Frazzled Dad's Minis
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 4 ธ.ค. 2023
Join me and learn how to improve your miniature painting skills!
I'm Jim, and this channel is about me working on improving my miniature painting skills. I dove into mini painting in November, 2022, and have worked hard at learning how to get better.
I paint a wide range of things including Warhammer (mostly Warhammer proxies like Ravaged Star and 3D prints), some armor pieces, sci-fi, fantasy, and some display figures. I enjoy the technical aspects like learning non-metallic metals, but I also love learning about fundamental color theory. I'm working hard to improve my basic skin painting techniques, especially when I'm working on display busts.
I do some 3D printing as well and occasionally post on my experiences there.

Competition Time: My Squidmar Open Piece!
I decided to take a leap and work on a piece for the Squidmar Open. In this video, I'll walk you through taking a favorite piece of mine and significantly reworking it to submit to my first major conference: the Squidmar Open.
I talk about carefully evaluating the piece, getting feedback, PRIORITIZING what to work on, and getting the work done.
There's a lot of good stuff here, including four or FIVE variations of reworking the Non-Metallic Metal of the axe. I also do some nice diorama work using bits from the incredible folks at Diorama Pressipe.

Painting a Mini in One Hour

Putting harsh time constraints on yourself can be a good thing! In this episode I talk about about why I decided to limit myself to an hour, what I hoped to learn, and what I got out of the self-imposed challenge. This episode is over an hour long. If you like painting you most certainly want a 3d printer.
indeed! I’ve had an Elegoo Saturn 2 for close to two years. I’ve had a Bambu P1S for at least six months. They are a big part of what I do!
Just bought the game and now im watching videos on how to paint minis and these looks sick! Just bought some supplies and am excited to give it a try! Hopefully i can do the figures some justice when painting them! Slow baby steps 😂 Do you use regular acrylic paint or speed paint for the final touches/details for the minis?
It's great to hear you got the game. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! I only used speed paints on the characters, cultists, and Amorphous Psions. Everything else was regular acrylics.
Oh, might have used speed paints as a part of one or two others--but most of the monsters were a majority of acrylics.
@ yes i did enjoy it very much! Havent had this much fun on a board game for quite some time! Alright! Thanks so much! Hopefully i can replicate as least 5% of what yours looks like with speedpaint! I dont have much skill in painting but i sure gotta try! Anything is better than a dull mini! 😅
@@Ankei74u Good luck. You hit it on the head: small steps, and have a good time!
You really did make the piece so much better. The paint changes and the touches of green looks amazing 😊😊😊😊
Thank you so much for the kind words!!
@ you are very welcome 🤗
Great stuff, painting through mine right now too. Azathoth I did mostly with an airbrush, except for final highlight and eyes, cause I would've driven myself crazy trying to finish him the traditional way 😅
Great to hear from someone else who's done this set!! I need to get more work in with my airbrush on figures. I only use it for OSL-like work or NMM on large surfaces. Thank you for a good poke in that direction!
Good to see your progress, Jim!
Thank you! I sure appreciate the support!
Not worth the struggle, just use things that work like ATOM paint, IONIC paint (also from AMMO brand), and Pro Acryl. Don't waste time with paint that fights you. Thanks for the video!
ps: I have the Broken Anvil paints, I had the same issue with the greens and I really do not like the finish...they are a muddy paint. if I feel bored of my paints that actually work with NO struggle, then I will break these little craps out and play around again.
thank you very much for watching and your spot on comments. Months later, there are a couple of these paints that I go back to. But I’ve pulled most of them off my shelf and don’t fool with them anymore. I’m also glad to get confirmation about the trouble with the greens. thanks for watching!
