This video shows some of their findings. You can learn more on their website (ridgeroute.org) or their TH-cam channel@ridgeroute.
Pyramid Rock in Piru Gorge - 2024
มุมมอง 1649 หลายเดือนก่อน
Pyramid Rock was a landmark along old US 99 in Piru Gorge between Los Angeles and Bakersfield. It was originally "created" in 1931 when the Ridge Route Alternate was being constructed through Piru Gorge by slicing through a ridge, leaving a pyramid-shaped rock behind. The rock remained a landmark until 1968 when I-5 bypassed this section to accommodate construction of Pyramid Lake, of which Pyr...

US 99 shield revealed in Los Angeles
มุมมอง 385ปีที่แล้ว
In April 2023, a piece of overlay fell off a sign on the Ventura Freeway (State 134) at Victory Blvd revealing a long lost US 99 shield. A State 134 EAST sign remains covered on the left side of the sign.
Big Oak Flat along the Ridge Route Alternate
มุมมอง 176ปีที่แล้ว
This section of old US 99 (Golden State Highway just north of Templin Highway) is a classic example of how it looked prior to the construction of I-5. Here you can see the older four-lane expressway with a four foot striped median, which was common on the Ridge Route Alternate from Castaic to Los Alamos Canyon. This is the last remaining intact from that era.

