Bias in Nursing School Curriculum | Everybody’s Work | Extended Footage

Equipping nurses to do their best starts long before they reach the bedside. It’s time to take a closer look at academia and examine where harm is being done, intentionally or unintentionally, and do the work to ensure that people receive the quality, equitable, and compassionate care they need.
In this extended footage from “Everybody’s Work,” Dr. Kenya Beard and Dr. Monica McLemore discuss where bias in nursing curriculum shows up and how it leads to bias in practice - which often goes unchallenged. From the bedside to textbooks to illustrations, the scripts that result from bias and racism are baked into nursing curriculum, and they hurt patients by reinforcing harmful stereotypes about people of color. Creating better outcomes through education requires nurses and nursing schools to evaluate where the curriculum can cause harm.

Thank God for you Lucinda and for your work. I have been a midwife in Africa, Zambia for 14 years and an L@D nurse in America for another 14 years. I have now gone back to school to study PMHNP. I want to be able to help with especially women mental issues. Thank you for sharing about your grandmother. I cannot imagine the shock and depression that slave women went through, and this happens to rape victims and women in unhappy marriages. How can we help as health professionals even with undesirable pregnancy outcomes?

It is what it is different races are suseptible to different things at a higher rate jews and ovarian cancer for example or white men and suicide rates. So if I know I may be more suseptible to something because of my race I will do better to make wiser choices. Your just looking to be a victim with this.

BIPOC communities did not create racism. Don’t give us additional work to do; we’re already underpaid and exploited. This channel is a performative joke. There is no mention of accountability or the act; there are already laws against discrimination that are never enforced. The same European Americans who created those laws are descendants of the European colonizers who created racism. They benefit from the racism and oppression of marginalized communities.

Being a male ( the vast minority in nursing) isn’t exactly easy in nursing, and only one male was represented in this commercial. I guess white males don’t feel any of this prejudice in nursing….

They are more often than not mistaken for being the doctor. It's not to say that it doesn't happen. Being a person of color and being discriminated against and the blatant racism happens to us far more than it does a WHITE male nurse. This film is to shed light on what we have experience for decade after decade!

yes those structures are hugely problematic, especially the structures/culture in/of contemporary nursing based on Victorian values of empire - though many white nurses at all levels in the hierarchy likely feel scared, angry, threatened or worse when that gets mentioned IMO as an old white dude in nursing
