I’m sorry to say you math ain’t mathing. As you will be over your gcm if you max out the trailer and tow vehicle. As the gvm and atm combined is over your legal gcm. Either you’re reading the wrong numbers or the people that weighted you explained it wrong. As your legal GCM is 6.4t from ford. And your GVM max from ford is 3.35t and the van max weight of 3.3t comes to a GCM of 6.65t. So I’m not sure if your understanding of your weights is accurate. Or no one did the maths before filming? But you might get yourself in a real pickle. And that’s why 90%+ of caravans on the road of over weight. As people think they can load up the car and van without realizing they are over there GCM.

You don’t know what you don’t know……I have a friend that has an American truck and his wife has the new V6 wild track ranger ,I asked him how they compare, his comment Was I forget when I get in the Ranger and I think what’s wrong with this thing, you can’t compare the two he said.

A bit late watching this. I am interested in knowing what the max rear axle load is for the ranger and what rear axle load was measured? Do you have those figures? Good video thanks for making it. Every caravanner should get weighed but I bet a large percentage have no idea.

One more thing to take into consideration is the axle limits front and rear of your tow vehicle as you can be under your max GVM with the caravan on but because of the load on the tow ball you can exceed the rear axle limits

A great looking caravan. I would have gone for 2shock absorbers on each side simply for the size and possibility the weight you are carrying with your water tanks and grey water tank but that’s just my opinion. I’ve seen many caravans your size with 2 shocks on each side

Interesting video and well done explaining how the weights system for towing works. Unfortunately, many people out there who may get their vans and cars weighed may think, "oh goody, I have 500kg to spare - I can throw in more junk...". Me, I like to keep things as light as possible. What with diesel over $2/l and the general cost of stuff continuing to rise, anything to help fuel economy has to be a plus, right? Plus, it makes the overall rig safer, I guess. My PX3 3.2l Ranger tows a 2.5t van (2.8t ATM). Its ATM when I weighed it came in at around 2.6t with the Ranger at 2.7t or thereabouts. With a 6t GCM all up it's around 5.4t I think it was. (these figures aren't exact - I'm going from memory here) I'd much rather have that leeway than to push it. The Ute struggles as it is. On the flat, easy peasy, cruise at 100 if conditions are calm. Hit a hill of an decent length and it's down to 75km/h, so it does struggle. Remember too, your towball mass (TBM) may be say, 250kg, but the load that it places on the vehicle is much higher due to the lever effect, moment arm, that sort of thing. And that plays heavily into how your front axle load allows solid steering on the vehicle. That 10% figure gets used a lot. But no-one can tell me where it originated and why that particular number? My unladen rear axle weight went up around 450kg once the van is attached. And the TMB scale said 270kg. Of course, we can argue that the scales may be inaccurate, but the corresponding reduction of weight on the front seemed to bear these figures out. When I had the Jeep Grand Cherokee (5 years of faultless driving in case the Jeep Haters want to lay the boots in), it suffered badly from a light front end, making it scary to tow. I had to installed a Hayman Reece hitch and weight distribution system which improved steering and stopped the porpoising that I'd experience on rough roads (which most of them seem to be these days). The Ranger is more stable in that regard so I don't need it. But it too, adds around 30kg or more to the back end weight so that has to be factored in when doing the sums.

Up until 3 weeks ago our plan was a new Defender 110 P400s one of the few big 4x4s with a real payload. But stuff happens and our current tow vehicle had a problem. The bank balance at the time didn't allow for the Defender and the one we wanted was an 8 month wait. I could have saved the extra in that time... But... that didn't solve the immediate need for a new tow vehicle. The requirement's were needed to be 3500kg towing with a good payload. Had to be a 6 pot diesel or petrol (the Defender was petrol). If you put aside brand bias and just look at the numbers and price the V6 Ranger is very hard to go past. So once the Ranger was decided on I had people saying it will take a year to get one. One morning on the phone ringing around CQ dealers (Not Gladstone) I found 3 ready to go. And one on the boat that was exactly the car we wanted. A Blue V6 Wildtrak with a factory fitted canopy and Premium Pack. to that I asked for an anderson plug and the ARB 140L long range tank. The Defender idea isn't dead but the Ranger will do for now.

Did you do your axle weights?

I have just sold my Next Gen Ranger V6 Diesel due to the tech doing my head in and the lack of room in the rear for the kids & as for the Tow/Haul mode that keeps it in a lower gear chewing the diesel I think the programming needs work Try the manual mode and you will save $$$ on fuel And as for the sledge Not nice as I purchased a Ram that has turned out to be a fantastic tow vehicle with heaps of room for the kids and no more beeping lol And the compensating comment Has hit me hard and I mean really hard The thought of having a small snake that would fit in my old Rangers tiny seat comfortable really turns me on 😊 I really do wish it did So not all Ram owners are purchasing for the reasons in your head It’s more of a necessity.

