I was the night manager at the Burger King in Portsmouth NH. It was around 7pm when the main office called from Manchester and told me to close. I was the only employee there at thst time. Just before the office called a police cruiser came through the drive thru and told me they had closed the General Sullivan bridge going to Dover NH where I lived so that meant I was spending the night at the restaurant. It was less than an hour and the power went out. It was a long cold scary night in that place listening to the wind howl all night in the cold.

May the RTS buses, Washington Street El and Hawker Siddeley #12 Main Line cars rest in heavenly peace. 😢😭 These were retired by 2009, but the 1994/95 ones remained in service until 2017 with the last run on December 29, 2017, ending 23 years of service. Its the same as it was back in 1987, new trains still on old tracks, only difference is the HS 01200s were new trains on old tracks back then and now the CRRC 1400s are new trains on old tracks .

On July 12, 2024, the last of the hawkers were trucked away from wellington and maintenance facility to be scrapped at costello dismantling company in wareham. They began being scrapped in late 2022. The last set of hawkers ran on August 19, 2022, after 41 years of service. The orange line train that caught fire on the mystic river bridge in between wellington and assembly in July was “the end of the line” for the hawkers, or simply “the last straw”.

The four-car consist for the inaugural run on the newly opened Southwest Corridor on Monday, May 4, 1987 were cars 01201, 01200, 01248 and 01249.

Thanks for this video. A little update (13 years later) for anyone who is considering visiting this spot... My sons and I visited this exact spot today (Aug 2024) and it looks a lot different... There was no rough path in at this point. It's very swampy by the edge of the water, the dock seen in this video is completely gone, and it was too treacherous to really cast rods out (lot of low hanging trees and branches fallen at the shoreline and beyond). I guess by kayak really is the only way to fish this pond.

I rode the last Orange line outbound trip to Forest hills. That particular train left inbound earlier that evening. It was the last trip from Oak Grove to Forest Hills. I rode the round trip. The last train arrived at Forest Hills.The last inbound had left earlier. The station was deserted, a few bigwigs but no fanfare. Train quietly reversed direction to "deadhead" back.

I notice there are lines painted on the streets. They don’t do much of that anymore. It’s amazing how many things haven’t changed. Looks like there were a lot more trees downtown back then, which is sad.

Sadly 1011 isn’t in service anymore and the locomotive next to it, 1056, was rebuilt by mpi into an f40ph-3c in mid-2022 and is still in service to this day. It used to be a massdot engine in blue paint like its twin 1062 and both were rebuilt in Waterville, Maine and were used for the 2016 CapeFLYER season runs in June to Cape Cod. The newest scheme which is the 3rd generation of the f40ph diesel-electric passenger locomotive is similar to the hsp46’s paint scheme with the mixture of the black, purple, white and thin yellow stripes and the big “T” logos on the sides. The locomotives started appearing in this scheme in early 2019 when they were starting to be rebuilt by mpi in boise, idaho. I really like 1011’s paint scheme and wish they brought back that livery for the f40ph-3cs instead of using that awful hsp46-style scheme for them.

Based on the el footage, and the fact the Charles was frozen, I'm assuming this was shot in the winter/spring of '87. It amazing both how much and how little Boston/Cambridge has changed in a generation(-and-a-half). Technically, I wish there were commonly available tools to restore this footage. I feel like many of the vhs related artifacts (waves and pops) can now easily be corrected, the image can be stabilized, and the definition upgraded to HD. I'm not sure if the city-wise pans can slowed, with missing frames "estimated" and filled in using a process similar to that of definition upgrading. Also, I'm not sure if color adjustment technology exists: but I noticed several instance where, panning over the city, buildings were displayed in full color, but obscured to black as the focal point of the image shifted; and I would like to think there may be tooling to "recolor" those buildings based on that observed when they were in the main focal point.

I don't mean to romanticize the past, but compared to today, these were much simpler and better times.

The big black locomotive with the Penn Central markings was once the pride of the former great "Standad Railroad of the World" - the Pennsylvania Railroad - once at the head of the most luxurious Chicago - East Coast Trains such as the Broadway Limited - 1950s if it's an E8. You can tell by the lift rings.

I can guarantee the people in this video are 37 years older today.