Totally with you on not breaking it up. I was selling an army of minis once and was willing to break it up... thatvresulted in me habing bits and pieces of it laying around for years that i couldn't sell. I finally sold it all at sugnificant loss with a binchbof other stuff to a big used gane store, and some of it i just threw in the trash after it wasnt useful to practice painting on anymore (not the level of detail i was working with). Of course, now, i tend to think most of the Games Workshop stuff is oversculpted and not customizable enough, so I'm looking for a hapoy medium. Unfortunately, my kid needs orthodontics, so miniatures have to wait. Probably for a looong time, lol.
thank you for the confirmation about keeping everything together! thanks also for watching!
That sounds all well & good until you actually realize that the number of people willing to shell out $700 USD for an entire pre-painted non-warhammer army is VERY small. I hear your experience with gradually selling off an army @nrais76 ... but at least you sold SOME of it, you managed to recoup some level of expenses & reduced the size of the collection a bit over time. Frazzled Dad will likely not ever sell this very expensive, very large combined package of stuff people will feel guilty about re-painting or using for kitbashes. This keep it together mentality is really a rose-tinted-glasses bias from the seller side as to what you WANT to happen, not actually thinking from the buyer side as to WHAT WILL ACTUALLY SELL.
Had a similar moment last year. After a couple of years of making a point of mostly only painting old models that meant something to me and finally accepting that I have more models than years left I decided to cull some of my collection. All my Rackham stuff, done with it, time to get rid of it and it's now pretty much all gone. I'd never really got going with painting much of it and had had a few different "new starts" with trying to figure out what I was doing with the models. The real tipping point was realising that as I was looking for things to sell off there were some figure ranges that I looked at and thought "I'd like to paint that" like my Void models but with the Rackham stuff it was more "that would look good painted". Void stayed, Rackham went.
Thanks for sharing that! I'm glad to hear I'm not alone in the desire to clean out stuff that just doesn't work for me. Your phrase "I'd like to paint that" is something more of us hobbyists should remember! Thanks for watching!
how about i trade you some games workshop stuff'.
I appreciate the offer, but that’s not something I’m looking to do. Thank you, though!
Finding a proper canvas is a necessary step in your painting journey. This will happen for sure in the future. Lovely video!
you are so very correct! Thank you for the kind comment and watching the video.
That was definitely a good intro lol
Thanks! I had a great time making it. :)
Someone will be very happy with those models. Good Job Jim
Thank you! It's a great set, just totally not my style.
doesn't speak for the brand, if bottles lose the top part...
Yep. Broken Anvil had a LOT of problems with their paint KS. I did a separate video on them. th-cam.com/video/P1McvI0-YFY/w-d-xo.html Some paints ae great, some are bad. The company is awful.
Also, have you done any figures that I missed seeing done?
Yes! I did Srelk which is a nasty dragon contributed to LOK by Archvillian Games. That video is at th-cam.com/video/cF_NeLXYMjk/w-d-xo.html I've done other pieces, but not videos on them.
Look, I hate what happened to this project on the physical end, but that doesn't mean that it didn't produce some incredible stuff in STL, and seeing the minis printed and painted is rather epic. Thanks for doing this!
There were indeed a WHOLE LOT of great STLs! I'm hoping things will eventually fall together for the physical stuff. It's a shame they hooked up with such a lousy partner. 😕
I'll whole heartedly second Once in a Six Sides community. It does require a patreon/buymeacoffee membership, but i think theres a discord only tier thats pretty cheap. First place i go of the discords i'm a member of for painting stuff
Yes, it is a fee based community, but I’m so very happy to support him. It’s a great bunch of folks there, too!
Great video! Wasn't expecting a leadership lesson in there! I had no idea you wrote a book!
Thank you, friend! I also wrote a 1300 page book on tools for software developers that nobody bought or read. 🤣😅😂
Man, I love this. I have met some folks who need to take some feedback on their feedback. Great video as always!
That's so kind of you, Thanks so much!
Happy New Year! Keep kicking butt!