Your take on this made a fun change from the multitude of serious deadpan car reviews and comparisons out there. You seem a lovely fun couple and you have made a great choice with the new Ranger. My daughter and son in law have picked up their new Everest Sport just this week. Beautiful wheels. My wife and I tow a 2600kg van with a 2.8 Prado and we are completely happy with what we have. I wasn't in the least offended. Love your sense of humor. Well done, enjoy the car and van and whatever holiday trips you can manage with that gorgeous little boy of yours.

This has to be a joke. What is you rear axle rating? Can you tow a 4t van? I doubt it. The title should be the owners of these can't afford a US truck.

We love our next gen WT ranger. Tows our van like a dream and would not swap it for anything. Heaps of torque, great on fuel and comfortable to drive. Plus no issues. Great tow vehicle.

Did you need a Gvm upgrade to tow?

Thanks for sharing a good video. Yes, it is a real nuisance not having your van at home as it is with no shed or carport for storage. I store my van 2.2 km from home at my Daughters place and put a cover over it. So that's our real bugbear is taking our gear over to the van and removing the cover, removal is relatively easy but putting it on is not.

Who knew it tows 3.5 ton, couple of adults and kids, plus some gear - legally....

If you have tow vehicle…that vehicle must be capable of towing the gvm weight of the vehicle its towing. Most off road caravans at gvm are more than a ranger can tow. So no, its not the ultimate

im towing a 2.3 T van around Oz with the BiTurbo but would prefer the extra torque & weight of the V6 that is good for up to 2.5T anymore than that i would be going for the wider track vehicles for stability that you mentioned

I’ve towed with a Grand Jeep Cherokee, Y62 Patrol, previous V6 Amarok and now a RAM 1500. All have their pros and cons but quite simply the bigger the tow rig, the better and safer the driving experience. Glad you’re happy with the Ranger but based on the vehicles above, and what we have driven, the Patrol and RAM are better and I would place the current Ranger as an equal to the previous V6 Amarok. Oh and drop the references to male appendages cause the people that mention it are most of the time the people with the problem or not getting enough of it.

What a load of rubbish. If you tow anything 3.5t and over, which many vans these days are, the Ranger can't do that. Hence why many choose an American truck. You can't just come out with a blanket statement saying the Ranger is the best option for everyone. As far as small bits of the anatomy, methinks you may know a lot about that.

I like you was very impressed with the new ranger’s spec and power and torque. And went really close to parting with the money UNTIL I seen one pulling into Mitta Mitta caravan park and absolutely loved the look of ranger and van . Going over talking to the driver and letting him know how impressed I was with his rig and asking what he thought of it and had he had any issues with it ? I was shocked to learn he was on the third motor already and had less than 12k on the vehicle 🤬🤯all fixed by FORD under warranty so other than not having his vehicle for over two months he was still pretty happy about the way he was treated and the vehicle abilities. BUT it did make me reconsider my purchase until I’d done my investigation. Then some months later I found another owner in Myrtleford and asked him if he had any issues so far and once again problems after problems,so no I haven’t brought a Ranger,such a shame really because they looked so good. My big concern is what will happen when your warranty runs out or the dealers get sick of repairing them and start to try to avoid warranty claims. Please feel free to make another clip once you’ve reached 50k and elevate my concerns. ❤️🙏👁️👁️😎😇🐕‍🦺

Thanks guys for a good intelligent and common sense analysis - I can’t emphasise enough how important this set of metrics needs to be understood by the general towing community - with more rigs on the roads now (eighty percent illegal according to road authority reports) the police blitzes will increase to maintain safety on the roads for everyone - a NSW driver was jailed for six years after he lost control of his overweight rig downhill on the way to Port Macquarie killing his wife and another family member - drivers should also undergo mandatory training for towing caravans - stay safe and enjoy the journey.

Thanks guys, very entertaining. I think it really comes down to personal preference as these modern vehicles all have different features and bells and whistles. That said, you haven’t convinced me to downgrade from my 300 series to a Ranger/VW.😂

The best Ford I owned was a BF2 XR6 Turbo ute Craig Lowndes Edition… A Ford Ranger is the last thing I’d be spending money on, especially the first model produced. Engine, transmission c, oil cooler issues and an engine originally designed and used in Land Rover TD5s ..

Well produced video. I've been a Mitsubishi fan for decades and owned Landcruisers but when I'm now looking at upgrading our van and tow vehicle the Ford stands head an shoulders above the rest. They've really considered the needs of towing when developing this vehicle. Happy travels.
