This is weird. Some years ago I presented a non-academic "paper" on this subject for a small amateur history study group. The first thing I read on the subject was a fictionalised account of the life of one Roger Casement & his efforts to bring to light the rubber extraction methods used in both Congo and Putumayo, at that time a remote area of Peru. This was Mario Vargas Llosa's "The Dream of the Celt". As I think Hochschild explains, Casement was a British government envoy in the late 1890s to early 1900s and was tasked with preparing what became known as the Casement Report on the humanitarian situation initially in Congo, then more-or-less the same, at even more personal risk, in Putumayo. I then found that this report is now available free online, in English and French, on the website of The Gutenberg Press so I read it too. Subsequently, unable initially to find a copy of Hochschild's book in our public library system (because the original copies had fallen to pieces through use and the library no longer uses bookbinders apparently nor has a place to put old books), I also read the Van Reybrouck book to which Gilley refers. I don't have it in front of me of course but I retain a few notes I made such as: "p94: profit maximisation alpha & omega of it all. Physical violence in Congo countryside but structural violence extended to King. Arguably WORSE than East African slave trade" . "Horrendous consequences inc. crafts like ironmaking & woodcarving lost. Native pop. 'listless, enfeebled & malnourished' and very susceptible to illness..." The "King" referred to was of course Leopold. Eventually I read Hochschild's book and it was riveting but there are other sources of info which as far as I can see basically corroborate him. And BTW I don't remember his making any blanket claim of 10 million dead. I thought that was a maximum figure for those not only dead but given a hugely declining birthrate, were never born between say 1890 & ??1905. I'm not surprised to see criticism of the book (because there'll always be things to criticise in any such publication) but from my arguably limited qualifications & perspective I nonetheless dare to assert that Gilley goes much too far.

my grandfather kenneth robertson lost his life in the ituri forest. he. was searching for the okapi animal to photograph it for national geographic magazine. it has been so interesting to watch this video. it brings me closer to him, he was only 30 when he died. jean X

Ik beluister deze podcast voor de tweede keer, maar wat een grandioze vertelstijl en wat een verbeelding! Het is alsof je een vlieg bent die Leopold observeert. Dan vergeet ik nog de onophoudelijke ironie waarmee hij de grootsheidswaanzin en de vele andere slechte karaktertrekken van deze koning beschrijft. De taal van Op de Beeck is onberispelijk en helder. Perfect begrijpbaar voor Nederlanders maar een beetje exotisch door de woordkeuze en uitspraak die zeer Belgisch zijn. Tussen het praten door wordt er ook mooie (klassieke) muziek uit die periode gedraaid. Dit is genieten van begin tot eind.

About time the history books are updated with these facts…

Those « charity colonies » were a new look for an old institution : monasteries and gated/semi-gated religious communities like the Beguines. Those communities would offer shelter and protection to some specific profiles of poor people (kids, women,...) which in return had to observe strict rules and give free labor. The colonies of benevolence worked the same way + a little capitalist and a little colonialist touch : - « salvation through labor » made the workforce of the colonies of benevolence very cheap and so, very interesting as an enterprise. - there's a reason why those colonies mostly became penitenciaries at some point : their design, location and social project was very close to a jail/asylum : a closed area where to enclose and « educate » the poors, far from the eyes of the honest people. In the « real colonies » of America/Africa/Asia/Oceania, the same logic was applied to the « indigenous neighborhoods » of big colonial hubs : gated, far away, highly watched, full of missionaries, and with more and harsher laws to observe than outside.
