Laparoscopic (keyhole surgery) division of the lower oesophageal sphincter (Heller myotomy) has been the first line treatment for Achalasia. Myotomy is a surgical procedure in which the lower oesophageal sphincter muscle is cut to allow the oesophagus to open. Heller myotomy is the most common technique used. This is usually followed by fundoplication, where part of the stomach is wrapped aroun...

The tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach is the esophagus or food pipe. Achalasia makes it harder for the esophagus to move food into the stomach.Achalasia is rare. It may occur at any age, but is most common in people ages 25 to 60. In some people, the problem may be inherited. Help to raise awareness about this disorder. Achalasia Awareness Month | September | Invisible Illness by Annie Rose Williams
I get it!! I am stage 3 jackhammer esophagus and was sent to Miami today for a POEM consult. Apparently they made my appt with a liver specialist, not esophagus!!! The specialist I was supposed to see has a 12 month waiting list for my 1st appt! 😢 I vomit daily! It’s a terrible disease!
by far the most common cause of illness overall is nerve interference.
I have this (hopefully temporarily..) at the moment after 72 hours of vomiting (threw up absolutely nothing 70 times). I haven’t been able to eat in a week and I can barely swallow my own spit and saliva and have never wanted to give up on life so badly because hearing these videos makes me think it’s going to be an all day every day for the rest of my life thing and I CANNOT LIVE LIKE THIS.
Please look into the POEM operation .
These are so bloody painful Suffered with esophageal nut cracker spasms for many years now From the neck to the navel all organs spasm Horrendous My triggers are textures of food , spices, and lifting heavy objects Up to now I have a eating disorder angina , fnd And so many more Illnesses, Your so young to have this Sending love Awful illness Catch it early is best I find take action fast Dizapan I take but take over 1 hour to take some effect they help but don't resolve it Heard they can snip the esophagus, op to help But have breathing issues so not keen on the op Exhausting after episodes I get a hot bath it works much of the time I found out myself but have to stay in it over 1 hour plus some times in and out every 10 minutes after a hour Can you do a list of what you find helps you Please
I’m sorry you have this problem, especially being so young. I’m in my 70’s and have had this for a few years, but I didn’t know what it was. I’m just getting help for it now and your video was very informative and helpful. 🙏🏻
I forgot to mention that the doctor prescribed nitroglycerin spray to relieve the spasms. The esophagus and sphincter are the same smooth muscle type as the heart. When they had pills they were far more effective but the spray works just not as quickly. Usually requires two applications. I don't go anywhere without it.
Please look into the POEM operation , look it up on the net .
I immediately rub castor oil on my abdomen and neck and try calming breaths. It does help shorten the episode.
I was just diagnosed with jackhammer esophagus and my pressures reached 45,000 on the manometry. 😢 I’m 47 and things are def getting worse for me… the drugs are too strong and made my tongue swell so I’m just sticking with the peppermint oil. I’m hoping I can get the POEM surgery. These contractions are just so unreal…. I have lost 8 pounds in 2 weeks bc I can only tolerate liquids for now. 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
I think I have this and for about 7 years. It has been utterly random in causes. It has slowly become more of an issue. Could be once every 6 months, in more recent years it is far more frequent. While it is nowhere nearly as bad as others it is deffo becoming more life changing and need to pursue treatments
When I get these you are freaked out and in your own world!! If I cup my head with both hands and cover my ears it sounds like a laundry washer in the spin cycle!!!!
Does anyone have severe beltching like all night an can not stop
use crackers. After vomiting . Vomiting blood. I use Sunkist soda to push down the bolus. To get food down. Into my stomach.
