess is acceptable. I don't know when the Retrol MUSA vertical will arrive, surely soon???
Hi Thomas, lovely recap of your beautiful engines, hope you have another great year with some more fab engines to show us! I have a new M17 but seems like the hall sensor is faulty, and a lovely Musa Hoglet V twin to get up and running soon - Best Regards and Happy New year to you. Ade
Thanks Ade, it's appreciated :) Same to you
I have been curious about the MUSA hoglet as I bet it is MUSA's superb engineering. Do you feel that?
@@ThomasPCGuruENGINES I do indeed, I ran the hoglet last night, started straight out the box and its a ripper! The Retrol engines seem to always need a bit of work to get them to run as you want them to.
@@AdeSwash Thanks Ade. MUSA engines for the win
that m19 engine looks like it had a lot of mods done on it
Mainly I like to add a switch so that it only fires during the hit part of the hit & miss cycle so it's not wasting battery and it's quiet
@@ThomasPCGuruENGINES ah that explains it
bought a retrol hm-01 and it arrived for christmas (i didnt buy the base since it wasnt in my budget, and i could make one myself). Call me an idiot because i spent hours trying to get it to have compression but then i realised the spark plug was still in the box.
Bwaaaaaaaaaa hahahah you made my evening. My dude, we have all been there ....Also, for this quality engine, give credit to the perfectionist, passionate engineer at MUSA. "Retrol" is just a retail brand partnership of convenience :) You have an heirloom model right there
PART TWO HERE th-cam.com/video/7p8_MKLJ8l8/w-d-xo.html Best wishes for your bloody gorgeous holiday season and a great New Year:) Support me with a "like" on the videos, drop a comment, tell a friend about the channel. Let's grow it through 2025
Wonderful wee engine! My wife bought me this for my birthday / Christmas and I put it together on Tuesday (my birthday) with the first run yesterday (Christmas). It runs great but it’s spitting out loads of black soot that covers everything! I’m using a 25:1 mix with unleaded and 4T oil but I’m beginning to think it’s too much. Not sure if I’m getting the carb mixture right, the needle is open about one turn with the throttle at ¼ . I took the plug out and it was completely covered in oil, surprised it even sparked. Should I go for a 40:1 mix?
I meant to say thank you for your videos on the HM-01, I’m working my way through your tweaks but the oil going everywhere is a bit of a problem!
Hi sorry to get to this late but yes try 40 to 1. When you feel comfortable with the engine, check the ignition timing and exhaust valve timing, like is it at tdc for spark, is exhaust at start and end of stroke. Something's not right. I like to run a lot of oil thru when my engines are new then ease it down. Is your compression good? Also, it will spit a bit of oil, but not much
@@ThomasPCGuruENGINES Thanks so much for the advice. I think I made the original mix far too oily, more like 15:1! I cleaned everything out and filled the tank with a 40:1 which is producing a lot less oil from the exhaust. Compression is great, and I've adjusted the ignition timing to TDC so it's running nice and slow.
Greetings Thomas, I have been into model engines since I was in grade school. My favorite toy was my Wilesco D-16. I am in my 70s now and still have this as well as other models. The D16 was ruined in a flood in 1972, I wanted to restore it but because of a lot of missing parts, I never did anything. Even when I was in Germany I attempted to obtain them from Wilesco but did not have much luck My question is I just purchased the V Twin R33B. Does the fuel mix flow through the gearbox for lubrication or is there a different port to provide lubrication? I filled the tank and primed the lines but I do not see any liquid in the gearbox? Should the fuel mix be a typical 2 stroke or nondetergent oil? I just filled the thank with an "engineered" 2 stroke fuel 40:1 and added additional oil to make it 3% I would think this is OK? Kind Regards, Frank
Your instincts are perfect Frank. We all use two stroke oil but better protection is better. And yes, it's splash from the crank case and not much from the cam gearbox. There might be a hole on the flywheel side for oil? Around the cams and gears I use a mix of engine oil and grease until it sticky and flowy. It is what it is...will spit out some oil due to it having basic synthetic rubber rings and not oil scraping rings although the builder, Jin from OKMO / Microcosm, has begun building engines with cast iron rings and proper oil control. These little vtwins are fun for the sound. Have fun playing!
I got my Wilesco traktor when I was 14 and oh my, how I loved that :)

I have seen a few young people's youtube channel, you're doing the best of them! It takes luck, work, and time. Good job learning how to do it!
