I didn't really notice before, because I usually watch the dub, but i think it's because he hit puberty (or his voice actor did), like he was a bit younger than his classmates and boy's voices mutate when they go through puberty. As for the smile, he got it back at the end, it was just the war with the villains taking its toll on him.
