    I prefer wintergreen because of that area with all the black diamonds. I've done every run and they aren't TOO hard. And there is variety in the slopes. I also like the fact that if you own a house at the top of the mountain you can just walk out, get your ticket, and ski!

    • @AdventureLife365
      @AdventureLife365 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Yes those are great aspects of Wintergreen!! The reverse mountain is a unique part of it. I used to really enjoy all the blacks being off to themselves, but you still have to wait in the busiest lift line (at the bottom of the greens) in order to return to the main area..

  • @BeerWagoon
    @BeerWagoon วันที่ผ่านมา

    I thought Sugar was fun and well laid out. The little towns right in the area are nice. Does it make sense to go to Sugar if you can go out west or even up to the northeast? No, absolutely not. This mountain is for people in the region and gives those people a place to ski when a bigger trip doesn't make sense (or you're a local). I live in the coastal SC area. Sugar is about 4-5 hrs drive. I need to weigh the option to grab a cheap flight up to Boston and hit the mountains in NH/VT/ME.

    • @AdventureLife365
      @AdventureLife365 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I can understand that. For you, you’ve got to decide if driving 4 hrs here is easier or more cost effective than flying to VT, renting a car, etc. because if you have the time & money definitely do VT or out West!

    I tried skiing here (and at Sugar) once, thinking it’s a lot closer to where I live and so travel would be a lot easier than Colorado (so I could add an extra ski trip that season). Perfectly suitable but it lacks the one thing that a large, western resort has and that is the best part of skiing - areas that are too far and scary for beginners. Every run, regardless of rating, is crowded with beginners who don’t really understand or don’t yet know how to ride without being hazards to other riders. Everyone was a beginner at some point, but there are no back bowls or areas that beginners won’t visit so you spend the day dodging out of control riders and getting mowed down. Obvious upside is that you don’t have hour-long lift lines at choke points like you do out west - a new and really quite significant issue lately at Vail, Breck, etc.

    • @AdventureLife365
      @AdventureLife365 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, I can see how it lacks that super advanced terrain like out West, but on the East Coast there’s not much terrain like that at all.. so I can’t fault Beech for not having it. Best way to avoid crowds of beginners is to go riding during the week 👍

    • @philipmarsh3522
      @philipmarsh3522 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ I look at it as a good place to go if you don’t have the time to make a big trip out west and particularly if you are still learning and are really wasting your money at somewhere like Vail where 90% of the terrain is not going to be fun (or safe) for someone who could progress in one or two visits to a smaller resort to skiing most if not all of the terrain. There are some really solid places on the eastern side, up in Vermont and the surrounding mountains, that will challenge the best skiers from the western states, though. There is a good reason why so many World Cup skiers come from Vermont! Great videos, by the way. No doubt they are a great resource for families trying to figure out a way to try skiing and who can’t swing the rather eye popping cost of a trip out west. I have a place in Vail and the management company charges $5k per night during the season. Even a more modest place is going to run $1,500 minimum per night. Lift tickets are HUNDREDS per day and most visitors aren’t going to have season passes (really worth the money if you are skiing for five days or more). On-mountain dining is like paying for a Michelin star restaurant for … somewhat acceptable food. All this after paying for flights, renting a car at inflated prices and spending two days getting there and back. No small lift.

    • @AdventureLife365
      @AdventureLife365 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Exactly with all those costs plus the need for more travel time either out West or to the Northeast makes it too difficult for most people.. but for the area, or a short trip it’s a great place

  • @mindjeromebiz

    I went to sugar mountain in 2016 (on the best real snow day they've had in 10 years) it blew my mind how expensive it was for how mediocre everything was. Back then I believe I paid around $200 for lift and rental. This is supposed to be the best ski resort in NC. I'm a below average snowboarder and even I could make it from the top to the bottom in about 5 minutes and the diamonds are pathetic. Now compared to the western side of the US. Bogus Basin in Boise, Idaho is considered one of the "worst" ski resorts in that area.. but it's probably 10x bigger than sugar mountain and less than half the price. $80 for lift and rental. You get two sides of a mountain with trails and slopes for all styles of riding. It takes about 45 minutes to get from the top to the bottom at bogus. anyways, moral of the story is the east coast mountains will never be on par with the west coast mountains.

    • @AdventureLife365
      @AdventureLife365 วันที่ผ่านมา

      $200 is crazy! Not sure when that was but you can get a lift ticket for around $50-$60 on the week days currently. And it’s tough to try to compare East & West coasts because the terrain is so different.. but then you usually have farther commutes and crazy hour long lift lines out West too..

    I went to Sugar last Saturday ! Ya the main lift up to the top of the resort was so congested cuz another lift was down. It took 20 minutes to get onto the lift. Doesn’t help when it can fit 6 people and you get groups of 3-4 go on. But it’s a solid resort! Did $94 for 11:30-4:30 which was plenty ! The black diamonds are almost never open. This is a beginner mountain. Gunther the owner yanked my ski pass off my jacket and tore my zipper because I was skiing fast. Being from up north and skiing at expert terrain all the time Sugar was a huge disappointment. Plus all the trails lead into one trail on the entire mountain. So it gets super crowded. If you are dead set on skiing North Carolina, make the extra drive to Beech or a better alternative is to go up to West Virginia to Snowshoe or even Winterplace.

