I first heard this song at a two day concert on June 9th and 10th of 1973 at RFK Stadium in DC.possibly my favorite Dead song.
I was there. It was a make up for the original show when Jerry was "sick" Fantastic show
Si mon limon … best
in '85 my best friend gave me a cassette of this show, when I was just hopping on at 17... nothing will compare, ever
a tiny radio station in cambridge massachussetts used to play a version of this song every weekday around 1 pm i never found out what the history of that was but it was enough to convince me of the realness of THE DEAD. this was around 1985. i dont remember the name of the station and i dont know if they still exist.
They were the best in the early 70s with one drummer and rivaled any jazz combo at the time. Very unique time period for them
i used to go to Stanford U, i snuck in the showers and got hot shower everyday at Maples pavilion. Good tip if u there, just carry a gym bag and look determined .
Great track.
I jizzed on my Levi’s
do the tighten up
Great version. They are so in the pocket and
Twas' better in person. Clouds of pot and the hypnotizing music was, for lack of a better word..PEACE> Lve Dead
One of my first 30-50 tapes. I learned the show not by date but by venue, show full of 1sts, and I believe Wavy Gravy spoke on it about a children's hospital hit in ending days of Vietnam War. So much better sounding than the old 4th or 5th generation SBD. Got it on CD late 90s or early 2000's and was much clearer.
The first copy I had of this in say 82/83 was crystal clear. Must have dosed to it a 100 times over the year.
First Time Played
RIP. Phil .. thank you. 🕊
I was there. 22 yrs. old. Wall of Sound was new. Sounded great in the Stanford Stadium. Lived in the Santa Cruz redwoods in La Honda. Great scene. The guy who drove us to the concert was on acid. I thought he would lose it on the nasty curves on CA Rt 84. Didn't have to bring any dope. The stadium was so smoky and wonderful that you just had to breath it in. Saw them many times after this at the US Festival and Sacramento Cal Expo. Never disappointing even at 75. :)
DozseaDippin
Santa Cruz❤. My brother lived there and Capitola late 70s/80s/90s. I used to visit as much as I could. Eyes is one of my favs and this one the sound is so nice. Thank you Michael Rothenberg!
The first... definitely not the best. Took awhile for this song to fully bloom imo. They start to get the hang of it around the 4-2-73 show in Boston, by fall it had reached its full glory.
Love this! Jerry grinning ear-to-ear throughout. Great energy!
😂
I was there. Bobby seemed uneasy at the beginning of the song, checking the crowds reaction. I assumed ihe was looking at the crowd to see how they would react to “jazz chords”.
Another great 3 day run. Oh, how I miss these days.
❤ My first show.
The deads music held me together when i came home from nam. Thanks poochie!
That was weird,i pressed like and the tally went down instead of up!. Love this jam.
Awesome! I was there! Senior Year of HS started a couple weeks later.
Legendary show. Fantastic version of a Dylan classic.
Awesome
Phil sounds so good. They all sound so good. Is Jerry playing the Travis Bean? His tone sounds late 60's raw at times. Wow😇🍄🍄
1973 ! / 02-09-73 Roscoe Maples Pavilion, Stanford U, Palo Alto, Ca.⚡️ First~ “China Doll” “Eyes” “H.C.Sunshine” “Loose Lucy” “TLEO” “Row Jimmy” “Wave That Flag” 💫 1970~74... Golden era ! Awesome Set Lists✨ Grateful Dead & Jerry Garcia Band Forever 🌙 From 🇯🇵
China Doll opener? That's a very unusual way to start a concert; I wonder if there was a death in the family or something.
I was there, too. Hitchhiked up from Selingsgrove, where I was in school. Can’t say I remember much. We had a blanket on the gym floor. Substances may have been involved. A few months later, saw them again at the Spectrum in Philly. Hard to believe that was 53 years ago.
Jack!!!
Ten years ago, I walked this street my dreams were riding tall Tonight I would be thankful Lord, for any dream at all. Some folks would be happy just to have one dream come true But everything you gather is just more that you can lose.(~);}
tnxalot hot stuff
(I think )this was my first show. Took the bus .
nice tnxalot
Absolutely smoking version. One gift of better sound quality, or just older ears, is hearing Bob’s rhythm guitar. He paints on this one. As usual. Thanks so much for sharing. 🙏
😅🎉
Phil sounds great on this too (as usual) -- RIP
To my ears, 72-73 were the peak years for Bobby's guitar playing.
I still have my cassette of 2/9/73.. one of many that received heavy rotation back in the day.. fantastic stuff
started seeing them in early 80s, all my crew cut our teeth to this back in the day, This and 1/22/78, 5/8-9/77, 12/30/78, shrine 67, among others.
Had this on cassette 40 years ago. Thank you!
Fell in love with this song from the opening chords on Wake album. I was 14.
JORMA😊
I was a virtual baby, 7 years old.... 50 years ago...
A night at the Rubber Dog
Valhalla
Wrong venue. 2 9 73 is roscoe maples pavilion
Excuse me? Roscoe Maples Pavilion IS AT STANFORD.
Dang! Boldly going where no band has gone before....or since.
Jerry was in peak form on this one
6:39
Love it😍
Early 80's tempo was always a lil "sped" up.😂
❤❤
Best song debut ever. Totally jazzed out. The beginning of a two year jazz era.
Jesus Christ that rhythm section
This just topped Englishtown in my Eyes😂