Good video. I really like the historical photos that were shown.
I really like your content on the Ridge Route alternate. 3:11 My Dad a retired CHP T/O .He told me stories about working the 5 mi out of Castaic he also worked the scales at Castaic Jct. As a kid, I remember traveling the R.A. in the 1960s you know it was very scenic In 1980 the road was still in good shape. The striping and paddle markers were still intact. My wife and I walked from Frenchman flats to the dam. Thank you for what you do to educate people on a forgotten highway. 😊
Thank you.
We have a lot of material on that section, so there will be more. Thank you for your support!
Pollock Bridge is on Shasta Lake, in Lakehead...
I can’t believe more people have not viewed this. Thanks for the great information
Excellent video! Starting in Ventura, recall driving through Santa Paula and Filmore at the start and end of the trip to Sequoia and Kings Canyon. Possible stops at Gorman. Stops on the way at an A&W root beer stand and having Orange Julius drink. Epic family vacations in 1960s. PS - never thought about it but the Piru creek must feed Piru dam which is part of the water system of Ventura County.
In the 40s and 50s we would make an annual trip from Burbank to Fresno. Lots of memories on US99.
I have always heard that the original ridge route was chosen specifically because even in the 1910’s there was talks of building Pyramid Lake.
There were talks, though a different version altogether. That one would have been an upstream version of modern Lake Piru.
one of the Fresno communities favorite parts of the city. Also where the CA High Speed Rail line plans to run through. Although run down was one of the hotspots of Fresno nightlife and is currently next to Tower District, Producers Dairy, the Fresno Chaffee Zoo, Storyland Fresno, and is where the historic Golden State Highway (about 2 blocks from modern HWY 99). 10/10
Blown away by this! Are the roads and bridge still there under the water? How far below the water depths (generally speaking) is the highway? Are there any photos/videos of the filling of the lake?
there were (free) water radiator pull-offs located next to the wild grapes, as kids we stopped and added water to the radiator and picked/ate the wild grapes
There still are a couple of stops on the uphill grade at Grapevine where you can do that today.
Growing up Bakersfield in the 1950s-1970s both terms "Grapevine " and "Ridge Route " were used interchangeably among locals and out of towners. We hardly called it Hwy 99 or Interstate 5. Same is true today .Bill formally from Bakersfield
Even those of us in Fresno call it either the "Grape Vine" or "Ridge Route". Even the TV weatherman calls it that. Everyone knows what you are talking about.
1961, I was 8 years old, and my dad took us and the family over the old 4 lane. In his 1955 Chevrolet Nomad. He remembered the 3 lane road. The middle lane was often referred to as the "suicide passing lane. " This is because both directions could pass at any time. I grew up in Bakersfield and remembered hearing about run away trucks. Bill
Oh yea the runaway trucks, how could you forget those. thanks for the memories.
I remember driving up through there in the very early 60’s with my dad and brother going hunting. We were more interested in looking at the trucks climbing the grade. At night their exhaust stacks were glowing red! Good memories.
I used to truck Petrochemicals on the old 99 late sixties, early 70s and in took 5 hrs to get to Bakersfield. Back the they were blowing the footing for the dam. I got drafted and when I got back in 73, I-5 had just opened and the lake filling. The trip to bakersfield was cut to 2 1/2hrs. I remember that at the I-5 and US 99split there was a sign saying "NO SERVICES FOR 350 MILES."
Pretty cool
Fantastic!
good infor
Thanks i live in castaic. And have drove the 99 a few years back.my grandfather ran a garage and towing up past the old ralphs.boat store now
Nice work been there and done that as I drive the ridge route many times each year, you got it right. Thank You
Thank you. I am familiar with the area, have lived all my life around there since 1946. It has change so much thru the year since. I alway wondered about Beal's cut. I pass by there just about every week on my way to Sylmar, along sierra highway. 😎
Well, there wasn’t much need for a video. It was pretty much just flash cards.
i remember passing frenchman flat in 1951-53 and envying the families camping and fishing there,+as we drove north. also the beautiful oak forest around lebec and still there today, though deminished. thanks alot for the video.
Thank you, nice video👍, really enjoyed it.
Good video! I was wondering how it then looked
Thank you so much, this was interesting 👍
Thanks for the great historical video. I wish I could go back in time and drive 99 North prior to Pyramid Lake.
Glad you enjoyed it. The tech for at least doing a virtual drive is already there, just a matter of inputting the data.
So cool!!!! Thanks!!!
Good informative video, thank you for this.
Enjoyed the video. I have searched for any photos but am not able to locate on Arthur Weldons ranch which was built by the station tunnel. Ofcourse as some know Arthur Weldon was part of the team who built the tunnel and homesteaded that area. I have read about a Eucalyptus tree that he had planted that grew to be the largest in the area. Additionally I have found documents that show cabins and streets all around the bridge but have never found photos of them either.
yeah, only thing I remember about 99 from those years as a boy, was this pyramid. And Tips.
Nice overall history of the various routes between northern and southern CA.
Thank you. There will be a lot more coming in the future.
Replacing Overhead Sign Panels.
Climate Change is making weather events more extreme. This will impact the worlds food supply. Floods, droughts, fires, excessive heat and low water levels in reservoirs and in ground water storage are becoming more common. We must stop adding more fossil fuels to the climate fire. India, China, Brazil, Japan, US, Europe, Indonesia, Canada, Germany and Australia need to do more to reduce use of fossil fuels. They must stop building and financing more coal fossil fuels power plants. Time to go all in on wind and solar energy and electric vehicles. Fossil fuels are a bad investment for people and the planet. Investors are divesting from fossil fuels. ESG investing is growing. The cost of dealing with the impact of climate change will be greater than the cost of reducing the impact. The world population is expected to grow by another billion people. Where will the food come from ?
Drinking water?
This water is mostly used for agriculture in the Sacramento Valley. Some does end up in the California Aqueduct in the Delta.
I saw the old image of this bridge and I'm astonished how much sediment has accumulated in 80 years. That bridge is HIGH before it was submerged.
WOW. What a miracle the fish built this bridge when it was underwater when no one was looking Them sneaky fellas. Do fish drive? I bet they got help from the creatures from area 51. WOW?
😱😱😱😱😱😱
Thanks for sharing.
Where is this relative to the I5 bridge?
This is west of I-5 at Lakehead by a few miles.
It's scary & most of our reservoirs are running on empty. Mead & powell are the most concerning to me ( imperial valley) where a majority of are food is grown. Suddenly a food shortage isn't out of the Question. I'm planning on a trip this summer to see shasta & hover🤞hopefully they'll be lakes to see lol. Thanks for sharing the beautiful pics 💯👍
What kind of boat are you in? It would probably be smoother if you wasn’t on choppy water.
Instead of constantly thinking about raising the height of the Dam. They should take this opportunity to dredge the lake floor. Take all that material and use it to reinforce the Level System in the valley. This creating more water storage capacity for later. Without spending billions of dollars in refitting a Dam that was not design to go higher.
@Dan Gander yup
@Dan Gander Lake Shasta is a Federal Bureau of Reclamation project, not a State project. The reservoir doesn't actually have as much sedimentation as these videos suggest. This is localized to the area where the river meets the reservoir, not the main part of the reservoir.
@@highway99 I'm not just talking sediment. Remove the mountains that are in the lake. That are usually under water. That would create a lot more volume.
LOL!! Exactly, "What lake?" It's a shame they have released so much water. Even with the drought it shouldn't be this low.
The issue with the lake level is most of the water is already spoken for downstream. They, the Federal govt is only allowed to hold back so much for other uses.
Well that was interesting 👍🏼
So Cal sucked y’all dry huh? Yup, they’re pretty thirsty. As the Colorado. I’m amazed it’s kept up as well as it did. I wish I could go back and see it at its greatest flow ever.
Oh I didn’t know this was called the pollok bridge here is a short drone video with the train tracks in it I think you might like it th-cam.com/video/P_QvZVhhJI0/w-d-xo.html
I have a series of videos of this area from about 8 or 9 months ago, I went there 3 times in 3 month intervals , you might want to check it out. Thanks for the info. th-cam.com/video/LsFJjSQqyuM/w-d-xo.html

And this has all been under water until recently, correct?
Is this underwater again?
