Hi Black Cat, great video..!! Do you have Facebook? Man, where do I start? I have acquired a 27 ft, 1987 Ford E350 RV. I want bring her into the 21st Century. Planning on going 24v. I have so many questions, but in full honesty, there is so much DIY info out there. I want 1,000 watt solar farm on my roof, (4 x 250 Watt panels) Li Time has this 3000 watt Inverter/Solar charge Controller/12/24/36/48v All in One for $500. Okay, so do I gut my fuse box and Inverter from my RV, and go with a new unit? I wish you could accept pictures here. The inverter is an old school 1980s I believe Magnatek. Series 6300 A Model 6345 UL inverter. Should I just replace it with that Li Time AIO, and run a fuse panel off of it? In my RV< I gutted the bathroom sink/vanity, because my kitchen sink is three feet away, and the less plumbing, the less leaks. I only need one sink, one toilet, one shower. It's just me, and a stray cat that rolls with me. So in the place of that bathroom sink, I'm going to build a closet/structure to house my batteries, and all the electronics. I want to run (2-4) 200Ah Lithiums in series. I won't need that much energy. Also, when the sun comes out, everything will recharge, so yeah if I have to rough it some nights, by building a campfire, and using a zero bag in my RV, no biggie. Honestly, I still have my propane tank installed, and it is hooked up to my propane furnace, and it's 2024, so I can find propane around....it's not like I have to cross Nebraska in my stagecoach, to get Propane. In closing, okay now I'm rambling. Oh, no I don't have $30,000 to plop down on a complete 5kw system. This is going to be built in series, but I have so many questions. There's info out there, my answers are out there, so I'm not too intimidated, but you have a calm voice, and have done it, so you're a great rock..!
Watt's a taffir?
The future. LOL
Reflective objects dont work well with infrared measurements
Better to buy a set of battery . If you build it you have to purchase a tools measuring tools housing and other components . But if you are an technician and you have a tools already then building a battery is much cheaper than to buy a set of it.
Nope. Building batteries is still cheaper. About $250.00 compared to the example you gave. Apexium has US stocked EVE LF280K-V3 3.2V 280Ah for $76 per cell shipped and taxed. That being said there are advantages to buying a prebuilt battery but not quality or cost value.
Good tip but it is really more like, it is still cheaper to build larger batteries. Small builds are dead. And I love making batteries. I might get some larger cells and make another one.
what? you can order 4x 280ah lifepo4 cells shipped from china for 160 bucks right now. get rid of the bms and just use an inductive active balancer board for 5$. 8kwh 24v system for 325$. 8 of them fit perfectly inside of a 20mm ammo can for 30 bucks as long as you get the older threaded style cells. fireproof enclosure and all, 360 bucks. that same battery in server rack form costs 3 times that. the only issue is bus bars if youre pulling close to 1c, and wires as you said, and the 3 months shipping (thats actually how you know youre getting them direct from the mfg)
You should post a link to those cells you bought. I bet the are cheap LiitoKala or some other B grade cell. Beware of cheap cells. I have several videos on that. Also, people, do not use an active balancer in lieu of a BMS.
Decent video but you forgot a very important step! Compression! Those look like EVE cells and they highly recommend compression to get the best performance and life out of the cells.
thanks for the upload 👍
You are welcome. Glad you liked it.
I built a 48 nominal (51.2) volt battery with Grade A EVE LF280K cells and JK BMS with Bluetooth, 2A active balancer and 200 amp for $1,339. That is a 300 Amp Hour battery. There isn't any pre-made battery with 300 AH @15,360 watt hours that can comes close to this price and performance. You would need three $1,200 rack mount batteries @ $3,600 to match this one battery.
You make a great point. Large custom builds like what you did still make sense. Btw, sounds like a nice build.