    I literally just got done skiing both of these resorts. I'm an expert and my wife is an intermediate. We both preferred Liberty over Whitetail. Whitetail definitely has more expert terrain, more terrain in total, and the 900ft or so of vertical is definitely better than Liberty's 600ish ft, but I really felt like Whitetail's slopes were completely uninteresting. For the most part, Whitetail's slopes just go straight down the fall line, with no flatter areas or turns to make things interesting. Liberty's trails felt like a little adventure each time. The trails are a part of the mountain, turning and dipping in different places. I could vary up my runs as well, starting at the top of one trail and then moving to a different one on the bottom half of the mountain. Furthermore, Liberty is actually a resort with a hotel, good food, and a nice big lodge. Whitetail's lodge wasn't bad, but it wasn't as extensive as Liberty's. In terms of vibe, I felt like Liberty's staff and the local skiers were friendlier than Whitetail, but it wasn't massively different. Thanks for the video!

    Ive been to both Sugar and Beech for over 10 years. Beech is light years better than Sugar in almost every single aspect. The runs are wider and have better snow. The facilities are nicer and are upgraded more frequently. Most of the 4-pack lifts are high speed. The ones at Sugar haven’t been updated in ages. There’s no giant eyesore at the top of the mountain, instead they have an awesome summit bar (should’ve mentioned it). After I went to Beech once, I’ve never wanted to go back to Sugar. I would only even consider going if Beech was closed or somehow packed and Sugar wasn’t, but even that is super unlikely. If Beech is crowded, Sugar is usually a nightmare.

    The last time I went to sugar mountain about 5 years ago we went down the mountain a total of 6-8 times. We waited in line for over an hour every single time. It was a powder day but the only thing it was good for was getting black out drunk in line.I will never go back.

    sugar is ass. no culture. all money grabs. they dont care about safety either. go to beech or app. they wont blow snow in your face all day and night and ruin visibility, and its quiet. you also get terrain parks at beech and app. and both beech and app have great cultures, people, and atmospheres. luke winkleman grew up in blowing rock(app) and has got the red bull rail jam there. Zeb Powell grew up riding Beech and the small little town at beech has great small business shops and food. If i go to sugar it's ONCE per year and thats bc they open first 99% of the time and I just itch to get back on a board.

      I hear what you’re saying, but Vail owns so many places that’s it’s unrealistic to not ride at their resorts.. especially in the Mid Atlantic region, we’ve got to ride whatever we can get to

      Yeah I hear you. That is what sucks about all of the skiing being controlled by two main corporations. I am happy my home ski mountain Killington is independent. Having two companies control the industry is the main reason lift ticket prices are thru the roof. It forces everyone to purchase a season pass. I have a Killington pass and an Icon because when I ski out West the lift tickets are insanely expensive. Thirty years ago I was skiing Alta for under 30 dollars and Jackson got maybe 40 to 50 dollars. Take care

    • @AdventureLife365

      Thanks for the question! I would say they’re slightly less steep than blacks in Vermont. But honestly it’s hard to tell

    • @davidhill703
      @davidhill703 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The three black-rated summit trails start legitimately steep, not unlike some parts of Stowe, MRG, Sugarbush, but the steepness is all there is to it. There are no natural twists and turns and bumps, and it and the other black-rated summit trails are short. The terrain is not terribly exciting, though once in a while I've seen Gunther's a little bumped up. If it were in Vermont or anywhere in the Northeast it'd be a minor locals day area at best, but it's about as good as you'll get in North Carolina. Sugar's good for your skiing fix if you can go on a non-holiday weekday. Avoid it on weekends until March. Twice I've been hit from behind by kids on snowboards. When crowds thin out and, by mid-month, the ticket price drops. It's not terribly exciting but hey, it's the south, and be grateful you can ski at all.

      I've been to roundtop and liberty. Roundtop has short lines, bc there is no lodging; just a place to get food and a locker room below. I also suspect ppl from Maryland and Virginia go to liberty and whitetail. Plus, roundtop has 6 lifts for 21 trails, 5 of which are consistently open. So yeah, give roundtop a try if you don't like lines, and can go any time of the day, ideally before the ice gets exposed.

    I have been skiing and boarding since I was 3 years old. I have owned two different properties in Snowshoe and we absolutely LOVE it! One challenge was that some of the lodging was quite dated some 5 or 6 years ago but that did provide a great opportunity for people like me who have remodeling expertise. I was able to buy older, run down properties and turn them into the highest end on this particular mountain setting records for resale values in 2 or three categories over the past few years.

    The most unique thing about Beech is that it used to have the "Land of Oz" theme park on the backside of the mountain. Although it is now only open one weekend a year, it's still THE most unique thing about it. Property on and near Beech has been much more reasonably priced than other NC ski resorts. We would regularly drive past Sugar just to get to Beech pretty much EVERY time when I was younger (in the 80's)

    • @AdventureLife365
      @AdventureLife365 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ok cool I was unaware of the “Land of Oz” feature. There’s definitely a good argument to have regarding a Sugar & Beech comparison

    #Subscribed! I have been skiing in NC since 1972. I prefer Beech Mountain myself but your rating in Sugar is fair. IMHO the prices have gotten out of control. I miss Hawk's Nest as a ski resort as it was decent but unfortunately, it is now only a tubing run. Slope side lodging needs to be better for every NC resort as the only real options are full-sized homes so we actually own a 1 bedroom condo up in Snowshoe, WV which is about 3 times the size of Sugar and has direct slopeside access and a village in the center with restaurants so that is where we have invested our $s. Please review Hatley which is the old Wolf Lodge that has been re-done. I know they have had challenges with their re-opening.