@@ThomasPCGuruENGINES thank you so much☺️
I just got mine today!

Nice work... Hopefully things get better with this little engine. It has great potential.
I think it does too! Thanks for the support. Shiyi just sent me a video of the new injector, decompression lever. A little smoke still (ok) and no torrent of diesel from the exhaust. I am very excited!!
That’s not pre ignition a diesel engine sounds like that nice fest top model also it has to operate at a higher speed due to its flywheel weight that is usually the heaviest part on a diesel engine as it must have enough turning force to overcome the compression. The injector is a screw in type iv seen this used on engines manufactured by Bernard diesel engines made in France as I have one W71 aicooled diesel I collect small engines from Briggs , lauson , Wisconsin ect and diesels like Ducati , Lombardini but these little ones I can have in the living room the wife states it’s ok she loves the brass
I'm looking forward to a newer one with a better injector. And maybe have a go at mine. I'd love to run the model more. Not sure if I can ever run it in the kitchen, but it's a great size, looks beautiful. I think the size and weight puts the price up but I've decided it's worth it
Well done Thomas, somehow I don’t think new parts will be far away. There has been progress. th-cam.com/video/oewt7CBzOR0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=mTmjcfxmnPKTJs9c Note the steel gears, thrust bearings on shafts, decompression lever, governor speed control and significantly less unburnt fuel blowing out the exhaust.
I'm so excited, like a giddy school girl!...just less pretty
The most "steampunk" engine in my collection, and the only diesel.
Is not a very clean engine when run ;-)
What a mess you’re making! Good thing your wife kicked you out of the kitchen. Get this man some shop towels asap!!
I'm rooting for your success in improving the performance of this engine, such as eliminating compression leaks, diesel line leaks and the intake valve problem. I wonder if they will ever make working models of diesel engines based on the Yanmar and Kubota single cylinder engines - personally I think their designs are very nice, maybe that's asking too much...
Mr Zhou also dreams of this, he says; multicylinder etc. We will see :)
I can't wait for the second run of these. The quality and variety of the Chinese engines has exploded and there are so many exciting offerings coming up.
Hmm, maybe reconsider using exploded in that context
Any thoughts of using Jet A fuel? Google results: Jet-A is essentially an extremely high-quality diesel fuel, and indeed running a typical automotive diesel engine on Jet-A is likely possible.
Ahhhhh what a good idea, I will find some for it. I have used kerosine. I will check the lubricity. Kerosine is cleaner burning than diesel but less lubricity. Being a made-to-price "educational" model (and it has been) the piston in this is aluminium. Anyway I'll check this out, thanks. After reassembling, tightening, leak finding and tuning this I think I could build an engine kit by @niffi2 when he releases it, so I'm actually happy. Ish... and I still support Shiyi Zhou
I applaud you for the optimism. They are trying to make a diesel engine out of the "hot bulb" model... And you're doing their R&D for free (unless you're working for them now).
Yes! Hello Mr 212 at long last! How are you dude! "They" is Shiyi Zhou and yes Darren and I are kinda helping him with ironing out problems. I hope he can iron out and improve stuff. Then I hope he treats @Darren_Fawcett and I well. Says he will, free upgrades etc for us. So far he has seemed to be cool... Matt, your channel went "dead" and plenty of the guys miss your style...u ok man? Family good? My health took a dive for 18 months but ok now. Yeah, I don't get riled up by being mistreated by hobby suppliers, or money any more. This youtube thing isn't about money as you know... not for 99% of youtubers it's about our community. We could all be flat dead tomorrow. really nice to hear you're still out there
Hi Thomas. Great having your insights into small engine things. I wanted to ask about M92 engine. Have you ever added an oiler to the back of the cylinder, like in a real sized engine. My M92 has a small screw (I think to hold the cylinder sleeve) but could this be removed and a small oiler put in? Hope all that makes sense?
I tried this with the earliest Microcosm hit and miss engine and haven't tried it since. My tiny drill melted and jammed as I ignorantly tried to drill into the cylinder sleeve which I think is stainless steel, anyway, impervious to my skills at the time. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your idea, though. Jin's latest engines have oil pumps, different piston rings and do not need oil in the fuel like previous ones do
as retired marine engineer I would love to buy model diesel engine , but not yet as the manufacturers are not there yet