Thanks, I built four of these batteries for a total of 61.4 kilowatt hours. This is good for about 6 days of anatomy. We are 100% off-grid with an EG4 18KPV inverter/charger and 15 kilowatts of Bi-Facial Solar. We also charge the battery bank with an EG4 Chargeverter @ 5,100 watts at 100 amps.
@@stevenfrazier8939 hello, I am trying to build 2 of 48v 280AH, I wonder that type of wire did you use to put yours in parallel? I am using a JKBMS as well. with 2 growatt inverter.
@@usafshorts Thank you for the question, I used 1/0 American Wire Gauge Fine strand Black & Red Pure Copper Flexible Wire. At the start I had two batteries and connected both to a bus bar with equal length wires, that is very important. 1/0 AWG can handle 285 amps. Now that I have four batteries they are grouped in pairs with equal length wire back to the bus bar. I did put my battery cells into a DIY kit box by Apexium which came with JK-Inverter-BMS. They are pricey at $640 each so I get it if that is not on your radar at this time. The point is, I used the same size wire for the build as well. At 12,000 watts and 51.2 volts I can pull 234 amps divided by 4 batteries is only 58.5 amps from each battery.
😅This is the right time to buy a battery Before 60% tariff by trump. But battery prices in China continue to fall. Chinese government expects cell battery prices to fall 50% next year. Also doubling its battery production and recycling capacity next year. Even some factories are starting to sell server rack 48v 100ah batteries with 10 years warranty for 750 usd & 12v 600ah for 700usd. I think the price of batteries will not increase next year. But it will not decrease either.
I would love to get my hands on a 48v 100 server rack battery for $750!!
24 Volt 100ah with Low Temp Protection and 100amp BMS $325.00 Shipped Free 5 year Warranty - So I bought 4 for 10KWH Battery Bank to Drive a 3000 Watt WZRELB 24 Volt Inverter and Victron 150/35 Smart Solar Charge Controller with 1200 - 2000 watts of Solar Supporting It.
Exactly! They are so cheap now. Why even bother make it now.
I totally agree with you on just going and buying an all-in-one battery off the shelf. I've been happy and less anxious about keeping the cell voltage balanced or coming out of balance. Im done
Much simpler and even cheaper now. But it is still fun to do a DIY battery as a hobby.

Thanks for watching and for sharing your story!
I have the misconception , That i believe the 5 burner natural gas heater sopose to indicate the # 1 through 5 is the number of bricks that turn on. Instead of all 5 bricks comming on at # 2 setting and none of them come on at # 1 setting.. and anyone explain this to me? Back in the day. We had a 3 burner propane. And each number indicate each brick turning on...
On the Mr Heater the dial (1-5) is just the thermostat. Where it is on 1 or 5 it is the same amount of BTU. It will just stay on longer the higher you set the thermostat.
Remember the Battleborn 12V 100Ah were $950?
I remember when they were $1100!!
Highly suggest to go with 48V. Much better wiring systems. 48V 25Ah are $210, and 48V 50Ah are $400 (amazon). You can plug them into your solar-gen DC solar input for 500+Watts charging.
48v has a lot of advantages, done several videos on it, but a lot of people still like 12v. And for a RV it is still the best choice.
Gotta find out how the 100ah rating is done 1 hour 12 hr or 24. Cause it then might allow it to run 200amps for 30 mins based off of voltage or temp
Too expensive. I bought recently 2 24v 100ah eco worthy for $719
Don't know anything about eco worthy but two of these, with this discount would be about the same price. You doing parallel or connecting them up in series for 48v?
Most of these batterys in this rice range don't have over current protection. This is why Will Prowse built a testing setup for this.
It was surprising. Well more than that. It was starting to run 225+ amps through one battery.
I don't think you did anything wrong. Since the battery doesn't have overcurrent protection, install a circuit breaker .
Sweet and simple! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks. Have you made one or maybe going to make one?