I’ve had my first HM 2 days ago and my spasms have been insane! My spasms always get bad after a procedure (had 3 previous dilations) so I’m hoping they might calm down in a few days/weeks. My spasms always start in my chest but go right into my ears which is the worst part, can last for 10 minutes or 2 hours and as you know are unbearable! One thing I find helpful is heat, as soon as I feel it in my chest I use a heat patch or heat rub and it definitely helps. Thanks for the video it was really helpful
Currently in the hospital with the suspicion I have jackhammer esophagus. My entire esophagus and throat closed up after 2 weeks of throbbing pains behind my adams Apple hoping there’s a fix of some sort
I try succesfully swallowing air into my esophagus and the pain relieves at the moment. Another trick is drinking cold or icy water. Good luck collegues of misfortune.
Stress is probably my main trigger. I get all those symptoms You describe… sometimes the pain is 10/10, but can go months without one, or get 3 in a week. I can relate having a Ready pack… bucket, water, tissues, etc…I often try and put on relaxing or meditative Music if I’m Having a Spasm At night. My achalasia playlist… Thank you for sharing. Hang in there…
Jesus! Just drink some water when spasms starts, and it will stop right away. I have had this for over 30 years.
This was an awesome video. Very thorough and informative. Yo have a great on-camera personality. Thank you for putting this out!
Have you ever tried DGL licorice tablets? They help me in some cases especially at night
Are you ok? Unfortunately my mom is now dead😢
Unfortunately i lost my mom to this 2 weeks ago 😢. Mum i really miss you
When I eat (only when I eat and some time after) it feels like my upper stomach "gulps" or a jolt of adrenaline , is this esophagal spasm? Or a type. I thought it was a etopic heartbeat but it's in stomach area and only when I eat
I am sucking esophagus spams in srilnaka
I just found this and I have the jackhammer esophagus. It’s no fun….. Black pepper makes mine worse. Warm tea … especially Chamomile… helps a lot. It helps relax the spasm.
I was just diagnosed with jackhammer too… my pressure was 45,000 on the manometry test. Have you had the poem procedure yet?
I have this absurdity living in my chest too, it makes every minute of its waking so miserable. i had to take time off college because of it, I hate that it took my education away, my life essentially. How do you maintain the will to exist?
you are amazing im in love with you
I have had obstructive achalasia for 30 plus years and nutcracker esophagus. Heller's myotomy helped with the obstruction so that it is only a problem occasionally but the nutcracker spasms are far worse than full on labor pains and frequent if not managed. I have been able to get instant relief with chiropractic adjustments of the T5 and T6 vertebra. Found this out purely by accident when having a spasm during adjustment. Regular chiropractic adjustment has proved to be effective for 25 years. When pain is less intense I can get quite a bit of relief with massage of this area. Hope this helps some others.
Interesting I've has suspicions mine has to be spine related or pinched nerve. If I lie down with a towel rolled under my back I don't seem to have them. Ever since I fell off a ladder it seems around that time it started.
Do you get heart palpitations with it also?getting ready to do botox to see if that helps me
I 💕 your videos. I suffer from Achalasia too. I've had a Heller myometry too
I was diagnoised with Achalasia in 2021 My symptoma have been horrible .... Even after my Heller Myometry dor fundalation... I atill vomit very heavly an the wretching part is the WORST. For me .. My test i have HAD WERE ... BARIUM SWALLOW manometry Endiscopy Swallowing study with there food an meds in it Weather changes Severe spasms Bloating like im pregnant Pain in my back My journey is simuliar to yours with my Achalasia too....
Are you now okay 😢
Hi Dorothy, I am from Bangalore, India. I too am facing Achalasia disorder since past 15 years, which has aggravated in last 3 years. However I got it diagnosed only 4 years back. All these years I had been doing some experiments on myself for suitable foods. I observed sweet, soupy, dilute, noodle type food being easier to swallow. It can be in any or all the above combinations. Try this. You can slowly start these mainly at the start and end of a meal for LES relaxation and try some other food in between which more for taste.
Thank You for sharing your experience. I am just posting other achalasia warrior videos in YT. I hope you are fine and safe :-) -Greetings from Tamil Nadu
