Mt. Hallasan on Jeju Island
Climbing Mt. Halasan, the highest point of South Korea, is more of a hiking pilgrimage than a climb. The hike is regulated (get your permits in advance online) and the route is manicured - with off-route paths not an option. You'll find your own rhythm as you navigate to the summit, alternating between long stretches of isolation and short stretches of either passing or getting passed by fellow pilgrims. At the summit you will share the views and accomplishment with hundreds of others. Many groups are picnicking at the summit with hot ramen soups, having carried thermoses of hot water with them. The smell of hot soup filled our nostrils with envy as we snacked on energy bars and dried peaches.
We ascended the Gwaneumsa Trail, starting at 6:30 to summit at 11. The fall colors for the first few hours were unbelievable. You never really get any views beyond the immediate forest for the first 3+ hours until
you reach Samgakbong Shelter. Beyond the Station the views open up, from the upper mountain to the sea. We descended the Seongpanak Trail. We all agreed we would have rather used our ascent route to descend as well. The Seongpanak Trail, although nearly the same elevation change, had many sections of steep slippery rocks that made for slow going. We reached the trailhead about 2:30.

What a slog - started at 4am after crashing for a few hours of sleep at the South Fork campground/ navigated the Pigeon Creek drainage by headlamp relying on a few tracks from Peakbagger. Once I crested above the grassy slopes onto the ridge there were remnants of a trail - which I lost. Was happy to put the headlamp away as I descended to Bennett Creek, which has water. Along the way to Bennet...

What a celebration for Keith Christensen's SPS List Completion. Jasper and I parked at the Trailhead at the end of Forest Road 21S36. We waited for the others but started out on the hike when the meeting time had passed. Thought they had possibly started from a different trailhead. Turns out they had just parked about 0.5 miles from the same trailhead due to the condition of the road (OK for hi...
Dunderberg Peak

Hike to the summit o Dunderberg Peak from Dunderberg Meadow Road. Follow the Kavanaugh Ridge Road about 0.8 miles, and then make it over easy, open cross country to the ridge. From there, its a matter of contending with scree and wind s you make it over a hump, downclimb to the main saddle, and then up and over Dunderberg East Summit. The views from the summit of Dunderberg are great, from Matt...

A perfect way to beat the heat in Owens Valley. Head up to the summit of Mt. Irvine from the Meysan Lakes Trailhead next to Whitney Portal campground. Get an early start and the miles and switchbacks melt under your feet. Once you reach the sublime high meadow at Camp Lake, it's time to go cross country up to the Whitney Zone Overlook. Then it's a long way up the ridge to the summit, with fun b...

Kern Peak from Blackrock Trailhead

Kern Peak stands alone, miles from any trailhead in the Southern Sierra. A day hike of Kern Peak doesn't prove that you're a great climber; but it does prove that you're willing to subject your body to a long day of trail grinding. 4:30am start, summited about 12:30 and back to the car at 6:00. 13.5 hours and 27.3 miles. We were lucky with intermittent cloud cover and reasonable temps. All the ...
Mt Baxter via Baxter Pass
มุมมอง 1585 หลายเดือนก่อน
The road to the trailhead is well-maintained relative to other dirt roads on the east side - that said the maintenance stopped at the trailhead, as Baxter Pass Trail proved to be a tough affair -with a spicy mix of stream crossings, bushwhacking and trail wash-outs. Combined with the high temps we were worked by the time we got to camp. Isaac and I hiked up to the cirque between Diamond and Bla...

Get to the high point of the Inyo Mountains!! A steep climb up from Whippoorwill Flat, gaining 4,000 ft. in 3.5 miles. We camped at the Flat and started the hike at 5 am, gently ascending through pines ad cactuses until the foot of Waucoba. At that point the hike goes steep!!!! But the views of the desert, extending out into Death Valley are amazing! The grand prize is not the flat, summit plat...
Mt Abbot

Great early season backpack and climb of Mt. Abbot via the North Couloir - had some route finding challenges between the couloir and the ridge due to steep sections of snow - brought a 30m, 6mm rope "just in case" and we used it for belaying across some sketchy sections and rappelling down them - it was a SLOW climb with all of that, and having to change in and out of crampons at least 8x / it ...

Might feel like a slog under a full sun on a hot day, but with the drama of the clouds today it was a fantastic hike. Ascending through the clouds, only to emerge above the Sea of Clouds was sublime.