@@OurBlackCatCottage I've made a couple and am currently working on one using a 48v battery and an all in one inverter. :-)
When a 1000 wh power station with a 1500-1800 w inverter is selling for around $400 now, like a Ecoflow Delta 2 or Jackery 1000 v2, this is just not cost effective. Just my opinion though.
Yeah when on sale but that is not often
Yeah if you can get one on sale it is worth buying. I just wanted to show that they are simple to make and you can save a bit of money.
Cool battery but it would be nice to move to 48V tech. Thanks for the vid!
I agree. I wish I had started out with 48v. Of course you could get two and put them in series if you can figure out how to keep them balanced.
The problem here with our 240v appliance a 12v inverter with a 100 ah battery would just draw too much amperage
48v setup would be a better fit for a 240v load.
You cannot run a 240v appliance with a 12v battery and inverter. It has nothing to do with the current.
@@maurice7413 Yes I agree 12v to 240v for UK appliances draws too much amperage for a single battery. Even with several in parallel, it still consumes excessive amperage. EDECOA 3500W Pure Sine Wave Power Inverter Input Voltage (DC) 12V Output Voltage (AC) 240V
You start by saying it's just two things, and then to be reasonably useful it ends up not being just those two things
And a charger. Battery, inverter, and charger.
Optional.
@@OurBlackCatCottage you are suggesting that a power station does not need a way to get energy into it?
@@funkmon, umm, isn't the charger a/c plug or solar? Seems like nitpicking.
They also have a charge controller for solar.
@@mr.c6674 yeah, one of which was considered optional, the other not included. Which is shocking unless people buy these as one time use.
Could you switch to 48V builds and not these 12V. Thanks!
As soon as I get some 48v batteries and equipment.
Yes. Please move on to 48v!
I would not accept a free battery from them. Proper battery disposal isn’t free.
Thanks for your input!
do you have video about the construction of that shelter?? that looks awesome!
I don't. It came with my property. But I do agree with you. It is a very cool shelter.
@@OurBlackCatCottage love to see more of the inside if you ever get a chance. looks like a good root cellar for food storage like we had on the farm
Great video. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it. Are you going to build an off grid system?
@OurBlackCatCottage I have a small setup on my trailer but want to expand it and go lithium. Your video explains things very well.
1:49 Class T fuse is a better choice. The ANL will not stop an arc situation if the battery shorts. Look into it. I had an ANL with my hand rolled system but switched to Class T after some research.
Disagree. Not at 12v. I have a Class T on my 24v and I love it. But no need on such a small setup with such low usage.
I guess if you’re on your own it’s ok, but having family members in a confined space during an emergency situation might warrant a bit more safety consideration.
dont waste sending back save money and ask half refund
Now that you have your system up, you're going to make the newbie mistake of plugging in lights to the inverter 😂...Don't plug in lights to the inverter, look into E26 12v light bulbs 💡, they look exactly like normal AC bulbs, if you don't want to add a switch to your light bulb, you can use the 12v load on your charge controller as a switch, but a normal AC switch will do the trick if you decide to add a normal switch.
The purpose of this video was to show how to create an entire offgrid setup, not just running 12v out of the load output of the charger controller. That would not have been an interesting or useful video.
@OurBlackCatCottage it's a basic system, understood, but everyone messes up with running lights through the inverter, the inverter is to run 110 AC, your biggest concern should be lights inside the storm shelter, what else besides a TV, that could be ran with 12v, and a radio, that could be charged with 12v, or even a phone, that could be charged also with 12v...maybe a hot plate, but that's a waste of power for a small system.
@@OurBlackCatCottage @MosaicHomestead is just trying to suggest that you use your battery the most efficient way because with the inverter running the lights you are wasting battery in losses with the inverter. Running 12V loads off the batteries is more efficient versus running the converter on the charge controller. Almost all residential electronic equipment is DC so items like TVs, printers, radios, and etc has power bricks to convert AC to DC.
Are you guys saying that the inverter will even draw power when not in use?
