For acclimatization, inoculum from running biogas plant was added in the digesters at 10% (v/v). Biogas production from Calotropis gigantea was compared with the control (buffalo dung). All digesters were run on buffalo dung feeding only for initial 40 days. To obtain 6% TS, 30 g buffalo dung was mixed with 90-ml water. From the 41st day onwards, 6 g buffalo dung was replaced with C. gigantea powdered leaves. Digested slurry (120 ml) was withdrawn daily from the digester. Results showed the favourable effect of co-digestion over the control. Significantly higher biogas production (109.82% increase) was recorded in test digesters than the control, suggesting that higher leaf nutrients provide sufficient nutrients to microbial community of test digesters. Daily biogas production during daytime (09.00 to 21.00 h) was higher compared to night time (21.00 to 09.00 h). It was 130.62% higher during daytime and 83.0% higher during night time in the test digesters over the control digester. Significantly lower methane content and significantly higher carbon dioxide content were observed in test digesters than in control digesters. Fertilizer value of produced biogas slurry in test digesters was also significantly higher than those of control digesters in terms of its available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content. The results illustrate that C. gigantea can be successfully used for biogas production with higher fertilizer value. In the olden days people use to put it in fields after harvesting and before ploughing for the next crop. The latex in the Calotropis is antibiotic. If it falls on skin,blisters develop. Also On RATHA SAPTAMI (festival Day) people put the leaves of Calotropis on shoulders and then take bath. Also if any thorn is struck in the leg,people put the latex of Calotropis and the thorn comes to the surface. In Punjab to remove the hair from skin of goats people put the haired skin in mud along with Calotropis leaves. The hair is removed after a week. Infact based on this principle,Central Leather Research Institute's Scientists isolated the pigment from Calotropis latex and patented it. Today this is the only chemical used to dehair the goat skin. Also in Groundnut(Peanut) fields "Red Hairy Cater Pillar" is a big menace. It comes out in the night and eats away the Groundnut leaves. In the day time it digs a hole and hides inside the soil. Local people put Calotropis leaves here and there in the Groundnut Fields. The Red Hairy Cater pillar after eating the leaves, the further regeneration is averted. Obviously the latex in the Calotropis must be playing the trick. I suggested to ICAR in India and FAO to carry out research on this in 70s itself. Calotropis is a care-free growth plant occurring on the Roadside and on the sides of Railway track.Cant this regenerative multiple use plant be put to good use. My Concept is “Leaf To Root Approach” of abundant available resource. My present Project: We have a Biogas plant since 30 years and have number of cattle in our Village. The slurry after dried is mixed with soil and used as natural manure for our mango and coconut trees. Since we have sizeable quantities of slurry,we are burying the leaves of calotropis under the slurry and water it now and then so that the plant leaves putrifies and mix up with the slurry. After a Month we will dig the slurry and putrified calotropis and make it as a mixture and dry it for a few days. Then the green manure will be put for our Mango trees(about 6 years old) and Coconut trees. Soil being the natural medium for plant growth, is comprised of mineral matter. In order to exploit these minerals, sufficient manures are applied to the soil by which adequate physical condition is provided favoring the biological changes and naturally, the chemical composition of the soil gets changed favorably. Along with these changes, soil structure will improve and the quantity of humus content, beneficial micro organisms and earthworms will also increase thus ultimately the soil attains fertility Calotropis on the Roadside Wild Growth Calotropis buried under slurry and being extended Biogas Slurry

I love the complete lack of safety in this video...Did no one ever tell these guys how absolutely dangerous it is to enter a pit like that without shoring up the sides or having graded sides. Getting into a pit deeper than 4' with straight cut sides is incredibly stupid....this is like one of those safety videos you watch about how NOT to do something. I keep waiting for the cave in....
