For more than 175 years, the Smithsonian Institution (in Washington, D.C.) has been guided by its mission of “the increase and diffusion of knowledge.” The Institution was founded in 1846 with funds from the Englishman James Smithson (1765-1829) according to his wishes “under the name of the Smithsonian Institution. Collectively this world-renowned museum and research complex is made up of 21 museums and galleries, which includes the National Zoo. Smithsonian museums are a guide to the most fascinating aspects of our world. The museum collection contains more than 150 million objects, works of art and specimens altogether. So what is nature journaling? It is the regular recording of observations, perceptions, and feelings about the natural world around you. There are multiple techniques used to complete this process. Photography, poems, art, bark and fossil rubbings, diary-style notes are all ways to build a document of memories. Necessary for success is the freedom to welcome new discoveries when they happen.

The fabric of our cosmos, as we currently understand it, comprises three primary components: ‘normal matter,’ ‘dark energy,’ and ‘dark matter.’ However, Dr. Rajendra Gupta’s new research is turning this established model on its head. The newly-devised model stretches the galaxy formation time by a several billion years, making the Universe 26.7 billion years old. We will speak with Dr. Gupta.

Diamonds are formed about 100 miles or so below the surface of the Earth in the upper mantle. The combination of high temperature and high pressure is what is necessary to grow diamond crystals within the Earth.

The projects are then sent into the atmosphere by sounding rocket or scientific balloon. They lived during the Eocene and Oligocene epochs, approximately 38 to 16 million years ago. We will meet paleontologist Danielle Fraser, from the Canadian Museum of Nature.
