How to make a knife blade black
In this video I go over a few ways that I make knife blades black. There are a lot of ways out there. I use mainly carbon steels and so this may not transfer to stainless steels and may require different chemical processes. I do know that a popular way in which other knife makers make blades black or their guards is with blueing salts please do research on this before attempting. With carbon steel you can also etch it in ferric chloride acid. I know a few makers when making Damascus or cu-Mai they etch after high polish sanding and then poly coat it.

Forging a kiridashi / edc tool
มุมมอง 79614 วันที่ผ่านมา
Using a farriers rasp I forge a kiridashi shaped edc tool for daily tasks where I would normally use a box cutter. I also make the sheath for it in this video. Enjoy. Heat treat: bring to orange color, quench in canola, wait 10 seconds, then quench in water. Temper to 400 with torch. #blacksmithing #homestead #blacksmithshop #diy #blacksmith #handmade #blade #bladesmith #bowieknife #bushcraft

If you heat up the blade it takes the bluing better. Not working level hot. Maybe 100 degrees. But make sure you’re working in a well vented area at that point.
Hmmm, 🤔 I’ll have to try that! Thanks!
Every time I lost something at home. My wonderful wife helps me finding by tell me it’s likely where I put it down. Love the hammer.
Same. “Honey did you move this?”
turned out awesome! Looking forward to the tools video
@@khildrak sweet. I did a test run on some tools the other day and they turned out good. So ima about to gear up to make one.
Cool little blade
@@Marc-qo1gz thank you
Really nice knife
Thank you!
I notice how the face of the hammers are peened. They have been used before! Probably several thousands of times !! Black smithing is almost a lost art. I have been told the key is getting your tempering correct! Those belt sanders are time savers..... That is a good looking knife!! Thanks for the video sir!
They have been used a ton. Tempering, patience, and hard work. It has been a very fun journey for me. Thanks!
Awesome video nice little knife
@@Marc-qo1gz thank you
Beautiful sharp little bugger! Merry Christmas!
@@StevenFromTexasO.o thanks, merry christmas
😘😎👍👍
When is he going to forge or use an anvil and hammer sanders are not forging.
@@victordayrider8554 Restart, try again. Who is the “he” you are referring to. The title says making a survival knife. Sometimes you grind knives sometimes you forge them. If you look into my other videos you will see a lot of hammer and anvil action not everyone following my channel has a hammer , anvil , and forge they are expensive tools. So the channel is built around many different makers.
Well it looks like the medal is not the only thing being “forged” into something special….got an expert and star in the making as well. Way to go Hagen (& dad)!
Thank you! He said thank you too.
Gonna make some of these now. Great video.
@@theriversexperience9383 I’ve got two more videos then I want to collab on a blade I wanna make.
Very Cool!! Good Job!!
Sick ring! Keep up the good work!
So very proud for him! Way to go "Big'un" ❤
Thanks
Awesome video
Thanks!

You never know when a red or blue electrolyte juice drink will need to be slashed in half do you ?
@@richardschneider4775 😂 yea
Congratulations on your new home and shop! It's awesome, and I'm really happy for you and your family! Not sure what state you are located, but hopefully it is warm where you are, and you have a longer growing season! I live in Minnesota, and unfortunately our garden is short lived! I'm glad you are settling in, and I can't wait to see your future videos, my brother! Thanks for sharing, Bob Gore, Metalstorm Forge! 💙🙏🏻☯️🔥😎👍🏻
Thanks! Texas. Gardening is a passion of mine I enjoy it. We shall see what winter brings. I’ve added some new things to the garden so I’ll be doing another update soon on it. Round here hydration is the key, heat around here will kill your plants. Unless it’s okra stuff grows like crazy lol.
Your new place looks great. Congrats
Thanks
👍✌️⚒️
It is skullcrasher not tracker...
Where is the forging
At one point in the past the name was changed to be more “catchy” I’m not doing the catchy thing anymore so I changed it from forged to making. Thanks for the feedback I would have missed the name. Have a great week!
very cool how much? bet with a slightly double edge at end would be a nasty throwing knife :D good work dude

Logan This is Gerald Pynch, I have some light gray pigmented sealer I'll give you for your shop. It will give you a brighter floor to work with. I'm in the Hwy 30 business park in College Station. Suit 1404. Let me know!
Glad to see you back. Tucker and I have been wondering where you have been!! Love the kids in there too.

Great content; where is that tracker from your video now?
@@deoppressoliber1282 I don’t know, someone bought it, said it had an issue then had there bank take the money back. Never got the knife bank 🤷♂️ …people are weird.
@@Brackinforgeandhomestead Ugh! That's unfortunate! I really dig that raw look; reminds me of the movie version.
Its proper name is Russon Tracker.
👏👏👏
This is awesome!
Thanks

Filthy man
The knife design is beautiful and suitable for camping.
Thanks
Several Bronze Age Middle Eastern civilizations used the khopesh.
Overall, nice video! I just wish that you added some commentary to talk about what you are doing and why, since this was labeled as a beginner knife making video. Without the commentary, a beginner might not understand what you are doing, or why. Again though, great video I really enjoyed it.
Excellent work❤
*I don't like a knife that looks like a raspel in the slightest. It can be made from a file, but traces of origin should be carefully removed. Are you always this lazy?*
I've made a pair of these once. Unfortunately they were a bit too unwieldy, kept flopping around.
Dope AF results, @we_build_it! Now it needs an equally dope sheath to complete the package! (If you haven't already made one!)

I'm working on some life stuff right now. but will hope to have some more out soon.
Thanks for the reminder, kid.
That was one of my favorite farrier rasp knife builds, and an even cooler back-story!