Great hike, going to check this out for sure 👍🏻 thanks for sharing fun watching your kids hike the peak, great job 🙌
Cool!
Wow, did this all burn in the last 2 years? I remember it quite verdant in Nov 2022
It burned this summer! Pretty much the whole thing
@ that’s a pity. It was a pretty area.
looks like a beautiful trip!
I do most of my hiking within a few miles of Smith Mountain. I've went up Smith and Jackass, but still haven't went up to the top of nearby Granite Knob, but I've been to the top of Blackrock (slightly higher than Smith) a few times. Today I did a hike in the Osa Meadow area.... a few days ago I went down to Jordan HS.
I have not visited Jordan HS, but it's on my list!!
Were bear encounters an issue?
@@zachvandeusen8113 we didn't see any .... but they live there
Thanks for the insight. Headed up there with the family end of this month.
Nice work, and the timing was fast. You have had a great season so far!
Thanks- got to squeeze the day hike in on a family vacation! Had to start early enough to be back in Mammoth for family responsibilties!
Still snow at the pass in August! Great views, made me want to go back!
Is the taboose pass trailhead passable with a non 4 wheel non high clearance truck? Thanks
@@chili1593 honestly I would have said not advisable while driving the road, but when I got to the trailhead I was surprised that there were vehicles parked like you described
Great video! I guess you'll have to dayhike Taboose Pass to get Striped ;)
Or I'll get it on the way out next season after trying for arrow, pyramid and Marion ???
@@jasonpair69 C'mon ! Must dayhike Taboose!
@@romainwacziarg you're the madman
I did this few days ago. Went to the true summit from below. Looked up. And I was like nah, not today, that wall of rock is like 20ft up.
@@nightowl7261 still a fantastic hike till that point!
I did Baxter Pass in 2018 and it was miserable. The water crossings and brushy closing in of trail look SOOOO much worse now in 2024 your vid. So you rock. So does the vid and the music!
@@UltraKlutzJeff thanks - I think I'll go up there again very early season to make it a little easier when I try to get Diamond and Black Mtn
Great video and hike! Thank you for sharing. :)
What a great hike! Amazing views! :)
Yes, River Spring is neat! I just got back from a hike in the area an hour ago. Instead of turning towards Beer Keg, I went a ways up Long Canyon. How clear was the trail up from Red Rock? I did Kern a few years ago, coming in over Trail Pass, spending two nights in Ramshaw.
The trail up from redrock was pretty clear till the plateau - then easy cross country as the peak comes into view - neat area!
Nice tour !! How many miles you guys did ? Did you guys started at Kennedy meadows ? We’ll be trying same route on two weeks
Thanks - if you're asking about Crag Peak I think it was about 15 miles round trip from Kennedy meadows campground
... where's the hole that leads to the Underground? Where's goatmom?
When I did Waucoba (2015) I followed a road from the southwest most of the way to the peak. I drove in past Mazourka Peak, over a pass, and then parked at the wilderness boundary (9145 feet). Only the last half mile or so was off the old road.
Rad!
Amazing trip Jason. Congrats!
Great tour - wonderful video - congrats !! Was looking at the climb from the 'glacier' to the ridge - and thinking you got on some nasty variant - then read the comment :) Congrats on the physical end mental fortitude - not easy conditions you got there - nice achievement !
Thanks Catalin- we were very happy to get back to the glacier!!!
Great video! Loved the POVs...makes you feel like you're there! Can't wait to see what's next.
Thanks !!

Nice video. Thanks for sharing. 👍3
Great Vid ! So you keep your big pack at same base camp whole time ?
That's correct - we set up camp at Thunderbolt Col and went back after North Pal- original plan was to bivy between North Pal and the U-Notch but the weather was suspect - I'll be honest, the hike back to the camp down the U Notch Analog and then back the next morning back up was tough - I would bivy if you could manage it
If this is perfect condition, you must have no bad days ever :D So frigid that you may have misidentified the mountain!
T-bolt is a tough one!!
🤗
Thanks Brian - it was a good one (or four!!)
EPIC loop! Awesome 4-peak blitz!!
I saw your signature in the register today!
Very cool - if I recall the register was wet so glad you could read it
alternate beta on Thunderbolt summit block was bad ass. Making big throws up high
Noice!
Beautiful, thank you. BTW, why does orange jacket guy always look so worried?
Ha ha Not sure - there was no worry, just focus!

Any signs of nature at or around Stanislaus peak?
If you count a few deer and the bow hunters I saw hunting them - nothing else though
okay, thank you for the info. appreciate it@@jasonpair69
Can you post the trail numbers you were on? We are planning to do the same exact trip.
So sorry I don't know the trail or off-road numbers as we were guided - I only know we started at Red Canyon Slot on HWY 89
Thank you! @@jasonpair69
I was there in 2019, beautiful place. I hiked up to the 17 hole via trail. But went down via the golf course at sunrise. I did not know you can continue the trail across from the 17 hole. We will be there for 7 nights next month. I will follow your directions. Thanks!
Oh yeah have fun - what an amazing place to watch sunrise
And let me know how you like the trail!
Breathtaking views my friend, absolutely and honestly breathtaking! What a great upload!

Question: was that chimney the “creative rappel?” Our bid is in two weeks and one of our team only wants N. Pal so thinking of reversing the direction to Tbolt. TIA
I think the creative rappel was coming down from Polemonium, but I could be mistaken - good luck and have fun
Wow - second day was glorious ! but the Goode climb - man - I would not have taken a toe out of that tent (the panorama @2:33 says everything :) - nice tour all put together !
