How to Introduce Decodable Books When Teaching Your Child to Read | Preschool, Pre-K, Kindergarten
☀️ FREE End-of-the-Year Literacy Goals for Pre-K & Kindergarten: littleslovelearning.lpages.co/end-of-year-literacy-goals/
When teaching your child to read at home, it's important to give them a chance to practice their phonics skills by having them read decodable books after each new skill they've learned.
You can learn more about my favorite decodable books in this video:
th-cam.com/video/TyZ01ZeP_5A/w-d-xo.html
But instead of just handing them a decodable book to read, you want to follow these 5 steps to make sure they're actually READY to read the entire book on their own!
These steps are perfect for preschool, pre-k, and kindergarten littles to follow when learning to read at home.
Keep watching to learn about these 5 steps!
*NOTE: The letter x actually represents 2 phonemes in 1 letter: /k/ & /s/. So the word Jax technically has 4 phonemes: /j/ /a/ /k/ /s/. However, when I'm teaching preschoolers, I don't go into this level of complexity for letter x, and instead I want them to simply say /ks/.

Im starting to prepare to teach my preschooler to start reading readiness and this was the most useful video I have found on TH-cam, thank you so much, and I love your cards
Aww yay! Thank you so much, this just made my day!! I host free trainings every Thursday sharing tips for teaching your child to read at home. If you're interested in checking it out, you can register here: littleslovelearning.lpages.co/3-secrets-training/
Decidable books
Thanks for watching! Here are some great decodable books for you to check out: th-cam.com/video/Z6C4-Mgqj6o/w-d-xo.html
Wtf is that second group of “words”
Those are known as "nonsense words." The purpose of asking a child to read those words is to make sure they're using phonics skills to decode words and not just memorizing them. A 5 or 6 year old who has been taught about consonants and short vowels will know how to read those words, even if they aren't real words on their own. Nonsense words might also be part of a multisyllabic word (for example, having a child read "sil" which is the first syllable of "silver.") Here's a video where I share more about this topic if you're interested: th-cam.com/video/NYe3vOw5XGE/w-d-xo.html
They're fake words. They have zero meaning and don't exist unless as acronyms. Even though they don't exist, it's possible to sound them out and turn them into meaningless/nonsense words. It exercises phonics skills and practice. People see words they've never heard before. Phonics helps to identify the pronounciation in most instances. It helps to identify the meaning when asking someone about it later.
@ ohhh ok thx
Thank you!
All I can say to this is "delta union hotel". I wish my kids' teachers supported my efforts to teach this to my toddlers 15 yrs ago.
I'm so sorry you had such a difficult experience!
Mom of an autistic boy with a very high IQ. My sons teachers said this when he didn't read the "nonsense" words ( that's what my kids school calls them). Said he memorized a high volume words. Which isn't true, I throw any word at him and he WILL read it. I asked him why he didn't just show them he could read the nonsense words. He said because they are nonsense and not real, so it doesn't make much sense to read them. The way people try to force kids to learn in a particular way and not let the kids get to the answers their own way is really what makes school hard for most, and easy for some.
I'm so sorry that was your son's experience. I love that he could articulate to you why he didn't want to read those words. I hope you shared that with your son's teacher. The purpose of this reel is to remind parents that having kids memorize a list of sight words is not going to help them learn to read and spell. If your son was able to read and spell any word because he knew his phonics skills, that's amazing! But that's not the case for many kids. That's why we need to break the habit of memorizing sight words and instead focus on the phonics skills behind them. Nonsense words can be helpful because they might be a syllable in a multisyllabic word (such as having a child read "sil" which is the first part of "silver.") They have their place. I also understand your frustration with schools trying to force kids to learn in a particular way, but research shows that systematic, explicit phonics instruction is the best way to teach all kids. Of course some kids will learn more easily. But since we as teachers don't know who those kids are, we use systematic explicit instruction for everyone. There are many subjects where discovery learning (where kids get to the answers in their own way) is amazing & encouraged, but reading is not one of them.
I would like youe help please.. where and how do i start to teach my child tp read?
I would love to help! I'm hosting a free live training coming up where I'll share the secrets for successfully teaching your child to read at home. You can register here: littleslovelearning.lpages.co/3-secrets-training/
You are not correctly forming those letters.
Can you tell me more about what you're seeing? I'm happy to clarify any part that's confusing. But what I share in the video is the correct way to from lowercase b and lowercase d.

