Kentucky's peculiar setup allowed for a small school to have a reasonable chance to win, and I am fascinated with that. I read a story about Cuba and how they won the state in - I think, 1952. That is such an amazing achievement. Indiana, conversely, had very few small schools even make the finals. Milan was the last one to win it 1954.

Carr Creek did a great job to win it all. Shows how great King Kelly was when he scores 28 and a guy says “I stopped his butt”. I guess anything short of 50 points was a good day for the defense against him.

He must have been drunk during this interview! There’s a video of him playing posted on TH-cam and he never ever dribbled with his left hand. He didn’t do anything period with his left hand! He jacked up wild shot after wild shot. The whole legend about how great he was is total bullshit! When he played against the Big O, Oscar Robinson is an all star game he score 4 big points. King Kelly Colman, king of the bullshit.

Friends with the band, ran sound some and drove them to a couple of gigs, Tewligans and Jockey Club when they opened for the Dead Kennedy's. Hung out and ran sound a time or two.

The basketball excitement of the 50s and 60s, in eastern Kentucky, was amazing. I was so blessed to live there. I love the sport to this day. Most of us, now follow the Kentucky Wildcats year after year. The euphoric victories peppered with humbling losses, keep us happily anticipating, just as we did in our high school memories. Basketball is the greatest!

So sad to see that a once wonderful school and area is basically a ghost town now. My father grew up in Wayland and although I haven't been there much in my lifetime he always used to talk about the "fountain". With the decline of coal small towns such as Wayland and Martin really don't have much of anything anymore, very heartbreaking indeed. But such a beautiful history involving King Kelly and the Wayland Wasps, even if it did go down in history as a "what if" story would've loved to see him play against Jerry West in the pro's. God bless these small communities suffering from the fall of coal =[.
