RTO2014 Repair Part 1
I just bought a new RTO2014 Oscilloscope! It's beautiful... but it has SDRAM glitches. The ebay seller made it right, but now I have to actually fix it! In this video I track down the faulty chip.

Coupled Port is Near Port

Part 2: th-cam.com/video/mkGd1uEsAU0/w-d-xo.html For coupled-line couplers, my intuition has always been that the coupled line "steals away" part of the signal from the thru line, and that the "stolen" signal on the coupled line travels in the same direction as the signal in the thru line. However, this would suggest that the near port (the port on the coupled line that is closest to the input ...

    the pressure patch of a tire is typically in the range of 1000-2500 pounds per tier depending on weight. a small tubular object is not going to bear full load of a flexible rubber tire. its gonna marhsmellow and put lots of contact pressure around the object and straight to ground. putting more like 100-500 pounds of pressure on this small area. this is not a good test of crush strength for small items.

      These are for lab instruments. The threat profile is 50lb plastic boxes and 200lb hairy apes. These cables are expensive -- that short cable may have cost $10k in its past life -- so lab supervisors (myself included) make much ado about how fragile they are and how much care they must be handled with. The connectors are the most fragile part, so this is still accurate to first order, but it is entertaining to see that in one direction at least the protection wildly exceeds expectations.

      Right, you need all 4 boxes but you can mix and match to meet your requirements. The screen and IF (box below the screen) stay roughly the same but you can choose 8340/8350/8360 as your source and 8514/8515/8516/8517 as your test set. Both the source and test set need to support the frequency you want to measure. If they don't match exactly that's ok, they just operate on frequencies they both support. There are lots of options in this family.

    • @jjoonathan7178
      @jjoonathan7178 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with using a power supply as a current source is the output capacitor. You can set a 1mA limit, but if the output capacitor is charged, it can discharge much more than 1mA without being limited. You might even see sparks with a 1mA "limit"! Instead, either use a quick custom circuit (voltage plus resistor, LDO regulator across a series resistor), an actual current source instrument, or a SMU.

  • @stever7638
    @stever7638 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for the review, well done. These things have really gone up in price so still debating one.. quick question, do you find the variable 0-1A on channel 3 and 4, especially CH4... limiting being a max of 1A? I personally feel that's the biggest downfall of this PSU.

    • @jjoonathan7178
      @jjoonathan7178 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it made me a bit nervous, but I've always been able to find a job for the runt channel. There's usually at least one low-power, low-voltage job around. I suppose it's largely a function of what you're doing, and most of my projects at the moment are small modules rather than board bringup or power electronics. I've been eyeing the NGP-814, but it'll have to wait until I actually outgrow the GPP-4323, and that hasn't happened yet.

    • @stever7638
      @stever7638 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jjoonathan7178 I agree, I think I will have more smaller jobs for the 3rd or 4th channel than I think. Having a variable, lower current channel, offers more flexibility than a higher fixed current channel. That being said.....with the almost $150 increase of the 4323, I can get two 3303X-E's...for one 4323.....so there lies the dillema. I'd rather have only 1 psu right now, but it's a PSU...lol, always room for more power. My gut says go with 4 variable current outputs in one unit, than with 2 separate PSU's. Plus, the 4323 has standard BNC-banana plug width terminals.

    😀Around 30 years ago, a technical colleguean have built a 3U rack in order to made a 10 Mhz distribution. This was oscillating.....the main reason was because the outputs wasn't loaded. Generally amplifier specs output are not given for SC to open.....but up to a SWR 2 to 3 for example. That I see is that the outputs are open on the box.

    Thx for sharing. If you suspected the cables why not replace the cable with coax. I can appreciate what you did, and rational but you could have just as easily filtered out what was naturally there espcially when a swap of the cables would have been so easy

    • @jjoonathan7178
      @jjoonathan7178 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Activating the scope filter took all of 5 seconds, while chasing the RF out of the cables would be a lot harder than just swapping the 6in banana leads for coax. 1cm of banana jack is more than enough for 2.4GHz to get in (and even substantial 100MHz), so I'd have to bring both the power supply and oscilloscope into a EMC chamber and I'd have to use an EMC-sanitized camera and so on. But why would we even want such a measurement? We are not going to be using the supply in an EMC chamber, we are going to be using it on a bench, where any banana-jack supply is going to be crawling with 2.4GHz and all other kinds of RF, just by virtue of having non-coaxial output. We should design the power networks of our circuits to handle RF hitchhiking on the DC inputs rather than try to produce RF-free inputs. Decoupling is much easier than generating and shipping RF-free DC.

    • @KeanM

      @@jjoonathan7178 Yep, certainly some applications are more difficult than others, so I'll keep an eye out for these style of pens. But if you need to resort to lacquer or epoxy coating anyway then I'm sure you can also get heatshrink to stay in place. And there is quite a wide range of heatshrink colours available cheaply these days (but possibly of lesser quality). Another solution if you have the tools is to 3D print, or CNC cut, some coloured plastic rings - e.g. to replace the lower part of the binding post.

    • @jjoonathan7178
      @jjoonathan7178 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that sounds plausible. The reason for the "culture" comment was because of an earlier experience with a Rigol DS4014 where I learned that it had two blue channels (one teal, one saturated blue) for cultural reasons -- evidently in China (or some subset of the East) teal is considered conceptually distinct from saturated blue in the same way that we'd consider green conceptually distinct from blue. My previous GPD-3303S had channel 1 on the right and channel 2 on the left, so funky channel layouts are a trend with GW Instek, and I'm not entirely convinced that aux positioning entirely explains the overall trend, but I certainly don't know for sure.
