My name is Ivanina and I am an amateur bookbinder based in Bulgaria. My journey with bookbinding started 2 years ago. Since then I have been fascinated by the process, the elegance and the beauty of this craft. I am mainly inspired by 16th-19th century bindings that shaped the way books look today. Contemporary bindings are now dominating the industry and while I am ready to embrace the novelties of our age, I still want to preserve the pulchritude of the past.
The channel is dedicated to the video journals I shoot while working on each piece. Video editing is not my strong suit, but I hope my bindings and the hard work I put into them can compensate for this lack of skill.
Thank you visiting my channel! Have a great day!

Traditional leather binding by hand
The first signs of bookbinding are dated back to the 1st century AD from the Roman Empire. Instead of scrolls and wax tablets, the Romans folded the papyrus and vellum and attached the sections together, inventing the so-called codices. By the 6th century AD, the scroll and wax tablet had been completely replaced by the codex in the Western world. Bindings from this period onwards were bound between hard covers, with pages made from parchment folded and sewn onto strong cords or ligaments that were attached to wooden boards and covered with leather. At first their spines were flat, the rounded and backed techniques first appeared in books from the 15th century. Luxury medieval books had leather covers decorated, often all over, with tooling, blind stamps (used in this video), and often small metal pieces of furniture (straps or clasps). They were used to secure the wooden covers of medieval books because vellum would react to humidity by swelling. During the same period when the rounded spine first appeared, techniques for fixing gold leaf under the tooling and stamps were imported from the Islamic world. The gold-tooled, as well as blind stamping, leather binding has remained the conventional choice for high quality bindings for collectors.
Since then a lot has changed, a lot has been learned. Nowadays, books are bound in many different styles, varying according to their value, age or the use to which they are to be put. In this video I show the making of a traditional binding that includes sewing on cords, spine rounding, backing and enforcing with linen, board preparation, leather paring and blind stamping. I hope you enjoy it! If you do, I would really appreciate if you like the video and subscribe.

Making a leather binding by hand

Another blank journal made entirely by hand. The leather I am using is a vegetable tanned black calf skin. You can find a link to my supplier below, as well as info about the brass finishing tools. The paper is 100gsm, unlike the 80gsm I use in my previous bindings. The clicking sound at the end comes from the stove I use to heat the tools. The tattoo on my finger is just a Harry Potter referen...
Rebinding an old book at home

Yet another bookbinding video journal of me binding with the only difference I tried something I have never done before this time. The video captures the full rebinding process of a book I recently read - Arch of Triumph by Erich Maria Remarque. A great deal of the sewing was thorn, some pages were falling out, if not the whole signature. One of the headbands was missing and some pages had some...
Bookbinding from start to finish: The forest collection

This is my newest collection of three leatherbound journals. The three pieces are named Maple, Birch and Oak after the onlays I've chosen for them. As you might have guessed, I was inspired for the design during a walk in the forests near my hometown. The binding took me nearly a month for the whole set. Some parts of the video are inaudible and some have really quiet ambient sounds. If you tho...

The video showcases the making of a full leather bound album made to order. The whole process took me approximately two weeks. The leather used for this binding is a veg tanned goatskin, the headbands are sewn with a cotton thread and the tooling is done with heated brass tools. #bookbinding #handmade #asmr Feel free to visit my Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/Bookshelf4 IG: bookshel...
The solitude of bookbinding | Handmade full leather binding

This is a compilation of videos I shot while making my newest journal. The format of this binding is A6, bound in vegetable tanned purple goat skin. The process starts with paper folding which is later sewn by hand. The block is then backed to compensate for the spine swell, the paper is trimmed and sanded for a smoother edge. The headbands are sewn with cotton thread over a leather cord. At la...
