Implementing theory in qualitative research
I am teaching a course in qualitative research, at the university of Helsinki. Made a video about theory implementation for my students. Prior to the lecture the students will choose one theory that they think is relevant for their upcoming masters thesis.

    Wonderful landscapes and an even more wonderful approach to teaching! Speaking from personal past experiences, as a student, this is exactly the condition for actual scientific knowledge, and understanding thereof, to emerge. Not merely a framework for mechanistic application of facts etc, which is miles away from the actual spirit of science. Well done!

    Would Bourdieu's habitus be compatible with critical realism?

    • @TiyanaJ
      @TiyanaJ หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nope - Margaret Archer was a critical realist social theorist whose Morphogentic Approach was developed as a methodology for analysing the interplay between agency, structure, and culture. She critiques the Bourdieusian approach for conflating structure and agency. In her view, Bourdieu's habitus downplays the autonomous role of human agency and emphasises how social structures shape dispositions to the extent that individual freedom and reflexivity are limited, but social action still drive change

    Yes this has helped find a much easier way to understand what I've learnt about critical realism. This helped me. To be able to define or differentiate critical realism to my level of understanding

    Great video! Had to watch it three times to understand some points 🐌 It would be interesting to hear more about how you apply the theory to your work.

    Doesn't make it sufficiently clear that 'critical theory' derives from a marxian critical tradition that makes judgements about why one path is to be preferred another, whereas the radical skepticism of 'postmodernism' as a body of theoretical inquiry denies the validity of all 'grand narratives' ultimately resulting in the erasure of attempts to enhance society.