I am so desperate for help. My daughter is 4 and gifted. I thought I might be a bit delusional because when she first started 4k I brought it up but they blew it off. I think they assumed that I'm just a flashcard mom. if Im being truly honest I dropped the ball with doing much of any directed educational activities. I've started trying at home, but I'm not a teacher. Idk what I'm doing. I'm worried I'm missing something much that's important. I did get her tested, and messed that up a bit too because it turned out she was sick, so probably not her best performance. Still, she got a 136 overall IQ score and scored in the 99%. What do I do here! School is not helping really.
Oh my goodness, that's a lot going on. I'd be happy to help you! I also have a free training on Thursday if you'd like to come. I can teach you exactly how to teach your daughter at home and answer all of your questions! Love this. How do you address vowels? Do you just choose 1 sound or do you cover all the different sounds that vowels make in one session?
Thank you! Great question. I focus on short vowels first. I start introducing long vowels when I teach open syllable words like go, she, & hi. But that's after I've introduced all the short vowels and my students can read and spell words with short vowels. I hope that helps!
How about with prek? Is there an order for the letters? Thank you!
Great question! Here's a video I did where I shared my favorite order: th-cam.com/video/NuKg7C7ynNU/w-d-xo.html For pre-k, I would just eliminate the digraphs. But other than that, I follow the same order for introducing the consonants and short vowels. If you're looking for a phonics curriculum for pre-k, I did create one that follows my letter order. Let me know if you need the link!

I do this quite a bit differently. We read at least once a day, usually more, from the time the child is born. As they get older and can recognize letters, I have them point out letters they recognize in the book. They usually start doing this on their own, without my prompting. So after a little while I have them help me read the book by reading the words "a" and "I". Once they have mastered that, I choose a common question in the book we are reading - my son picked this up on his own with "the" and "and". For my daughter, I have been using "dinosaur" most often, but if the book doesn't have a dinosaur, I'll choose another word for her. Over time they just start learning to read by helping me read. It makes them feel big and they really enjoy it. And there is never any pressure. If they don't feel like helping that day, they don't have to. It's just for fun.
I love that you found something that works for your family!
@littleslovelearning Thank you. I'm sharing in case it helps someone else
Welsley you have great resources. I a reading interventionist and cannot wait to use it with my students
She is the BEST!
❤️🙌
Thank you!
I would just say dont force it upon them. If they are enjoying the learning process, and seeking it out then encourage that. But if its not happening yet, let it be for now. Also screen your kids for dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, and dyspraxia. I had undiagnosed dyslexia, didnt start learning to read till i was 10 and it was terrible. Im almost 25 now, and reading is still a struggle. It also carrys alot of anxiety with it, as I thought I was just stupid for most of my life.
I'm so sorry that was your experience 💔 My husband has a similar story. He still couldn't read at the end of 2nd grade, which is when he was finally diagnosed with his learning disability, and those experiences still impact him as an adult. One of the benefits of working with kids on their reading skills early is that we can start seeing red flags for things like dyslexia even as young as preschool. We want to get kids early intervention as soon as possible so they don't get a late diagnosis like you did. And yes, we definitely don't force it on them. We keep it fun, playful, and based on brain research for how to teach reading appropriately.
I could read by age 3. My parents made it fun. I taught my son to read, write, count, before he got to kindergarten. The teacher was sure he was in kindergarten before, but I told her how I did it, and she was so happy a parent did that. Early reading is a great skill for kids. I just keep things age-appropriate, and I let them choose what they want to read about. ❤
I love this comment SO much! Thank you for sharing! I agree with you, we can keep things age-appropriate and joyful and kids LOVE it! 🎉
Wow I really like this idea definitely will be doing this

So what should you say r spells? Also what about the r in rain? Sounds like /er/ to me but I could be wrong
In rain, letter r is spelling the /r/ sound when I say it (although I know we all have different accents). But I don't say "er-ai-n." Think about a word like "earthquake." That word has /er/ at the beginning of the word. Earthquake and Rain have different beginning sounds. Hopefully that makes sense! I know it's tricky to only use writing to talk about sounds. What do we say then? 😅
I like to think of the word "red." I say "red," but I don't say "ed." That's how my mouth should be positioned for the /r/ sound. I go over all the letter sounds in this video: th-cam.com/users/shortsK4f27PCS7-k
OMG! OMG! OMG! No time to play😢
Actually there's plenty of time to play! Your child can have free, independent play AND learn literacy skills (also through play!) We don't have to pick academics or play, we can incorporate both for our little ones.
I strongly agree.
Thank you for watching!
Hi, so to teach syllable awareness, we use activities that have them blend, segment, delete? is that correct?
Yes! I like to have them blend syllables, segment syllables, add syllables, delete syllables, and substitute syllables, just like I do with phonemes. You can see examples of each level of syllable activity in this post: littleslovelearning.com/syllable-awareness/
THANK YOU so much for this!! It was really illuminating to understand giftedness as a neurodivergence. I was identified as gifted as a kid myself, and strongly suspect my daughter is as well.
You're so welcome, thank you for watching! Erin is truly a gift to families to help us better understand giftedness and neurodivergence in this way. I wish I had met her 6 years ago when my daughter was first identified because I had no idea what giftedness was back then! It's definitely not what I thought it was when I was growing up in school.
