What a horrible take on performance.

This was such a frustrating conversation to listen to, but it's one a lot of people have had. I feel like people are uncomfortable with Baby Reindeer, because there's something taboo about men being portrayed as the victim. Michaela Coel did the same exact thing with I May Destroy You. Nobody got into moral hand-wringing about her sharing her story in the exact same way Richard Gadd has. What makes you feel icky about somebody taking the worst thing that has ever happened to them and turning it into something positive? Do you have any idea how many people watched this show and felt seen and understood for the first time? The scale doesn't matter. It's like saying Taylor Swift shouldn't be allowed to write about her shitty boyfriends because so many people listen. And on the breakdown monologue: Saying you don't buy it because it's like a moment in a TV show. It IS a moment in a TV show. He didn't literally have a breakdown on stage. He wrote a comedy show called Monkey See Monkey Do and did it at the Fringe and won the Edinburgh Comedy Award. It's the thing that started his career. The monologue was an amalgam of that show and parts of Baby Reindeer, the one-man show. It's like you just want to have an ick.

Love the movie. As a child of the 80s.. this hits home.

I heard somewhere that Mila came up with the language with the director over a few sessions :) It's really quite amazing! Glad you guys actually noted that. I always felt like it was amazing. Her inspiration was apparently making a fantasy language with some of the languages she knew as a basis for some parts (some grammar etc) :)

This resonates so much with me- I saw Into the Woods at Paramount as well, and it was my first time with the show at all- and while it was literally a mesh of stories, each story/character felt very isolated from the overall story. It’s honestly, not my favorite, but the girls are absolutely obsessed. They get so drawn into each character, and in that way it’s such a fun show.

Took the girls to see Wicked last fall, with Stages, and when I asked them how they liked it, they said, “That was not Idina and Kristen!” 😂 (they first, and then only watched, a bootleg video on TH-cam of an original cast performance). Those mind blowing performances can be such a gift and a curse!

Its not because you are queer. Its very common for audiences to relate to villians because of what power villians present to the audeince. Power, money, women, fame, a lack of moral guidelines. We all wish we could be the villian but majority of us have too much moral stance to ever stoop to what a villian does.
