Can I truly be late to the party if I planned it in the first place?
Genuinely though, thank you so much for the support on the channel so far! It truly does mean a lot as someone who genuinely adores making videos. I got tons of ideas for future projects I want to create and I'm so stoked to have you all along for the ride :)
Also a massive thank you to Alex and everyone over at DigiPen for the kind letter and the gifts! Y'all are doing amazing things, and I'm so thankful to have been able to showcase the talent of the students on campus!

    Hey man, I was the audio lead, writer and one of the game designers for EOS. Thank you so so much for featuring our game :) It really means a lot and shows us that all that effort we placed into it was worth it. Looking back, it feels a little surreal to see people still occasionally discovering our game. It's easy to get lost while making it, thinking no one will ever see it, but videos like these really show me that the time we took wasn't wasted. If you're ever curious on any details of the development process, feel free to ask me anything and I'll do my best to answer! Much love from Singapore! <3

    '20 DigiPen grad here. I went on to work on Halo Infinite and Forza Motorsport 8. Thank you so much for this video, it's a love letter to the indie games we poured our heart sweat and tears into and I really appreciate the positivity. If you or anyone is interested in making games, join a game jam. If you have fun over the long weekend, consider looking into schooling. It's a lot of hard work, but it's very rewarding. Great work on the video, absolutely subbed. :)

    Dude, student games are experiencing such a rapid growth right now. There are so many cool games programs showing up in colleges. I graduated from NYU the same year that they got the game center, their game dev program. Seeing how much cool stuff they've made has been amazing and exciting. It inspired me so much I was able to act as an industry advisor for a student game at USC this past year. The kids are all right and I can't wait to see what the games industry is like with them in it

    I went to DigiPen for high school courses and my game design partner graduated there. It's definitely an unsung hero for gamers! Lots of game devs know just how influential it is but not as many consumers. Also shout out to my friends I've made at the USC game dev program.

    And then I am just casually scrolling through TH-cam... And suddenly I see my old project being mentioned haha! Alien Removal Division was my third-year project. In our third year, we practice how it's like to work at a triple A company by simulating one. So just one year long, one game, 30 people from multiple disciplines... It was definitely a nice learning experience! (lots of planning btw haha). Nice video! ;)

    The freebie zones is a cool place to observe the impact of trends. Just felt like sharing what I remember, don't mind if I do lol --== Rogueli?es ==-- A lot of rogueli?es on Steam. Couple years ago, infinite replayability was a big thing in gaming, and rogueli?e was perhaps the signature genre of indie dev. Rogueli?es also happen to be among the hardest to balance. One of their core aspects is to "build your gear on the go", but it's often more like "find metas and repeat them every run". RNG is also a major thing. The longer the run, the more impact it has, and if not balanced properly, you either reach the final boss with too few or many buffs. A nightmare to balance for games when a single run takes over a hour. --== Metroidvania ==-- The rather recent trend was likely started by (mainly) Hollow Knight, which seems like perfect material for the indie dev community : Humble beginnings, huge success, fast-paced, puzzle-oriented combat, and most importantly, a figure of a couple friends making it to the top. Imo metroidvania has been a rather good trend. The genre gives plenty of room for creativity in both gameplay and design, which many studios exploited in a refreshing way. --== Vampire Survivors ==-- In my memory, this is the first "DIY trend" in gaming, where a game becomes trendy while even a novice could easily reproduce it and make it feel good, causing the birth of many amateur yet decent clones. The trend got so big it was called the "survivors-like" genre. There's been stuff like Flappy Bird before, but Vampire Survivors came out at the beginning of... idk, the "content-creator" era, where everybody wanted to be the one to do the next big thing. --== Esports / live service ==-- Steam got a fair amount of Esports freebies from back when Esport was cool (which is a totally objective statement). In fact, it was more like ports of mobile games from studios that fed on the meta esports/skins/mobile. Nah seriously Esports was alright in early 2020s, but like it's getting old, nothing really happening, and the esport scene (not the game dev) never reached financial stability. --== Hidden cats ==-- A smaller trend, yet a major one in Steam freebies. It blew up around july 2023 as "Cats hidden in paris" got some attention, encouraging the studio to make more. --== Banana ==-- "In 2024, the latest game trend is clicking on a banana". Obviously blew up for bringing back the concept of NFTs (a big trend couple years ago, but not on Steam due to restrictions), speculating on virtual items for profit. The thing about Banana is that it wasn't linked in any way to NFTs (which would've instantly killed it), and made it accessible to obtain items for free.

    One in a Krillion artist here! The team spent so many hours laughing over our credits sequence and saying, “well what if we just added this one thing?” Glad you liked it enough to use in the video :) I wanted to say thank you for all your kind words said about Digipen games. For me and my graduating class, it’s been a tough year - the games industry has almost no job openings right now, and it feels like nobody cares about us and our games. Because of your video, for the first time in months, I got to wake up this morning and see messages from my friends feeling proud, excited, and inspired to make games. Your video is being passed around Digipen student circles like wildfire. It genuinely means a lot to us.

    I was shocked you didn't mention this, but one of DigiPen'g ame (Narbacular Drop) came up with portals from, you know, Portal. Valve took the mechanic and brought the students in to help basically make a full AAA version of their game. And then, another one of their games (Tag: The Power of Paint) came up with the concept of gels from Portal 2 and the same thing happened again.

      It still happens. Nitronic Rush is a more recent example, which came out as Distance (albeit from a decade or so now). You can't use your old code or assets, but if you leave and go on to make "basically the same game but different enough to be legally distinct" they're not gonna go after it. The bad PR would destroy the school.

    • @mega-flare
      @mega-flare 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The agreement between DigiPen and their students in this regard is moreso about protecting students/grads from each other, legally. More of a copyright thing than an IP thing. Specifically, any assets created for their educational programs will stay under their copyright. (Though students are of course encouraged to feature this work in portfolios when job searching) I've talked with a member of their IP committee, and they said they don't really care if you use the same characters/tech/ideas in future projects, as long as the specific rendition is separate (don't use the assets you made at school) Still, the safest route as always is to make "legally distinct but largely similar game." The agreement is not intended to hoard IP, but it could be used to protect their public image should anyone try anything dumb. The distinction between Narbacular Drop and Portal is totally fine, and can very much still happen.

    • @Horgler
      @Horgler 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ac3theartist225 Nitronic Rush came before Distance. Similar games, but the latter is definitely more streamlined and polished.

    • @galaxythedragonshifter
      @galaxythedragonshifter 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Exactly my concern. Like, i get it if theyre a studio and copyright claim THEIR IPs, but if you're a school, under NO circumstance should you copyright claim your students' IPs. Thats one reason why I'm not going. This person is saying that "creativity is encouraged", while I've heard that the school actively says "you might not want to use the ideas you want to own later" from other students.
