NYC Congestion Pricing Explained
There has been a lot of fuss on the internet over New York City's Congestion Pricing plan, with many people that are struggling to understand it. I hope my video helps everyone better understand what it means and why it's being implemented in Manhattan below 60th street.
New York City is the largest city in the U.S., with over 8 million residents in the city limits and nearly 20 million people in its metropolitan area. It’s also America’s densest city, with a population density of nearly 30,000 people per square mile spread across its 5 boroughs. With so many people packed into a relatively small space, it’s no surprise that NYC suffers from extreme traffic conditions. According to the INRIX 2023 Global Traffic Scorecard, New York City ranked #1 globally as the most congested city, with drivers losing an average of 101 hours annually to congestion.
In an attempt to reduce congestion, New York City is introducing congestion pricing. This policy aims to discourage driving while encouraging walking, cycling, and public transit. It also seeks to generate revenue to improve the subway system, particularly by making it more accessible to people with disabilities. But what exactly is congestion pricing, how does it work, and why is it happening now? I know a lot of people are struggling to understand congestion pricing, so stick around as I break it all down for you.

How Building Height is Measured (It’s more complicated than you think!)

I can't get it to work. It doesn't recognize the building I'm trying to measure. When I put the cursor on top of the building, it gives the same elevation as the surrounding ground.
Is the building that you are trying to measure rendered in 3D?

Thank you very much for this info!
The MTA have been squandering funds to improve the subway system for decades. Now, they want drivers to further line their pockets and nothing will improve. You cannot compare NYC transit to London, Stockholm or anywhere else. It is the dirtiest, most dangerous transit system in the world! I have not been on a subway since 2019 after witnessing 2 horrific events that year and Congestion Pricing cannot and will not force me to use it ever again. I just will not come into Manhattan. Since I live in NJ and work in Brooklyn and Queens, I'll go around which most people will do.
I definitely agree that the NYC subway needs to be safer and cleaner, and I also do agree with there being some corruption with the MTA. I share this frustration. I'd love for the US to have world class transit that is safe and clean, but it will take community, local efforts, and significant investment in safety and renovation for that to happen.
Manhattan cannot be like Europe it’s a different culture manhattan is not as bike friendly
Manhattan does have its own culture, but that doesn't mean that we can't make improvements. I don't think there's anything wrong with learning about and implementing some of the improvements that other cities around the world have made.
London cab driver says London traffic is just as bad if not worse
Delays due to bike bus lane and pedestrian plazas plus too many Uber vehicles which is a contradiction and now the Kathy hochul and MTA wants congestion pricing bad urban planning
You do raise a good point about Ubers. I did see that Uber and Lyft pushed for NYC congestion pricing with the belief that they can take advantage of it. I do agree that that would be a contradiction because the whole point is to have less cars, not more. However, in regards to your first point, it has been proven that bike lanes and pedestrianized areas do not cause congestion: www.planetizen.com/news/2024/10/132237-over-and-over-studies-show-bike-lanes-dont-cause-congestion#:~:text=Bike%20infrastructure%20tends%20to%20make,more%20revenue%20to%20local%20businesses.&text=In%20an%20article%20for%20CBC,do%20not%20increase%20traffic%20congestion.

ITS TRASH TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE THAT DRIVES IN NYC
I suggest exporting in 60 FPS and that way you'll have smoother image flow. 24 is more for movies. Also, if uploading in 4K, you should really try to look for only 4K images. I was watching in 720p and it was already noticeable. Having a fading effect in between every image makes it a bit more professional. Lastly, I don't know how picky they are about enforcing it, but SkyscraperPage's drawings are technically under their copyright. The original 2012 video just had the "silhouettes" of each building with a glow effect.

