I did not understand what happened at the end. Although it was relaxing to hear
Ah okay so they thought he was rich pedigree.
Just wondering if this story is based on a true story or part of a fictional novel.
This is from "Cattle Brands" by Andy Adams, which is a collection of short stories by him which were not entirely nonfictional, having been based on his experiences on the trail and stories he had heard from his companions and wayfarers.
It's my opinion that Stories of this kind need to be made part of upper grade school and higher classes education.....for Reality Orientation, besides History...
Ok
Very good. Familiar ring of contemporary conditions.....very familiar.
Thank you. I hope you find more to enjoy on the channel!
Amazing.
Thank you. I hope you find more to enjoy on the channel!
Interesting and enjoyable after dinner story.....
That is great to hear! I hope you find more to enjoy on the channel!
Exceptionally well done. Having grown up on the Missouri north of Council Bluffs I have taken these same adventures many times as a young boy if only in my minds eye.
I think it is all so beautiful to look at through the words of these amazing tales. I hope you find more to your liking on the channel!
This was well done. Boy that fella really wanted that gun lol. 🤣 I’m currently writing a story that is in my home area of Monroe-Carleton-South Rockwood Michigan in the 1830s and content for that specific area and time is very scarce. I really appreciate this and will be sure to subscribe and check out your other videos. Thank you again, this is invaluable information. 🤩
Thank you very much. I hope you find more to your liking on the channel, and good luck on your story!
John Day and Maupin Oregon are the best places in this country to go white water rafting and bush camping/ rock climbing. In the summer of 1994, I spent the entire summer on a wilderness training excursion from Bend, Oregon; down to Newberry lava beds in southern Oregon, over to 3 Sisters, up to Maupin and John Day, then to Olympic National Park, and finally back to Bend. When I hear stories like this, I wonder how they did it. We took a van from Bend to Sisters, and from Oregon to Olympic Park, then back to Bend. 😮 Everywhere in between, we hiked, camped, cave dove, swam, white water rafted, canoed, snow shoed, skied, snow boarded, (I might be forgetting something. )
It amazes me, too. This particular bunch would have been all on-foot anywhere their boats wouldn't go.
How did i seriously come across this gem? Thank you
Thank you. I hope you find more on the channel to enjoy!
I've listened to two of these. The writting is very entertaining
Thank you very much. I hope you find more to enjoy on the channel.
Thank you , for the wonderful western story , on a rainy Saturday morning , please share more of the same , ❤😊❤
Thank you for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed. There are many more on the channel. Maybe you will find something else to enjoy!
well done and enjoyed..
Thanks! I hope you find more on the channel to your taste. This is part of a series about the history of the founding of Astoria, so take a look at the playlist if you wish!
Could've done without the babbling ending
This is part of a longer story, so that part fits into the bigger picture.
14:00 I have Campbell ancestors from Kansas. I also have Ellis ancestors.
Could be your families. These are based on true stories.
@19thCenturyCampfire The only thing I really know about my Campbell ancestors is Preston Campbell, my 3rd great grandpa on my mom's side was a Confederate. I believe he was a gerneral or something. At the same time, my dad's family were harboring blacks enroute to Canada.
👍
Thanks! I hope you find more on the channel you enjoy.

What a great video! Very interesting!
Very interesting! I bet they were sick the next day!
Thank you for this wonderful story. If only things were still that simple.
Well spoken, my friend. And thank you for watching. I hope you find many more to enjoy.
Over 50 years ago I was talking to my Grandmother, I said something about back in the good old days. She reached over patted me on the knee and said These are the good old days those were hard times.
I would’ve been the Doctor. Who’ve had a two 38’s and two 45 revolvers a 45 repeater rifle a shotgun. Knifes, axes and spears. Plus a medical bag. And a wife asking why and how and why she can’t she do it. And she’ll do it better, anyway.
And a new wife every few years or so.😆
@@19thCenturyCampfire Yes, from Sweden. Ya
Can’t believe I’m first view, comment, and like. People are missing out here. It was a rough life back then but goodness I would love to have been there and lived it with them. People nowadays, including myself, are extremely soft compared to these men. Id have still killed myself trying to keep up. I used to work oilfield and I had some rough days and permanently damaged my body refusing to leave someone else having to pick up my slack but I didn’t shame myself.
Thanks. I hope you find more on the channel to enjoy.

