Brilliant tempo kept with metronomic accuracy! You bring out the syncopation when the tenor part comes in, shortly after the start of the fugue, so much more accurately and convincingly than any other performance I have ever listen to anywhere. It is my favourite fugue; I have sought them out. The closest performance to this is by a Nicholas Danby. This is peak Bach IMHO. The rich tapestry of harmonization is unsurpassed. I never cease to be amazed when I hear (in the tenor part again) almost a full 2 octave minor chromatic scale where, despite everything else going on, Bach manages to weave this in and create a buildup of tension before the final pleasingly discordant cadence. Sheet music required to follow along!! I just wish it was played more. 😢