As a pennsylvanian, i STILL don’t understand why Reading, Allentown, and Lancaster aren’t included with Philadelphia metro area. If it was extended just 20-25 miles further to Lancaster, Berks, and Lehigh counties, the MSA population would boost by nearly 2 million people. Saying OKC is trying to make a statement by building this building is ridiculous being as it wasn't and still isn't okc's idea to begin with. California based company came up with the idea. Actually people in Oklahoma think it's kind of ridiculous. But if California wants to build it here more power to them. Maybe they know something no one else does and huge thing are about to happen here. A building of that magnitude is one hell of a tourist attraction. That's not the only big thing being built here numerous big things are happening here. Even a theme park to rival Disney world. Look it up and see what all's being built in our little medium sized city it's insane. I think big things are getting ready to happen here. Actually the theme park is being built closer to Tulsa. But it's still Oklahoma
@@richardshipman7106 It’s great to see all the development taking place in OKC. It probably would’ve been better to say the developer wanted to make a statement rather than the city, but my overall point still remains.
It’s whole point is to bring a massive economic impact, it will skyrocket tourism and lead to a larger growth rate, if you look at Dubai before the burj it was almost exactly the same as OKC, no one thought the burj was a good idea, but the year it was completed, it skyrocket tourism and tripled its growth rate, the same thing is expected to happen to OKC, and there are so many reasons as to why that’s possible and why it’s overall a good idea. More skyscrapers and buildings will build next to it for easy recognition, like what happened in Dubai.
@@-OAK- That absolutely could happen and would be great if it did. That being said, I think OKC (and Dubai for that matter too) should make sure to keep their economies diversified because tourism isn’t always stable.
@@jonesrmj well OKC is one of the most improving cities in the country, and it was also voted the best managed city a while ago, now it’s like top 5. It was also ranked the 16th best city to live in. So I think it’s good on that stuff, especially when it ranks as one of the highest in infrastructure. Tourism will lead to more money to the city to fix its problems, as well as more growth, that’s why tourism is focused on a lot by cities.
What makes you think OKC’s economy is not already diversified? The economic breakdown of Oklahoma City as of 2024 highlights the city’s diversified economy, with significant contributions from several key sectors: 1. Aviation and Aerospace: The largest sector, accounting for around 15-18% of the local economy, driven by Tinker Air Force Base and private-sector firms. 2. Energy (Oil & Gas): While still important, the direct contribution of energy to the workforce is smaller than often perceived, representing 7-10%. The sector has significant indirect effects on industries like manufacturing and construction. 3. Healthcare and Biosciences: This fast-growing sector contributes 15-20%, reflecting the city’s investments in health services and biotechnology. 4. Manufacturing: Approximately 5% of the economy, manufacturing in Oklahoma City focuses on machinery, metals, and food products. 5. Government and Military: Due to its role as the state capital and presence of federal employers like Tinker AFB, this sector makes up around 10-12% of the economy. 6. Logistics and Distribution: With its central location in North America, logistics accounts for 5-7% of economic activity. 7. Retail, Tourism, and Hospitality: This sector represents about 5-7%, supported by tourism and local retail growth. These estimates provide a broad view of how different sectors contribute to Oklahoma City’s economy in 2024, emphasizing its transition from an energy-dominated economy to a more diverse industrial base.
@@se777en73120 I didn’t say it wasn’t diversified, I said that they need to make sure they keep it diversified.
Here in 2024 and it just says “save data” and “channels” on the Wii menu option
Saying that ego is the main reason for Legends is naïve. There are multiple developments underway in OKC and since MAPS started OKC has been developing at a pretty high pace. OKC is growing at twice the national average and there’s multiple mid rise mixed use developments currently in the works. The tower won’t be built until 50% of the smaller buildings are leased. By then, the plans for the tower will likely have changed. I just don’t understand the general hate towards the project. When you consider what’s currently being developed and planned, legends certainly isn’t pointless. In addition to some added tourism, the point of the project is to attract developers. This may seem unconventional to some, but you have to build buildings if you want more of them..
@@MrMannyfresh78 I think that my video on the project is pretty well balanced. Yes OKC is growing fast, and I’m happy to see more development there, but a skyscraper of this size simply doesn’t make economic or practical sense there. The developer himself even mentioned that Legends Tower is about making a statement. That’s basically the point I was trying to convey in my video, as mostly everything I said was objective. My video in no way was negative towards the project. In fact, I even said I would be happy to see it get built because it could maybe help the US get back into the skyscraper race, which would be great to see as a skyscraper enthusiast.
Hope it gets built! Only 34 years ago, Chicago and New York City had the most impressive skylines on earth. Now, many cities in Asia have skyscrapers and skylines that are more exceptional than those in The USA. This building would help redeem American architecture. Also, it would attract tourists to OKC. I would travel from Toronto to OKC to see it.
@@scottwood928 It definitely would be cool to see the US build something taller!
As an engineer, I can safely say that there is no practical reason for the Legends Tower to be built. Skyscrapers themselves are quite difficult to build and maintain, and their large size can lead to its residents being isolated. Skyscrapers only really make sense in places with a lack of space, which is the opposite problem Oklahoma city is dealing with. A tall building would certainly look cool, but once the novelty wears off a series of mid-rises would be much more practical for the people living there.
@@mickmaster1478 Agreed! Pretty much exactly what I talked about in the video. Thanks for watching!
most of these supertall skyscrapers are not practical. They are built to "look cool," and for bragging rights. In my opinion, it would be a good draw for Oklahoma City , which does not much else to offer.