Very pleasing. Very well read.
Thank you. I am curious...had you ever heard of Astoria before seeing this video?
@@19thCenturyCampfire No.
@@19thCenturyCampfireThere's a replica of a fur/trading fort in Portland or Vancouver, and then there's Fort Astoria (Lewis & Clark's winter quarters) there in Astoria. Maybe I'm wrong about Fort Astoria being the location of the expedition's winter quarters. Haven't been to these sites for 20 years.
@@ghostlyimageoffear6210 That's interesting. I'd love to visit. It is my understanding that Astoria was started many years after the Lewis and Clark expedition, but it could have been started in an area near where their party passed through.
@@southwife Well I hope to do more videos on the founding of the outpost.
Just found this channel last night and loving it.. Keep up the good work.
Many thanks! Keeping to once a week at the moment. I hope you continue enjoy. I've got lots more to come!
Geronimo was not a chief. He was a medicine man.
There is a story of a medicine man coming soon.

Uncles of mine drove herds of cattle from TX to SE CO to found a 2.5 mil acre free range ranch 1869-1885. My 2nd gr grandfather was a cowboy for them. Also have a distant connection to Charles Goodnight (a cousin of my ancestor was married to Goodnight's niece). Haven't proved they knew each other but is seems likely since they traveled the Goodnight Loving trail just 3 years after Goodnight.
Sweet
Very cool! Any good stories handed down?
@@19thCenturyCampfire When I tell it, I'm not sure folks will believe all my old west connections. The great grandfather that helped drive herds of cattle from TX to CO was Kit Carson's nephew who worked on his Kits ranch(s) until Kit died in 1868. He also was an acquaintance of Kits friend Tom Tobin who killed a couple of the Espinosa gang. Back to the cattle business...the 2.5 mil acre ranch was the JJ owned by the Jones brothers, Stephen Fuqua, Peyton, James, and William. They fought for the south in the Civil War and were implicated in the murder of a Union sympathizer after the war. They were acquitted (along with their bro in-law my 2nd gr gf) and immediately afterwards left TX to start the ranch in CO (1869). They were a wild bunch and were involved in at least one other murder. They sold the ranch in 1885 to Scottish investors who operated it until WWI. Stephen Fuqua Jones was the brains apparently and started another ranch in KS that is now part of the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. www.nps.gov/tapr/learn/historyculture/stephen-f-and-louisa-jones-family-history.htm. Reportedly James Michener used the jones brothers for characters in his novel Centennial. My sources are Pioneer Parade by Maurine Nelson Bradshaw (a cousin) a great book on the JJ Ranch by Frances B Keck (another cousin) and there is an online searchable version of FW Cragin's Early Far West Notebook(s) which are interviews of early CO & NM settlers in the early 1900s. One last one...one uncle Tom (Spears) Wood was married to Kit Carson's daughter Estella and was in the Las Animas bar when Clay Allison killed sheriff Charley Fabors.
@@douglasw9624 Very interesting stories! I'm checking out that Far West Notebook already.
@@19thCenturyCampfire Great....good stuff in it. My one ancestor is John Carson...he was interviewed but didn't have a lot to say. I was surprised they got him to say as much as he did...his obit said he was "reticent to speak of the old days"
Oh man this is absolutely amazing. Thank you so much. This is going to ne a nightly occasion, now.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy. I enjoy making these even just for myself. There is a lot of gems out there I hope for more people to hear.
You are the perfect narrator of the past!
I love your channel. I love 19th century writers! Today people, myself included, are too impatient and busy to savor the language of our past. Your engrossing readings of these stories, have bridged this gap. Thank-you friend❤
Thank you very much. I hope you continue to enjoy. I am keeping to a one video a week schedule at the moment. I hope for people to read more of the writings of this time period as a result of this channel.
I will be listening to these stories on Bluetooth on drives...better than radio