@kirok3184 Yes, if it's on even if nothing is drawing power, it consumes about 15% of battery power, but with my suggestion, there is only power consumption when light is on only drawing power from the battery...That's what makes running lights off the inverter a newbie mistake.
Nice video! The battery looks great
Thanks. It really performed well.
If there are not heating pads between each cell, which I havent seen anyone do yet, the inner cells will still be frozen when it allows charging and will suffer fast degredation. A teardown would have been nice. People with use cases that will regularly get below freezing should use a different chemistry or build their own battery with proper heating. Lots of videos explaining how all this works.
All good things to concern. Thanks for watching.
Biggest pack for the cheapest price, that's my moto, they all go dead
I have a couple of Li Time batteries, not the heated ones, and I LOVE them!
And the power per dollar? That's what really matters. What is the most cost effective???
What about leaking?
Harbor Freight is the only one with a real issue. They suck.
Here in Commiefornia, Homeland AA's are $3.25 for a four pack, before Gruesome Nuisance gets his tax. But it's still a deal as the Energizer lithium's are nineteen to twenty dollars is some places.
Homeline are about that but for an 8 pack here. Grew up in CA.... never looked back. LOL
"Super Heavy Duty" are regular zinc cells, not alkaline. E-Circuit is a Dollar Tree brand. $1.25. Their alkalines are now repackaged in 8 packs for $3.00. Blue batteries are zinc, red are alkaline. It's very important to NOT mix types when doing comparisons. These 100 year-old types.
I know they are different chemistry. I have done many Zinc-Carbon battery only reviews. I wanted to see how they stacked up next to the other chemistries.
Like to see you test several packs of the homeline to see if you got an anomaly or if they are just that good
I have tested them many times and they are always towards the top.
I'd like to know which battery has the lowest incidence of leakage. So many Duracell's leak and I've some off brands that leak as well Sometimes Duracell still in the box and not used or expired leak but still have a full charge.
Energizer was by far the best. Harbor Freight was terrible!!
The lithium started at a higher voltage! Why wouldn't they get a longer life? Plus you keep pushing the price as a negative! It can be recharged!!!! All ithers once depleted are thrown away!
They do last longer but Energizer lithium batteries are not designed to be recharged. Please do NOT try to recharge them.
i used to buy the big-name brand batteries but they are all closing factories in USA and making them anywhere else they all leak all over electronics when they die pure garbage. I put the energizer lithium ones in stuff i don't want destroyed by leaking batteries since they are only ones that don't leak over time.
They are the best at leak resistance but really Harbor Freight is only one with a real issue.
Values differ relative to intended use. For a simple flashlight, okay, the second place batteries are better than fine; however, on a difficult to reach outside fixture in a deeply cold environment, the lithium cells cannot be beat even though they cost a whole lot more. This I know from hard experience. Climbing a ladder with more than several feet of snow on the ground, and a bit of wind to make it even more fun, there is nothing like having a battery that really lasts, and can endure the cold.
I wanted to see how they stacked up regardless of chemistry. Also, Lithium does not like cold or heat.
I have found the lithium based cells (Energizer) AA's work a lot better in the cold - they simply last longer on my outdoor temperature probes (which connect via radio to the reader). I have not tried other brands, except for the normal type cells sold locally which are typically not lithium based. Of course, these are not the lithium cells for tools like Milwaukee and so on, which are completely different. @@OurBlackCatCottage
Mr. Heater propane heaters suk. I have tow of them. One is freestanding and the other is the cabinet style. Neither is 3 years old and neither will work. I Just spend 4 hours on a Saturday messing with them and they won't lit or stay lit. .
Surprising. I have several of them and have never had an issue.
The ones that don't leak and wreck your device are the best value, namely the lithium batteries...
The only ones that I have seen that leak are the cheap Harbor Freight batteries. The rest all had decent build quality.
Lithium batteries corrode just like any other battery., Worse, lithium batteries can catch fire. I avoid them like the plague!
