Alison is soooo much my sister!! The need for control! The perfect suburban persona! The anger boiling just under the surface that’s on a hairpin trigger turning into that viper tongue that she calls “hard truth” (but she doesn’t have all the information to actually know what the truth is). The various forms of eye rolling and nonverbal expressions of disgust. My sister! My brother is some weird cross between Diego, Vanya and Luther. One part mild narcissist; one part PTSD rage; one part cyborg with a couple loose screws; and somehow both paranoid and taking information at face value all at the same time. To be fair, I’m probably some combination of Klaus, 5, and Vanya. Dark inappropriate humor. The family screw up with ADHD, depression and anxiety. I have a habit of isolating myself. I’m not really part of the group anyway and at 45 everyone still treats me like I’m 4, so I get lectured a lot… Which usually makes me wonder how I’m related to these idiots. I can usually tell when someone of authority in the family finally notices patronizing hypocrisy coming from the rest of the family. “Why was that lecture necessary or even relevant? What was the point of that? Very over dramatic. Do you ever just feel like you can’t possibly be related to these people?” “My mantra at family gatherings is not to argue with stupid.”

I noticed that Five sort of coddles and babies Vanya/Viktor When he needs him to urgently understand something. Five, in a metaphorical way, sort of bends down to Viktor’s “eye level” in the way an adult guardian does with their kid, to explain to them what they need to understand. With the way Five holds Viktor’s shoulders, looks him in the eyes, and makes him look at him as well, and uses gentle words like “do you understand me?” and “we don’t have time for this.” to make it clear that what he’s saying is firm, but still compassionate of Viktor’s feelings.