Just saw the shout-out from the 6 side. So I am here. I think this is an excellent starting point. Looking at painting 40k proxies for my own enjoyment, off my own 3d printers.
Thank you! Glad you're along for the ride!
Great job Jim
Thank you!
Well done on the paint job/review!
Thank you! This is such a great figure!
Nice work! i might have missed it, Did you say how long it took to paint these guys up?
Thank you! This was perhaps six to eight hours total over three days. These figures paint very quickly thanks to the great design.
Great work Jim
Thank you! I always appreciate your kind words.
Shane is freaking awesome. I've been subbed to Dungeons and Dreadnaughts for a while now (since before they were called Dungeons and Dreadnaughts) and his models are great. His discord community is also one of the coolest discord communities I've been a part of. I highly recommend his stuff.
I can't remember when I subbed to his stuff. I'm pretty sure I found him from Once in a Six Side's Discord. I just joined several of his servers and am enjoying the communities there. Thanks for watching!
Great to see the full process of these guys! You did a great job as did @DungeonsNDreadnoughts
Thank you! These are some great models. They were a lot of fun to build and paint.
Thanks for the awesome paint job and superb review! Make sure to subscribe everyone!
You're welcome! I hope your campaign sells a million. :)
those blends are smoooth considering you used the brush. great job as always!
Thank you! I stayed with the brush specifically to get some practice reps on on transitions. I appreciate you noticing!
Thanks for posting on hobby chat or else I woulda missed this!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
This is an epic model Jim. Great job putting all together.
Thank you so much! This was a lot of work, but a lot of fun. :)
I just realized I said I didn't use an airbrush on any part. THAT'S WRONG! 😀 I used an airbrush for the glowy eye effects on the skulls!
I'm not worthy 🥲 Thank you Frazzled Dad! The mini turned out great and that attitude of just getting it done and detaching from the outcome really can produce the best results 🤘
Thanks for the hard work you put in to build up such a great community!
"lovely chill community" 😂😂 I see you're leaving out some of the weaponized autism lol Also, dad over here just rocking an infinity when my monkey brain is still struggling with an ultra that literally does most of the work for you 😆
I have two young adult children on the spectrum. I just move on past certain things... That Infinity is my third airbrush. I use it for precision work--it makes me look way better than I really am. 🤣 Thanks for watching!
Awesome work Jim You improve with every piece.
Thank you for the kind words!
Love this! Great showcase of OSL. The new camera is great I feel like I'm seeing you in HD now
Thank you! The new camera is fussy to work with, but I'm happier with the results!
Awesome, thank you for sharing !!
You're welcome! It's a great piece!
Really cool.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Your struggles are why I do not kickstart certain products anymore. There is just too much room to wiggle and have the final product not be what was advertised. Plus too much time passes that the product you kickstarted might not be the best product available anymore. Good vid, good analysis.
You're spot on. I backed this right when I'd just started painting a couple of years ago. I have one more paint KS that I backed, also a couple years ago. That one is also badly managed and far delayed. Never again. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn. Great job slaying this grey monster and I must say, I dig your musical choices : PS: I'm convinced you shoot the whole intro to flex on that garden
Thanks for noticing the music! I get my stuff from Bensound.com, and I really enjoy finding neat stuff to edit in! LOL re: My garden. I've had a pretty good year for tomatoes and some greens this year, but my huge pepper crop got hit by frost and didn't produce much. 😭
Great Recap! so good to see this from start to finish!
Thank you!
Wow Jim, Great job... Bet your looking forward to some smaller models for a bit He looks awesome!
Thank you! I am indeed looking forward to smaller pieces!!

Looks awesome Jim. Love the undertones...
Thank you!
I painted one for.my friend Joe during the initial campaign for that game. It has been years now. I remember bringing it to the shop when it was done and everyone freaking out. I did the columns with blue and white power in the cracks. It was great fun painting it.
Thanks for the comment! It's cool to hear from someone who's painted one! I'm working on red and blue glows for the runes. I'm pretty happy with how they've turned out. I'm literally editing the second chapter right now, and I'm deep into the part painting the runes. I hope you catch that version when I release it next week!
Wow! He's so so so big Good job Jim
Thank you! This really is a fun piece to work on.

You mean in under four seconds. 🤣 I thought about that bit right after I unboxed this beast. I knew I could get a great gag when I started filming...
