Hmm so I have the full text characters filled in, not contoured/ stroke, when I do the trim path animated it fills it in weird and doesn't follow the shape of the letter when filling it in. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I have this same question. I'm new to After Effects and am trying to animate a logo. Would like my solid letters to 'write in' but I'm getting the same weird fill in.

A way I figured out how to do the other night was to create text layer of the text and make the letters red, then create a separate shape layer on top, only stroke (in white), and use the pen tool to trace out the letters that are in red. You'll have to adjust the stroke size until it fits the font of the characters of the text in the background. Then create a trim path for each shape layer from 0 to 100%. You can find that by drop down of the layer and the play symbol that says "animate" will have a section of effects, trim path should be near the bottom. It's tedious but I was able to do it successfully.

At 4:40 your description is quite incorrect. A PAL "Frame" is 625 "Lines" Each "Field" (of the Alternate Lines) is 312.5 Lines and the "Lines" of each "Field" are "interlaced". In both "Fields" the "Phase" of the colour signal for each scanned "Line" is the reverse of the previous and successive "Line". Hence, the transmitted colour signal is NOT altered "very slightly" each "Line", it is completely REVERSED. (Hence - Phase Alternate Line) In the receiver, this reversal of phase is countered by reversing the way in which the colour signal is "decoded" for each alternate "Line". Hence, if there is a "phase shift" in transmission, the phase shift for one line will be cancelled out by the reverse of this in the next line. In a "Simple" PAL receiver, these Colour Changes between lines can be perceived as what has been called a "Hanover Blind" effect. However, apart from early PAL receivers, most PAL receivers include a "Delay Line". This delays the Colour signal the from each line the exact length of time of one scanned line and mixes the previous colour with that in the next line. This results in the colour of each line being the average of the colour received for two reversed Phased alternate lines. If there is a phase shift in transmission this will then NOT result in the wrong colour being displayed but it WILL result in a reduced "saturation" of that colour. Averaging the colour of two lines reduces the "vertical definition" of the colour signal.. This does not much matter, since the "horizontal definition" of the colour signal is NOT a high as the Monochrome transmission. With all pre-digital colour TV transmissions, what is actually seen is a Monochrome picture where "areas" have been "filled in" with the appropriate colour. The "detail" of the collour is much less than that of the Monochrome picture.

Using a png-Sequence in general but especially as a proxy format is a horrible idea, as the PNG file format is notoriously slow to process. Tif, EXR, or even JPEG are better options.

West Germany had PAL and East Germany had SECAM. That was a political decision. There were no PAL decoders to buy in East Germany, so the TV program from West Germany could only be seen in black and white. In West Germany there were TVs that supported both standards, so that both programs could be seen in color. If a black and white film was shown in East Germany, the color information was completely switched off. With PAL this wasn't necessary. Around 1990, East Germany switched from SECAM to PAL. That meant that the old GDR TVs only showed b/w. The channel grid was always consistent in both parts. France also had SECAM, but the sound carrier was a little different there.
